My favorite thing about Superman is what he reveals about those around him. People struggle and doubt that good can exist. Lex is even cynical of Superman. Others see Superman's goodness and try to exploit it. But others believe and look to him, especially in their most dire circumstances. He IS hope.

I think a hatred for the idea of Superman stems so much from that. Why would someone with so much power and no restrictions want to use that power to help others? Whats he really hiding? How do we know he's not evil? Is it really that hard to believe that that's not some nigh-omnipotent ruler flying above, but a fellow man who's biggest concerns are saving cats from trees? Helping an old woman cross the street? Jumping in front of a bullet for someone, not to assert power, but simply because he's scared someone else could have been hurt? Is it so hard to believe someone could have the unmatched power of a god and still be a wonderful person?

Evil Superman is a boring trope now and I’m glad we’re getting a new Superman movie where he’s back to being the good, hopeful guy. I even reject the versions of him that would turn after, say, Lois Lane is murdered. He wouldn’t turn into a bad guy if someone was killed. Superman is more emotionally stable than ANY of us. They think he’s only physically strong? Yes, it would wreck him, but he already knows he’s going to outlive everyone he loves.

Kingdom Come Superman was an accurate portrayal of what Clark would do if Lois was killed by the joker He lost the will to be Superman and felt the world didn't need him and went back to his parent's farm and worked the fields and lived a modest life Similar to what Tom's Clark did in Crisis on infinite earths

Homelander does have a character arc. Season by season, he increasingly begins to realize that what he wants isn't fame and adoration while occasionally disregarding human life, but the total subjugation of the human race. A belief fostered by his treatment by Vought, whispers by his fascist love interests and his own pathetic loneliness.

The problem with superman nowadays is that they know how to write him in only 2 ways, it's either too naive and stupid or straight evil and heartless. Primarily example of this is in Suicide Squad game, he is the reason to be reckless, and then evil.

Would that it were just Superman. There has been a concerted effort in our culture to demonize established heroes and humanize villains for over a decade. This is a dialectical inversion, engineered to render the distinctions between good and evil meaningless. That creators have not stopped using this narrative device, in spite of widespread fan backlash and declining sales, reflects a broader, more sinister motivation.

As a mellenial, I was old enough to see people want more edgy charecters. The Nolan films, and early 2000's were much more pessimistic than the 90's. I think by the 2010s the US become more hopeful. The 2020s seem to have wrapped back around. I think you can have sympathetic villians and truly good charecters. The best kind of stories are when you understand each POV so well it's agonizing to see them fight. But sometimes you do just wanna see the good guy just win or the bad guy just unambiguous.

It's easy to see why people would reject A character like Superman after so may years of stories with flawed characters that are more relatable than characters that they see as 'overpowered'. Resulting in the misconception that Superman is 'boring', but after 'Man Of Steel' divided fans, it ignited some much needed debate on wether we're dragging the character down to our level A little too much. Even since Alan Moore's 'Watchmen', the superhero archetype has been deconstructed, but the more you deconstruct heroes, they cease to remain heroes. Shazam even points this out when he tells The Justice League that 'they're no longer heroes anymore'. There's nothing wrong with exploring the idea A corrupt Superman with characters like Omni Man, or Homelander, but if that's the only kind of 'Superman' we're getting, and not see the real Superman as A counter balance, then our culture need to reevaluate why we need A character like Supermen. Especially with the way things are in the world right now.

the way I and many others interpret the "...and the American Way" part of the slogan is completely incompatible with our post-modern sensibility, because "...and the American Way" is about being the most powerful entity, whether person or country, in the world and refraining from using that power to conquer it, wanting to help it prosper, nursing it, helping it strive for a better tomorrow, for all rather than some, and frankly, unless you just woke up from an 80 year slumber, it's just not how we look at America anymore. For that reason, "...and a better tomorrow" is a much less hypocritical statement, because regardless of what America does or represents now, Superman will always stand for a better tomorrow.

*I know exactly what you mean.* I don't know if a real Superman movie could effect the positivity of the world but the world has been clearly showing how messed up it is for the pass couple years already. I'm tired of people praising the idea of an evil Superman type character, putting them in "Sigma" edits, or saying that they'll be more like Homelander if they got Superman's powers in real life. I'm tired of that. Me, if I had Superman's powers, I'd end the Russia and Ukraine war, take all the pollution out of the water, take all the space junk from our orbit, and do something about the California fire right now!!!! Ironically, Warner Bros. over dependency on Batman has made me have Batman lower on my personal hero meter and the popularity of evil and fake Supermen have put Superman up in my same meter. You don't know what you have until it's gone I guess. *I am so hyped for the upcoming Superman movie and I think it's poetic that he's going to fight an evil Superman clone in the movie, Ultraman.*

I'm so glad more people are behind this idea of getting Superman (and DC in general) back to a more positive place. My philosophy on the issue is simple: _You cannot subvert Superman because he already exists as a subversion of expectations._ A man is given tremendous power and we expect his first instinct to be to abuse it. Instead, Siegel and Shuster flipped that and made him an upstanding person who strives to do the right thing no matter what. We've had many millennia-worth of stories told about those who misuse their strength for their own glory and ego, so why invert the standout to be just like everyone else? It's not as creative as people think it actually is.

