So what happens when you're pulling directly back on that horrible lock system to close the knife, and it slips and does some slicing to your hand on its way by.... 2 knives in the box, and both suck ass.

I gotta agree with your opinion of the knife. They ain't really killing it with the knife of the month. At least not in the last two. I can't believe you like that thing with the duct tape and the needle for 35 bucks! May be worth 5 at the most as far as usefulness. Good video, Doc. I don't always agree with your opinions, but I do respect them. I like how thorough you are about each item.

the black scout knife looks more like a skinning blade.

I feel like i slightly disagree with the zipper being in meh. While being only a one time use item, i feel like that one time could be a lifesaver. Definitely a meh until you need it item. But i do agree the price is a bit high, and it would be nice if they had given you both sizes at that price. But I still think it's a really solid inclusion since it fully repairs something in a way you couldn't do with really any other item in the box. That said, i feel like this is one of the best boxes i've seen, minus the knife of the month with is kinda neat, really ugly color on the blade IMO.
@dustinsheets67706 жыл бұрын
If the featherstick had a black pvd coating I would like it as a skinning or tackle box knife. The color is ugly an the coating has to much of a texture. The coating really hurts it's slicing an cutting ability, poor decision to use that coating an color

The Pocket Bushman was intended to be a bare-bones pocket carry version of their classic Bushman knife from back when they had a shop in South Africa for the stamped steel products. For a budget knife you'd keep in your tackle-box, it isn't half bad. I agree though, horrible and unwieldy lock and grip. Not sure it was meant to be anything other than utilitarian. That black scout knife looks like a game dressing blade, not really to be used for much else. The coating looks rough, like they were just trying to cover for it being so tiny in the handle and stout in the belly. Weird. Pretty cool box full of things I wouldn't have thought of in my mass rush to get out of Dodge.

Yeah, this was a very disappointing box for me value wise. I felt they heavily over inflated the prices when many item can be bought way cheaper at the hardware store. I see the Cold Steel knife as more of a BudK quality knife and the KOTM seems more practical as a skinning knife. The SOG Baton made sense for this box. Once again, very useful box just not priced right.
@dwstrange3346 жыл бұрын
The BSS knife is bs. That company, which has a youtube channel as well, pushes some overpriced stuff pretty regularly. Some of it "looks" good, but they always demand a premium. That's a disappointing one for sure. They say its great for feathersticking, hence the name, but would you ever carry a single purpose knife into the woods?
@Marlah46 жыл бұрын
That BSS knife is crap. Awesome box otherwise. Great review!
@marshalllaw1236 жыл бұрын
If ever a theme called for a good multi tool as the knife of the month, "repair anything" sounds like it. Instead, enjoy this tiny skinning knife! Seems like they missed the mark a bit, but overall a pretty good box.
@nicholasramsey75996 жыл бұрын
Originally this knife was last months and the baton multi tool was this months shipment delay caused the swap in products.
@marshalllaw1236 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Ramsey I know, but I said a GOOD multi tool; that SOG baton do-hickey is a piece of novelty junk. For the stated msrp of the included kotm they could've come up with far better options imo. I guess they were kinda stuck since they'd already bought both, but seems like a letdown followed by another letdown.

I'm a bit late, but I actually like the knife of the month. I'm a butcher, and the shape of it looks really useful for more detailed work on breaking down some of the cuts. But, actually in hand it may be a different feel. As a general tool, pass, but for a specific use, I really like it.
@DocP91B6 жыл бұрын
I would love to watch you work with it, to see how it does in a specific use like that. Thanks for your input!
@Claybo6 жыл бұрын
@@DocP91B A good test would be seeing how it removes the fat down to the silver skin on a pork loin. Based on shape alone, probably better to use it as a draw knife, kind of like you're shaving the loin towards you, instead of pushing the fat away.

Hey doc! I have to say your camera work is getting really amazing!. You got all three piles in the shot and even the box was partially in shot OUT STANDING! I did notice something weird happened with the perspective though when it came time to do the knife of the month it barrly fit in frame... the larger knife was fine which makes me think maybe the camera was knocked? wouldn't be an issue but from the viewers perspective the knife didn't look all that small. Looked like a cute cutlass, but not teeny weeny as you were describing it. Anyway just thought I would put my two cents in. Totally unrelated second question. What brand of Stethoskope do you prefer? I can't stand the ones that the company gives us on the ambulance, the pair I was given by my school just broke, One of my trainers had a pair of Litman Master Cartiology IVs and they were AMAZING but also $300.00. my mom gifted me with a very strange pair that seems alright but has two tubes(one for each ear) comming out of the Diaphram/bell. I was wondering what your preferred type and brand was when you were a medical professional. Thanks :-)
@DocP91B6 жыл бұрын
Let me just knock this out up front. There is no replacemenr for a Littman. I carried a Cardiology III for years. Pricey, I know, but in the back of a busy bus the sounds are clear as day. Just stay away from that double tubed Sprauge. Its a nice gift and all but when the tubes rub together it creates artifact sounds. Not bad for the hospital setting, but not what you want in the back of the ambulance moving, bumping, and making those tube rub all over each other. Now on the the real stuff...thanks, I've been working on the camera positioning. It did get knocked a couple of times and I tried to work it back to the original spot. I also moved my position around a little too.
@Thugorp6 жыл бұрын
This was possibly the most useful possible response to my question thanks you and noted. I will replace my new gift with something more usable when I get my next paycheck. Thank you :-)

