There's a rumor that the character was originally supposed to be Alexander Luthor (thus all the references to "my father" in the first half of the movie) but they reversed it and just made him "Lex" in the end. If he was actually a different character, I think his personification could've worked. The script is still dumb, but I'm not going to put that on Eisenberg.

This is the first review I've seen that pointed out how Batman is supposed to be smart, not an emotional, reckless idiot. Thank you.
@zhengyingli8 жыл бұрын
Tranorix Except that Batman has become emotionally unstable on numerous occasions in the past including after Jason Todd's death in A Death in the Family. If past versions of Batman can have metal breakdowns, why not in BvS?
@Tranorix8 жыл бұрын
At almost no point in the story do Batman's decisions make sense. He's broken down from the start, and continually made to look stupid, which is just a bafflingly misguided way to introduce a character who's always supposed to be a step ahead. It's not that Batman can't ever be emotional; it's that so far we've ONLY seen this Batman be emotional, making ridiculous decisions based on dreams and laughably bad evidence. Certain core attributes about these characters shouldn't change. Batman is the World's Greatest Detective; he should act like it.
@zhengyingli8 жыл бұрын
Tranorix Isn't that the point of the entire movie? Bruce was repeatedly being called out by Alfred for being irrational throughout most of the movie. Batman's not supposed be irrational, and yet it has happened many times in the past where he screws up majority like the example I brought up. Batman's not 100% immune to the very same trappings that makes him and us human, no matter how mentally well-trained he is.
@Tranorix8 жыл бұрын
I understand how that kind of movie might be compelling; I just don't think it was well-executed in BvS. Batman doesn't do anything impressive in this movie except a rescue that would've made much more sense for Superman to handle. There's no reason to like him. A past tragedy that is only alluded to -- the death of a character we've never met in this universe -- just isn't enough to create that emotional connection. Batman needs to establish himself as a hero first before we start deconstructing hero tropes with his character. This shit ain't Watchmen.
@Tranorix8 жыл бұрын
But yes, I will say that Alfred was one of the only things about this movie I enjoyed.

@UbinTimor8 жыл бұрын
to be fair they based this Lex on the one in the early Superman Comics, there's a whole documentary on the evolution of Lex Luther in the comic book universe. in this situation though I would much rather prefer the Lex from the Superman cartoon show even the Young Justice Lex would do.
@IndecisiveJR8 жыл бұрын
UbinTimor dude regardless of comic book accuracy or not, a character shouldn't be written and performed in such an annoying way that the audience can't enjoy him.
@UbinTimor8 жыл бұрын
regardless, that's subjective. you (I'm assuming) and I grew up with a calm and collected Lex, like the one in the Superman cartoon, and other variation such as the later comic book versions and the ones in the previous superman movies and smallvill, but like I said there are different version of every character, just like there are different version of the Joker. This Lex- although vastly inferior to ones I know- is from the original source material, this was how the first Lex Luther acted so you can't blame them for wanting to start from the beginning to pay homage to the comic books. Did it work? obviously not, I myself can't stand this Lex. but this character survived through tons of comics so obviously people back then liked him, at least they made the effort to keep at least something close to comics in the movie but of course it didn't work out. and just like how the Lex in the comic book changed I'm sure this one will too.

Superman "sensed" that Lois Lane was in trouble cuz of some supersonic hearing or whatever and he recognizes her specific voice. He's done that in the comics and the animated series and stuff. That's an established ability of Superman. The reason he couldn't use that same ability to locate his mother is because the script didn't want Superman to end the movie before it could get to the fight that people paid to see
@zhengyingli4 жыл бұрын
Superman couldn't hear Martha because she didn't scream like Lois did or there wasn't gunfire happening around her like in Nairomi.

