After all in the movie we do see a newspaper headline saying that superman literally shifted an entire tectonic plate of the earth to avoid an earthquake from happening. That's like lifting 25 quintillion tons right there. Imo that's pretty strong. But we even saw what happened when superman punched batman straight in the face, he broke half of his mask and he had been previously weakened by the kryptonite gas. Plus him not beating batman with all of his power is kinda what superman does most of the time, and that is holding back.

It was never intended to be a boxing match movie made for kids, full of shitty puns every 5 seconds, or ten superheroes bailing each other out. This is modern mythology, with major themes like the fall from grace, redemption of a Satanic figure, loss of innocence, and the crucifixion of a publicly persecuted icon. It's really a retelling of the oldest Western myths for a modern audience dealing with power and uncertainty in the 21st century. If the movie made you cringe, it's doing its job. Don't laugh but there is an episode of the Muppet Show, Miss Piggy is the damsel in distress, Uncle Deadly is the bad guy and Wayne (from Wayne and Wanda singing duo) is the hero. Also for all we know luthor’s goons may have used some sort of knock out gas or a tranquilizing agent on Martha so she’d go quietly. He threw Lois off a building to purposely get Superman there so he could tell him about Martha being taken.