I love the Nesmuc blade shape. Don't like the coating. I like small fixed blades. Neuropathy from the cancer in my lymph nodes makes holding them painful if they're too heavy. I bought the CRKT Raikiri Field Strip because it was on sale for $32. The Black Scout Featherstick is listed for $79 on Battleboxs' Amazon store & Black Scout Survival website. Maybe Battlebox bought them, too. $129 is outrageous. Everyone needs to boycott Battlebox and all their subsidiaries until they clean up their monopolizing acts.

That cheaper knife looks REALLY uncomfortable to use. Yeah man, drill out those rivets holding the clip on and coat it with something a little more nice to hold.

I also got this box, but on the PRO level. The idea was GREAT! But, all the items are repetitious...... Tape, Tape, Tape, Tape, Glue, Glue, Glue, Thread, Thread, Thread, Thread, Needles, Needles, etc... THEN they throw in the RIPSPOOL which is all of those combined... I dont think there was really any thought put into this box, was basically "Lets have a box with LOTS of stuff in it, so it seems like a great deal"... But, everything they put in the box were the same things, just with different names. This box made me cancel immediately. And dont even get me started on that accident waiting to happen Bushman knife.... Which makes no sense in the box, can get a really decent MULTITOOL for that price they claimed, which would fit better in a "Repair Anything box" Sorry for the rant! But just my 2 cents.

I've noticed that Cold Steel is one of the most polarizing knife manufacturers. I've seen channels that praise CS as the second coming, I've seen Meh reviews, and I've seen them be crucified. The very definition of a hit or miss company.
@ianmacbrooke46176 жыл бұрын
I think our biggest complaint was always the pricing. They were one of the first on the high-end, high-priced spectrum before Spyderco and Kershaw started to make a serious bid for our spendable income and it was a bit of a shock. Before them, it was cheap S&W, Walmart partnerships and Gerber. They kind of opened up the market for the better steel and stronger locks.
@dustinsheets67706 жыл бұрын
Eric Stephenson I have 2 broken cold steel knives. Both of them the blade cracked an broke off. One is a fixed blade an other is more of a machete style. I will never buy another cold steel. My smith an Wesson machete has taken a beating over the years an still works great.
@angelaabrams91086 жыл бұрын
The only item I own from cold steel is their trail boss axe. 27" axe you can get for $30 on Amazon if you are patient, and it's got a nice hickory handle (just sand off the varnish). I'm not a fan of their knives or novelty "tools", but I do love the camp axe. Just my two cents.

You were dead on the mark on this box. I understand the idea behind the featherstick it's basically a little none threatening knock knife for small hiking tasks and maybe some skinning. It's cool that BB designed it and it's American made. But, it was not the kind of knife I would carry on a hike. Some would love it just not me. For a small blade I would take the cub. I saw sneak peaks and lowered to pro because of it. I admit I haven't handled one and sometimes that can win you over but I don't think it's the case. Just personal preference. The cold steel I love though good tool box knife watch knife review they beat that knife up and it keeps going. The rest was awesome and already in kits. Great review I couldn't argue about it at all.

that knife of the month looks like it was one of those Zombie knives that was all over KZbin the past couple of years and this was one of those that never got released and it has been "repainted".

Hey Doc, I too really like and see a lot of use in most of these items. But like you, I’m sorely disappointed with the feather stick knife. I do actually like the cold steel knife though. The handle does leave something to be desired but I have been using the crap out of it the last three days and it’s pulling it’s weight so far. Actually a pretty good blade.
@Frank_Audun6 жыл бұрын
The clear tape i guess works best for clothes, like the down jacket. You can wash it, it's more flexible and so on. Get one small hole in the down jacket and you leave a trail of feathers after you. The glue thingy thingy thing would work great on tents for example. It's tough, badass, dependeble. It will work, could also use one bike wheels and other stuff.