@@zhengyingli Superman could hear Lois in Africa but couldn't locate his mother in the same city with his super hearing and xray vision. Makes sense.
@zhengyingli4 жыл бұрын
@@enumaelish9193 The fact that Superman has those powers doesn't enable him to filter out 7.3 billion people to find someone who's not making any noise. The only reason Superman found Lois in Africa is because Lois told Superman her location beforehand. It's really not that complicated.
@daedalus_20v4 жыл бұрын
"He's done that in the comics and animated series and stuff" is exactly the problem. It's not an established ability _in the movies_ (well now it is, sort of?). It sounds nitpicky, but it matters. I'm sure when it happened for the first time in the comics, it was explained in a thought bubble or dialogue or whatever else. But you can't just lift stuff from the comics you think is cool and drop it into a film with no precedent, especially when it's an extremely convenient solution to a high-stakes dilemma (Lois' imminent death). It's bad writing, and frankly, it's lazy. If you want to suddenly add a new ability after 7(?) Superman films, introduce it early on in a less serious situation to demonstrate that "hey, this thing exists." This concept of his "super hearing" or whatever could be demonstrated onscreen in like 20 seconds. She screams, he hears her from across town, he flies over, only to realize she was just startled by a spider or something. This happens in films all the time, for this purpose. Lucius Fox and Bruce Wayne briefly discuss the malfunctioning autopilot feature of "the bat" in The Dark Knight Rises. It's a throwaway bit of dialogue, it seems, and nobody pays it much attention, but the seed is planted so that when it becomes specifically relevant at the end of the film, the scene in the restaurant that follows makes perfect sense without a single word being spoken. If you can't shoehorn 20 seconds into your 152-minute film in order to demonstrate something that ends up being rather important, well... it's either lazy, or stupid, or both. In BVS, super hearing comes off as contrived, especially because, as you mention, he seemingly "can't" use the very same ability to resolve _another_ high-stakes dilemma involving a woman he loves. And we don't know or understand why... unless we read it once in a comic book.
@zhengyingli4 жыл бұрын
@@daedalus_20v "It's not an established ability in the movies (well now it is, sort of?)." It was established in Man of Steel twice. "She screams, he hears her from across town, he flies over, only to realize she was just startled by a spider or something." A spider wouldn't have make Lois scream like she did when Lex pushed off of a skycraper. "In BVS, super hearing comes off as contrived, especially because, as you mention, he seemingly "can't" use the very same ability to resolve another high-stakes dilemma involving a woman he loves." Was Martha screaming at the top of her lungs at any point of her capture? Were there gun shots? No. I don't see how it's difficult to understand.

A traditional Lex Luthor wouldn't work because in the DCEU a traditional Lex would be money hungry and would be a discount Steve Jobs a proper DCEU Lex Luthor would work if he was trying to defame Superman by making him look bad and prove he is superior I hope this clears things up

If I've... well... "understood" the Lois Lane subplot correctly, Lex Luthor sold arms to terrorists just to send Lois Lane on a needlessly-complicated wild goose chase, calculating she'll eventually work out that he's responsible, _just so_ she'll confront him so he can push her off a building, _just so_ Superman will be lured to the area to save her, _just so_ Lex can engineer a fight between Batman and Superman. ... Did I miss something or is that how it looked in the script?
@jonathanstarsmoure57917 жыл бұрын
No, the subplot was the whole plot, gone wrong. Lex wanted to frame Superman, jumping on the opportunity that Lois was going to africa, but then it back fired, Lois was too persistent and uncovered his plans. Also Superman never bought into getting rid of Batman, and Batman wasn't as quick to act(at first). So he had to change plans, get rid of loose ends(Court scene) because of the leaning danger that is Lois Lane, and make it seem like Superman is behind it, or at least to Batman's eyes, more collateral.

@DHCVoLt7 жыл бұрын
if you didn't understand his motive then you werent paying attention I guess. Lex made nods to God many times throughout the movie, also referring to Superman as god. so we are left to assume he comes from a Christian home, now cut to the helipad scene Lex says and i quote "God was never there to save me from daddy's fist and abominations, no" so it's kind of cut and dry. Lex was raised in a Christian yet abusive home and the quote directly states he believed it was God's responsibility to save him from the abuse, but it never happened, and now that Superman shows up, Lex sees him as God, and he sees it as his chance to get revenge on god for never saving him from "daddy's fists and abominations". maybe don't text throughout the movie and you could understand the plot. I'm not even saying the entire movie was good, but Lex was handled just fine. watch the movie again if you don't believe me
@autumn45147 жыл бұрын
DHC VoLt Okay, so he has a shit motive. What was the point of Batman in this entire thing, in his plan? If he thinks Superman is a god, playing into the ham fisted idea that Superman is Jesus because he's a savior, why pit him against a petty powerless human? If his goal is to defeat superman, why not just start with doomsday, a being built to destroy superman. Oh, right, because Doomsday (who comes with some plot holes of his own) would destroy his city, including his company (which follows with all of his wealth and power) and then ending with him in prison for starting this entire thing, leaving him stuck in a prison with nothing left and ultimately nothing achieved. "Oh you're just too stupid to understand" well when you think about it for more than half a second, his entire plan is pointlessly convoluted and doesn't actually accomplish anything except set him back. If superman wins the doomsday fight, superman lives on meaning he did not succeed his goal. If doomsday won, everyone else dies anyways. He either knew batman couldn't do shit and was just distracting superman, or he was even more retarded. And distracting him wouldn't really do anything, since if he killed his mother or Lois, Superman would do the exact thing Lex is trying to prevent. The whole premise of this movie is just fucked - they put a detective vigilante against - for all intents and purposes - a literal God. No reason to fight in the first place, and no reason for Batman not to be a cloud of atoms an eyeblink after Superman decides to fight.

