I get that, as time goes on, newer readers will think this version of Batman is overrated. I mean, he's a brutal, stoic, Machiavellian lunatic who fights for vengeance and justice. That's just who Batman is nowadays. But y'all gotta understand, the Batman that permeated the zeitgeist at the time this came out was Adam West Batman. The comics version was getting a little bit darker and more serious under Dennis O'Neal and the Bat Offices at DC, but we hadn't seen a Batman like this since arguably the late 30's. More arguably, we've never seen a Batman like this ever.

Yeah this story was great. I really liked the adaptations, paradies and elements of the story. However, this was the beginning point where Batman beats Superman in a lot of adaptations outside of the comics. The prep time truly started here before "Tower of Babel"

Something I never got in the TDKR is why did Batman's mech suit have a giant hole for his mouth? It looks cooler, I guess, but what if Superman just punched him in the jaw? Even if Superman didn't hit him the face, the shockwave from his punches would affect Bruce's exposed jaw. Such is comicbook logic.

This is why I love the Joker, he knew it was finished before Batman did. He ended things on his own terms. He's always been the character to show Batman that what he's fighting for is futile. This is why I hate the stand alone Joker movie, it's a good watch sure, but it misses the point of the joker. To be honest, i believe The Dark Knight Returns is an overrated Batman story that set the stage for Batman being misinterpreted in later comics and in other media. I also dislike how you got some fans who believe that Frank Miller restored Batman back to his darker routes with his story, when in reality, it was actually Dennis O'Neil who restored the character back in the Bronze Age era of Batman in the 70s.
