My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

I know it's very tempting but don't take a blow nozzle to that stator. Shop air is very likely to blow debris (little metal bits) into the coils and that insulation is super thin. It's very easy to short out the windings. If you have to clean the stator use a vacuum and soft brush. Don't touch the vacuum to the stator and be gentle with the brush.

To clear things up, if the compass is reading "North" towards the center of the magnet, it is actually a "South" Pole on the magnet. Remember opposite poles attract. Like or similar poles repel. But the concept works for what you are doing since you alternating magnet polarity.

Sounds like I lucked out that when I bought my SCAG mower that it had a Kawasaki engine instead of the Kohler? Also, I smile when I see Bree's video intro of her when she was here in my hometown in Ky. sawing that big log with that big Husqvarna chain saw! I'll be right there where she was next week at the Farm machinery show!!!!

I'm on my daughter's KZbin. I had this happen to me on my 20 plus hp Kohler engine about 12 years ago. Before I removed the magnets from the stator I marked them. I completely clean the epoxy from the flywheel and magnets. It probably doesn't matter, but I wanted to make sure that the magnets were spaced evenly. I got a 5/16" brass rod so it wouldn't stick to the magnets. The 5/16" wasn't quite big enough when I test fitted it. The gap was too big between the last and first magnet. So I wrapped scotch tape around the brass rod about three times. That was too much when I test fitted it. I kept peeling just a little bit of tape until I got it right. I covered the backside of the first magnet with red thread locker. I made sure that the flywheel was positioned so the magnet was on the bottom of the flywheel that way the red thread locker wouldn't run away from the magnet and flywheel. Once that cured, I installed the brass rod and put red thread locker on the second magnet and install it and positioned the flywheel correctly. I waited for that to cure so that way the magnets wouldn't pull towards each other. It was long and tedious, but I was very happy with the result.

I used black silicone to hold the magnets back in place after I sanded the inside track of the flywheel. That was a couple years ago and still good. I don't know if anything is a better glue. Mike
@redmondjp
@redmondjp 7 ай бұрын
@@mtwseneca There are different grades of silicone RTV which have different levels of adhesion. The least-expensive ones stick the least. If you get up into the premium RTVs (such as Permatex Ultra Grey), the adhesion generally gets better. Read the labels. I did this job back in 1987 on my grandfather's AMF lawn tractor after it was in a flood. I didn't know about the N-S magnet orientation then but did use RTV and it appeared to work (at least for awhile, the tractor went away a few years later).

I had a B&S 31000-series engine in an Ariens rider that the magnets came loose from the flywheel and disintegrated, destroying the stator in the process. No known reason why it happened. When it first happened the engine was hard to turn over by hand and made a grinding sound and I thought the piston or crank was damaged. Turns out it was just all the magnet chunks under the flywheel. I cleaned them all out and for the next 6 years I kept the battery charged with a battery tender as a flywheel and stator were stupid expensive.

You don't even need a compass. Just get one magnet and see how it reacts with the other magnet. If it pushes away or is attracted just use the same magnet to test each of the other magnets and alternate them when putting back in.

I think the real crime here isn't that somebody couldn't afford the repair, its that the parts cost so darn much. Part of me gets it, but sometimes??? For example. I have a Dewalt Random Orbit Finish Sander I use ALL THE FREAKING TIME (HUNDREDS of hours). Well, actually it's about the 7th one. Why? Because the sanding pads wear out. They are 100% replaceable...but they cost MORE than a new sander does, with the EXACT SAME PAD. Yep. Last one I looked at a few years ago was $59. I can buy the sander for $49. Even my old high quality Porter Cable Finish Sander (when Porter Cable made quality tools) has a pad that costs $59. That one I do spend the money on, because that sander is a beast. It's old, but the darn thing is as good as any Festool for sure (again, back when Porter Cable made quality tools, and didn't sell out). THIS is the problem. These companies do NOT want you to fix your equipment, they don't. They want you to buy new. I paid $149 for my Echo Weed Whip. Replacement speed head? $50 (local, not the Jungle Web site, or even on-line parts places). Carb Kit? $116 (but they send you a new sparkelator and air filter too). I mean, those two items cost more than what I paid for the entire unit...SHIPPED TO MY HOUSE. That is the real crime. Fact is, they do NOT want people to repair these units, they want you to buy new. Too bad we have become such a disposable society. :(

I had the same experience with printer ink. The ink cost to replace fully was MORE than the printer new! BS!
@WreckDiver99
@WreckDiver99 7 ай бұрын
Funny you say that. Back many years ago Sam's club had a deal on some HP printers for like $49. They had to put a limit on the number purchased. Apparently people were trying to buy 20 and 30 of them...because that was cheaper, at the time, than a single ink cartridge was...of the 2 it used (which was something like $89 then). People were literally going in the parking lot, opening the printer box, grabbing the ink cartridges and tossing the printer, or leaving it in the cart in the parking lot. I really wish there was something that could be done about (not just ink) but repair/replacement parts. Even my dishwasher that needed a basic seal...$59! A basic solenoid valve (literally a $10 item), $99. Spring kit for my clothes washer $499!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yea..$499 for 2 lid springs. So...yea, not doing that job. LOL...

I love repairing stuff like that to save money! I can’t count the amount of equipment ,or things, people have given me to fix for them or just give to me cause they were gonna junk it…..from washer/dryers to chainsaws and yard equipment …..my most recent find was a $1000 fairly new RC car that the owner put away wet….anything metal was rusted up…NOTHING would turn or roll….i did have to give $200 for it but still a good deal considering bearings are just $30, but it’s labor intensive …..but I don’t mind if I can save money 😊

If that's a magnetic pole indicator, yea that's North. If that's a compass, the compass' North is attracted to the magnet's SOUTH pole. Doesn't matter most of the time as long as they alternate, all is good. Once in a while though, when it needs to synchronize with something at the other end it WILL matter then.

OK Chic, Heres a question for you. My tiller has a fuel shut off valve. When you are going to store it for the winter or longer the idea is to turn off the fuel & run all the fuel out of the carb. Gotcha. HOWEVER, with the carb innards dry, is there any rubber seals or what have you which might dry out become brittle and require replacement? Curious in Cancun. !

Hey Bre! Good luck with the new shop! I was hoping you could help me with something. I have a Stihl MS180C (soft start) chainsaw that starts and runs perfectly. BUT, when first started I slide the black lever all the way down to "choke" and lock the trigger. After 1 or 2 pulls it sputters and I raise the black lever up to "run". Of course it starts, but at this point the trigger is still locked and it runs at full speed until I hopefully get to the trigger and release it! Running the saw at full speed (even for a few seconds) when cold can't be good for it, can it? I don't want to ruin it, but that's how I was instructed to start it when I bought it. Would it be better to release the trigger after the first sputter on "choke"? Thanks again for all your wonderful tips!

A bit of redundant information: It's actually so that if the North arrow of the compass points to the magnet, it points to the magnet's southpole and vice versa. But as long as they are alternately positioned it's quite uninteresting and of no consequence. :)

Luckily the battery is good and this engine is on a early 80's rider so the only draw on the battery once running is the ignition coil, have easily run it for 2 hours and still have enough juice left to crank the engine.