@mickeymcgee26578 жыл бұрын
Because what could he have done? An exoskeleton powered, kryptonite wielding, well prepared Batman came within a knat's dick hair of being killed by a confused, unwilling, unprepared, severely weakened Superman. What would he have possibly done against TWO fully powered, no-holds barred, raging kryptonians fighting primarily in mid air with enough power to decimate the city, WITHOUT any of the advantages he had in the BVS fight? That's shooting well beyond his range. He'd be a complete non-factor in affecting the outcome and at the very best he'd quite frankly be a liability.

@mickeymcgee26578 жыл бұрын
Jamie Manning Yes, that way he could at least influence the behaviour of his employees. If Batman randomly called up the Metropolis Wayne Industries division they wouldn't take him seriously. The point is that Batman would have had no impact on the battle at all, so Bruce being himself was the better option. Besides, Batman rarely surfaces at day time.

The Sequel - Marvel v DC: Battle of Lunatics Marvel v DC: Battle of Lunatics is a 2016 American feature film featuring the studio characters Zack Snyder and Robert Downey Jr . Directed by Turkish Airlines and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film is the first installment in the the Marvel DC Collaborative universe. It was written by Donald Trump and Mike Pence, and features an ensemble cast that includes Zack Snyder, Henry Cavill, Joss Whedon, Jesse Eisenberg, Robert Downey Jr, and Jai Courtney. Marvel v DC: Battle of Lunatics is the first live-action film to feature Zack Snyder and Robert Downey Jr. together. In the film, criminal mastermind Sony manipulates Marvel into a preemptive battle with DC Comics, whom Sony is obsessed with defeating. The film was announced at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con International, after the release of Turkish Airlines: The Movie. Director Turkish Airlines stated that the film would take inspiration from the DC comic book series, as well as the Marvel Comic books, but clarified that it would follow an original premise. The incarnation of Marvel in the film would also be different from the studio's previous portrayal in the I Hate Marvel Trilogy, serving as a cinematic reboot of the studio. The film is also inspired by narrative elements from the "Lunatics are Smart" story arc. Pre-production began at the bottom of the Atlantic in October 2013, with principal photography starting in May 2014 on the moon. Additional filming also took place on a Turkish Airlines flight. Marvel v DC: Battle of Lunatics premiered at the Lunatic Film Festival on March 19, 2016, and was released international on March 25, 2016, in 2D, 3D, IMAX 3D, 4DX, premium large formats and 70 mm prints. Following a strong debut that set new box office records, the film experienced a historic drop in its second weekend and never recovered. Despite turning a profit, it was deemed a box office disappointment and received generally unfavorable reviews from critics for its tone, screenplay and pacing, though some praised its visual style and acting performances. A director's cut, dubbed the "Ultimate Edition" and features 30 minutes of additional footage, was released digitally on June 28, 2016, and on Blu-ray and DVD on July 19, 2016. A follow-up, Zack Snyder is Smart, is set to be released in November 2017, and a standalone Sony sequel is currently in development.

@Captain Delicious Pants I sort of disagree, Joker wasn't the only good thing about the movies. Two-Face, Scarecrow, and the writing were all just as great as Joker. I don't like it when people say that Joker was literally the only good thing about the movies cause it's not true. Two-Face was one of the best villains and characters in the movie he literally shows how someone can become a villain with just one bad day. Scarecrow is a good villain because he keeps the movies all together and strewn all over media and besides Scarecrow represents Batman/Gotham's fear. The writing was also very good, sure some spots were bland but other than that the writing was solid.

Honestly, if they had added that directors cut scene, the movie would have had made a lot more sense! Think about it, batman needed to learn how to overcum his past and move on, and that's why he wasn't so smart during the movie! He couldn't let go of the past. But superman wanted to stay with batman but couldn't because batman didn't want him, so he got himself a girl and tried to move on.