I didn’t get into Superman till I was 17 (21 now) and it started watching Smallville with my dad. Because I used to be one of those people who thought he was boring and overpowered. Since then, I watched other Superman stuff and started reading some comics. I’m about to start All-Star Superman. Behind all that god like power Supes is a chill guy and just as human as us.

Gotta say, I love that scene right at the start of the video. “Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive”. I’m not against Superman being able to bench press a planet, but I do believe I can enjoy his powers more if they were more… measurable. Ironic to say this considering he’s literally an alien but… down to earth lol. In my opinion, those are excellent comparisons to make to show off Superman’s powers because he’s still too powerful to be reckless and must restrain himself for the sake of others but powerful enough to save lives in all the ways he does. The big iconic thing about Superman in the cover of his FIRST APPEARANCE was being able to lift a car over his head. I feel like that level of strength is as strong as he needs to be. Of course stopping a plane too which is much heavier. Hope that makes sense. Also this me think of the issues I’ve heard of modern Spider-Man and how writers don’t let him have good things in life. That to be a good influence is to constantly sacrifice, lose and suffer with it hardly being worth it. Across the Spider-Verse is such a meta commentary on that too. That to be good, sacrifices will be made, no good deed goes unpunished. But honestly, I would love to see a story thay focuses on seeing first hand Spider-Man reaping what he sows. To see for certain that all his efforts trying to be a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man finally encourages New York to truly be better, more friendly and positive. Something perhaps more than the city just still standing in one piece or two. Of course just saving lives will always, ALWAYS be worth it. But perhaps seeing a positive influence in people’s hearts would be really nice to see.

I mean Homelander is just riding the charm and screen presence of Anthony Starr at this point, but yeah he’s a one trick pony. Also the general obsession with ‘hero tropes through an evil lens’ has gotten kinda ‘meh’. What I did like about omniman and Invincible is his Son was, even if he failed, trying to be a hero in the right ways. (I have only seen season 1) if you are gonna invert the vision of idealic superheros at least get a more internal about it. Which I think Invincible did well. Brightburn just did the whole ‘born evil’ thing in a way and I only forgive it cause it intended to make a horror movie.

This was an odd essay to watch, because you bemoan a lack of a Superman who brings hope but then you dismiss Superman and Lois as a "CW show" and say it's "fine." Which leads me to the conclusion that you haven't watched much of it, and certainly didn't watch the final season or the series finale, which was all about the subject of hope. From the moment of his introduction in "Supergirl," Tyler Hoechlin's portrayal of Superman was one based on the concept of a Superman who was positive, friendly, and yes...who was a beacon of hope, and goodness, in the world.

Evil Clark Kent yes, i'm against that... Evil Superman? Not so much, People love Homelander, Omniman, Brightburn... In fact i think world needs MORE Brightburn. Homelander is too tame and weak and Omniman is just former space nazi that loves too much his family. Even Beighburn has a weakness, in wich he is brain washed by his ship... You know what? We need all kinds of Superman types. For example the recent comics of the Phoenix (from the X-Men) feels a lot like Superman (in a good way), but Jean Grey is different from Superman, while Superman is striving for a better tomorrow, the Phoenix (Jean Grey) is after redemption, neither Jean or Clark are evil people, but Jean different from Clark KNOWS too well the consequences of turn to the dark side, the amount of pain and death she can do if she gave up her humanity. In some ways, this idea of an evil Superman actually started with the Dark Phoenix... At least it is one of the most famous comic books where a hero turns evil and end in tragedy.

Christopher Reeves was aces as both Clark Kent and Superman. Something not to easy. Part of the magic was Richard Donner completely knowing the character of both it's not something easy to translate onto the screen. What an amazing film so many amazing talents between Mario Puzo of Godfather fame and John Williams to bring everything together.

