Noora is an underrated powerhouse. Old battle beast albums have some of the best music that I go back to time and again. This song is so good. Not my favourite from them but damned good. Can't wait for circus of doom!

I would agree with "unknown" rather than "underrated." Battle Beast is still very modestly known outside of Finland. And it's what Noora is best know of.

Oh, I never noticed Louhi - Louhimo similarity. Yeah you can be proud. But the "mo" ending there, actually means it's a place name. Many Finnish names come from features of nature where the person probably lived, like Vuorinen (mountaineous), Hietala (fine sand place), Nevalainen (person from a fen). Louhimo probably means a rocky place. Louhi (known with many other names too, like Loviatar) is the daughter of the god Tuoni and and goddes Tuonetar of Tuonela (underworld, afterlife). She is a very powerful goddess (in spells and prayers) or human avatar (in stories). And not only an evil character, but she is the opponent of the main heroes (or avatars of gods) of ancient Finnish mythology, so she is PORTRAYED as evil by her opponents. For example, when ancient Finns suffered pains and injuries, they prayed for the daughters of Tuoni and Tuonetar (of whome Louhi is one) to aid them, remove the pain and heal. Kivutar for example suffers the pains of those who pray for her help as she is turning this Pain-stone to sink the pains of people inside a mountain, and she always weeps for the pain when she does it. Vammatar helps people that have suffered an injury. Kalma is another daughter who is called in prayers to give strength to people and aid them, she is actually the Death (but death can remove pains too). Also Louhi had the most beautiful daughter them heroes came to woo. Louhi's other name Lovitar also connects her to shamans, she of course could travel between the worlds, as do shamans when they help people. So not all underworld and afterlife means bad, they can also be helpers, protectors of people.

BTW, also dragon is louhikäärme or lohikäärme in Finnish. The etymologies aren't agreed to, but "käärme" means snake. Lohikäärme directly translated means "salmon snake" while as "louhi käärme" could mean "cliff snake" or something like that. But lohikäärme may also be a translated loanword that has been finnished, an easier name to say. Personally I'm attracted to salmon snake being the original meaning, as these prehistoric boats were used on river travel too, and men pulled them against strong rapids. Alike salmons jump against the flow in rapids. And the Viking Age boat was called Uisko in Finnish, which means (water) snake. So... salmon snake, with dragon head. It sounds perfect!

Priest and Professor Mikael Agricola is the man who translated the Bible into a finnish language in the fifteenth century. Once a time when he was doing that gigantig work, he asked the Finns what a dragon means in Finnish? Then Finns said it was (Louhen käärme) "Louhe's serpent", but professor Agricola translated it into the Bible as word as "Lohikäärme" , as means in direct tarnslated in english a salmon-serpent but it also means a dragon in english.@@Aurinkohirvi

She's one of the few females I'd rank with Bruce Dickinson and Ronnie James Dio. Great song, great reaction!

You really have done your homework on Finnish folklore. I really appreciate it a lot. Noora is an insane singer. Her vocal range, and pure singing power is just mindblowing. Her solo songs are awesome too.

Nice that you took a look to Kalevala chapters, appreciated. I've got a ticket to the Battle Beast's album release gig on Feb 5th.. looking forward to it.

Good luck. I was going to go to Nightwish's Tampere concert, but I don't think it's happening (30.1.22). But as it stands with the planned restrictions, Feb 5th might be ok...

Nice touch that you dive into finnish mythology - thanks for your reaction! LOUHI could be pronounced as "low-he" ... but no pause in between and both words just shortly and promptly or something. Take care!

Just stubmled across with this channel so haven't checked out much yet. But if you're interested in Kalevala then do check out Amorphis. Especially their older songs (and some of the newer ones as well) are based on the stories of Kalevala.

Maybe her name has some mythological etymology behind it, but "louhimo" is basically just "quarry" in modern day Finnish. There is the idea that Finns live under the North Star and birds do have a significant role in the Finnish mythology and all that, so maybe she isn't just making grand gestures for the sake of it. The nerd thing would be, that Jacob Grimm appreciated Kalevala and later on J.R.R. Tolkien found the Finnish language and Kalevala inspiring. I thought this is going to a ballad. Until it's NOT. Sweet cheeses in chickenbasket that is a good one! I was betting Master on Illusion being the best single they release from the album. But now I'm about to change my mind. Need to listen a few more time. Or why am I trying to pick a favorite? They're both awesome!
