Kelly Kettles are great if you're camping in an area where they kinda frown on campfires, they are/were used by the military here in the UK. They've been around for decades.
@KleckerKnives
@KleckerKnives 6 жыл бұрын
It's a common mis-conception that the screw "backs out". It may seem like that is happening, but that is not what causes the "rattle" that you are hearing. This part is something you might not know about what is going on when you use the KLAX. As the KLAX is used, the force of the impact will drive the metal clamps into the handle notches and compress the wood. The same thing happens in a full size ax head/handle. In that case you pound a metalwedge inside the wood ax handle to crush it inside of the large hole in the metal ax. The fact that the wood in both cases gets "crushed" enables it to provide enough force to hold the head in place. For the KLAX, to provide the necessary crushing force, you would cycle it several times hitting both ends on a log and then tightening the knob. The harder you hit or the more times you hit, the more the wood will be compressed. After several minutes of this, the handle will be much more rigid and will require only periodic re-tightening. You'll notice through use that over time, the clamps will dig deeper into the handle material (making it less snug) giving the perception that the screws are loosening. As with any ax, a wooden handle is a consumable item (not a permanent one), when the handle is no longer usable, you would replace it. NOTE: You might not realize that the "Knob" has a small amount of designed-in clearance on the main threaded Rod so that the impact force is not transmitted directly into the Knob itself. We learned lesson that on the very first prototoype. Making the knob with some clearance has eliminated that issue entirely. but, even if it rattles, the screw is not loosening like you might assume. Another important point is that the bolts used are Grade 12.9 which the strongest commercially available steel grade for this size screw. It is so strong that when I did the "pull" test using my truck dragging another truck with the KLAX, the threaded Rod only deflected by 0.030" total and it remained fulling functional and able to cycle. This is a very robust design with a lifetime warranty. Like we tell people looking to purchase the KLAX, if you buy it because you want to replace your full-size ax or even your camping hatchet, then save your money. That is not what this was designed for. The people who benefit most from the KLAX are folks who want to take along a good sharp hand tool (the same weight as a Leatherman Super Tool) to get them through whatever nature throws at them but not have to take up 18-36" inches of storage space to do it. But when things get really bad and you are stuck in the woods, you can take this tool that fits easily in the back pocket of your jeans and turn it into an ax in minutes and be chopping branches to make a shelter, de-limbing them in seconds using the knife edge and then feathering some sticks for kindling about five times faster than you can with any folding knife. We have testimonials from people who hike the Pacific Crest Trail, take river treks 1000 miles long, bush pilots in Alaska, and countless first responders who say that this tool was perfect for them and they would never willingly part with it. It is not the perfect tool for every job, but for a lot of jobs you will not find a better tool.

That little Vaughan micro axe(before their quality went down) was the basis of Mike Stewart's mini-axe sold by Bark River. If you can find the archived discussions on the techniques to sharpen it like the bark river, then you will have an amazing tiny axe. It was also used in an experiment with using the head of that axe with a handle at least twice as long, which produced a VERY lightweight axe that chopped WAY out of it's weight class. The Kelly Kettle is a classic and there are about three brands sold around the world. The chimney effect makes it VERY effective at heating with small bits of wood. They have been out for years and years. The lantern is very nice and if you disconnect the strap from the connector at the front lens, you can connect it to the other side at the back and have a vertical carry strap. Sunglasses like that are typically included in arctic pilot's survival kits, as getting snow blind is a lethal problem in a survival situation.

I have one, and it backed out on me as well. I called customer support and they said that wood that extends passed the axe head is there so you can lash it down tighter. Same if you cut your own handle. Leave some excess to lash and pinch down on the head. The clamps are there to secure it in place to make lashing it easier.

I have an idea for the hatchet. I don't think it's going to function as a log splitting or tree cutting, so i suggest to sharpen to a very acute angle (shaving sharp) and use it for a self defence against wild animal or used it for preparation in a camp or something

Vaughn subzero pocket axes are the best available for a good price, they're 1080. when you sharpen it, dont make the mistake most do, sharpen it like you would a knife. 20 degrees or so. the only difference being make the bevel slightly convex

Vaughan & Bushnell mfg is a great company who's been on top in the hammer game for the past 100 years. They make some great hatchets as well, not fancy and don't come sharp but the steel is great. This little sub zero hatchet is a real steal at $20 and the 1080 steel they use is great, plus it's the only hatchet in production today with convex cheeks. Once you put a great edge on it it'll sure outperform the GB mini. Btw battlebox ripped everyone off, they show the msrp for this Vaughan sub zero hatchet at $3 more than direct from the manufacturer and don't even include the sheath that comes with them. It's not a great sheath being that thick padded vinyl stuff, but they do normally come with them and they do work so it should be in there.

kelly kettles are one of the best camping / survival items for boiling water .. super fast and efficient .you can burn grass, twigs, pine cones. newspaper ,, whatever ,,, you can use them anywhere as they have an enclosed fire box ,, you can carry water in them ,, infact their only downside is they are bulky due to the design but it's that same design that makes it so efficient ,,a must have item in my view ,,even for the home ,power cuts etc best thing in the box by far

The Klax seems to be an axe designed by a person who doesn't use axes for people who also don't use axes. Years ago when I saw this axe come out, it was at that moment that I felt the survival marketing of gimmicky tools had reached it's lowest point. This just goes to show that people have forgotten what makes a good axe and why they are designed the way they are and how they are used. However it is understandable as chainsaws are awesome, especially if you have properly used axes for a while.