I am really hoping that the inclusion of all the other heroes in the new Superman is a building on previous versions of the character. Lemme explain: Superman has always intended to be a beacon, an icon of hope for the Everyman, the populace. My hope is that the heroes in this new universe are as flawed and politically motivated and squabbling as they are in the comics, and that Superman isn’t just trying to be a symbol for everyday people, but the existing “heroes” as well. He’s trying to set a standard for what a super powered hero should be. Please let me be right…

'Evil Superman' is older than regular Superman: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Reign_of_the_Superman That's a story by the original creators of Superman, about what happens when a person gets powers. That person, y'know, isn't a very nice guy. The inspiration for it is pretty obvious. ... But I am not using that as a reason to say it should keep happening. Superman, the Superman we know, was a follow-up. People act like the creators of the character didn't realize that, yes, limitless power could make people into monsters. But they did. 'What if he was EVIL!?!' isn't a clever subversion. The original creators already knew that, yes, that's the likely result. Power corrupts. Being more powerful than other people can make someone think he's BETTER than other people, and can do whatever he likes. They already WROTE that story, themselves. They wrote it first, before they wrote the famous one. They wrote an evil Superman, and then they went on to say, 'But what if there was a guy who was better than that?' That's the key to Superman. The red and blue Superman we know. He wasn't the first 'imagine if a human was SUPERhuman!' character. Even 'The Superman' from that story wasn't the first. The powers aren't the core of the character. Being a good person despite those powers is the big idea. All of these versions where a character is like Superman but a total monster aren't taking the idea further, or doing a more realistic take. C'mon, so long as he's bulletproof and more powerful than a locomotive, you're telling a modern fairy tale, not a true to life story. You didn't make it realistic, you just made it pessimistic and that's not the same. Really, you are a step behind the original creators. Yes. You're not outsmarting these 1930s people from the dawn of comics - you're retreading ground they covered. The comicbook Superman is already a subversion of the original villainous, power-corrupts, destructive style of superman. They knew the point you're trying to make. Then they went a step further and made something optimistic and uplifting, despite it.

I've grown weary of epic battles. The one shot, that one act, of the new Superman saving that one kid looks amazing in a deluge of city/planet destroying brawl between godly characters. And lately I have seen a lot of KZbin shorts talking about some of the more positive stories about Superman being the most human of characters. When I was a teen Western comics were rare and a bit expensive where I lived. My constant fictional inspirations in those days were manga and anime like Dragon Ball, Dragon Quest and Full Metal Alchemist. While we also have Batman and Superman Animated series on TV but a physical thing like a manga collection in your hand feels much more close to heart. Several years ago I stumbled upon the popular Dragon Ball Abridged series on KZbin. While I like the channel for it's funny comedic touches deep down I was a bit uncomfortable with the Western deconstruction of the my favourite story. It's not the DBA series itself that bothered me but rather how the fans, through meme culture, would turn the jokes into supposedly new facts or lore. As reader of the original source material I never get the sense that Goku was a horrible father but then fans of DBA and other channels start to parrot those jokes as some sort of newly-discovered hidden lore.

One of my favorite comics that I’ve read recently was Action Comics # 775. Titled “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?,” the comic was more or less a rejection of modern superheroes with dubious or grey moral character. This is exemplified by the antagonists of the comic, The Elite. Superman fights them and after it seems like they won. Superman comes in seemingly picking them off, one by one. Until their leader, Manchester Black is left. And Superman reveals that he had planned out this scenario, to make it seem like hit lowered himself to The Elite’s level. It’s revealed that he did incapacitate them. And that they would be promptly thrown in prison. Black retaliates saying that he would swear revenge on Superman and that he’s “living in a dream world.” Then we get one of Superman’s best moments where he tells Chester, “You know what Black, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Dreams save us. Dreams lift us up and transform us. And on my soul, I swear that until my of dignity, honor, and justice are the reality we all share - I’ll never stop fighting. Ever.” This comic made me reflect on my own thoughts about Superman and realize that I’ve done what Warner Bros have been doing undervaluing Superman. I hope that we can get Superman as he’s meant to be. An aspirational hero even the heroes of the DC Universe look up to and respect. A hero that people can see and try emulate. A hero that shows that compassion isn’t weakness and that every life is worth fighting for.

I think an excellent Evil Superman who people don’t discuss enough is Bardock. He, like Omniman, is a conquerer and a monster, but he’s not the strongest and he’s not elite. He’s a grunt soldier working under a hegemonic king and a tyrannical emperor. He works an unfulfilling dayjob of slaughter and violence and he expects nothing more or better out of life. It’s when he comes to believe in something, in fighting for a cause other than his employers’ betterment, that he loses everything - the respect of his peers, what’s left of his social standing, his infant son. But he still tries and fails, dying in an attempt to so something meaningful.
