I have to disagree with you on the art style man, looks amazing to me, especially the character designs. Just my opinion.

Joe Mad is very much an acquired taste. Im not into shoulderpads bigger than my head personally, or giant hands, but I get there are people into that look.
@Blurgleflargle7 жыл бұрын
To be fair, Joe Mad's originals are at least more subtle about their deformities than most modern media inspired by his work. Aside from Monika's ridiculous, watermelon-sized boobs, of course (which have been toned down significantly for this game). And his style is also more detailed and refined than anything you see in WoW,Torchlight, LoL, and what have you.
@Katomaster7 жыл бұрын
What Karak said was the art was pretty well done/executed, but the creativity and design wasn't that distinctive. We can try to come to an agreement about that, you can objectively see the designs and the characters are less than unique compared to other games with a similar setting. What stands out is the style, Joe Madureira is the master of this kind of "AMERIMANGA", he was one of the biggest exponents of that style back in the 90's.

BUY & BUY I love this game and the art of Joe Mad! I bought the game twice; once for the Switch and for the PS4. I’d buy any and all upcoming Battle Chaser games for all my systems. Many may not appreciate the type of game and I guess it’s not for everyone but not everyone knows a really good game. This game is not shallow, it’s deep. Plenty of monsters, great story, excellent crafting (not some games I’m not going to mention), ultimate weapons, perks, a battle arena (FF VII?), Hunts, random dungeons (Dark Cloud), clever use of over charge in battles, clever use of buffs and debuffs, fun boss battles, and FISHING! (Thanks again Dark Cloud). For me a very satisfying game.

The big downside is that you can only have 3 heroes in a party at a time and the other 3 which are not with you don't level up. So in the end you're stuck with the characters you choose. I loved that in Dragon Age Inquisition I could switch characters in my party at any time without any consequences.

If I didn't already know that Joe Mad did the art for this game, and the comic it is based off of, one look would give that away. I love his art, especially for video games. The look of everything really reminds me of the Darksiders games. Mad's style really translates well to both those games and this. From what you showed I can see what you mean by the lack of "pop" to characters and stuff sometimes, but I still dig it. This game seems fun, but also seems like something I'll look at when its between $10-$15. Great review, Karak, thanks for all the hard work you put in to get these reviews out to us.

I think ultimately it's important not to get into this game expecting a full-blown, story-heavy JRPG experience. What you actually get is probably best described as Titan Quest with party- and turn-based combat. So, there's a good deal of in-between narrative to keep things together (enough for me to warrant the comparison to Titan Quest over Diablo), but dungeon crawling, monster slaying, and loot grinding is what you'll be spending most time with.
@stasisbal7 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting comparison and actually sounds appealing to me. I'm less and less inclined to want to sit through a bunch of cuts scenes and more inclined to skip to the gameplay these days. Unless the story is tied directly into or a part of the gameplay, of course, which is what video games should strive for.

This is actually the first game where I LIKED the fishing. The fact that it's simple isn't a fault... it's a perk. I didn't mind taking a few minutes to stop and clear out a pool of fish because it was simple, I didnt have to swap out my weapon for a fishing pole or anything, and the Shadow Coin rewards for doing it are great.

Nice review. I remember the comic from ages ago and the game being a Kickstarter but totally forgot about it until I saw Fevir streaming it yesterday. Despite your wait for sale recommendation I'm probably going to buy it now since the price is reasonable. The combination of the art style and gameplay sold me. I miss this old school style JRPG combat. Part of the reason I no longer play JRPGs is because seemingly all of them have switched to a hybrid action combat setup and I've never played one that I enjoy. It just feels off.

*Just commenting because YT won't stop slipping this into my recommendations* What I love most about it is that the little girl is the Tank while the big hulking war golem is the Cleric. It's a small design choice that made sense because of the comic where Calibretto got crushed most of the time and Gully usually takes the hardest hits unscathed. (And I love how you mentioned the pawn system of Dragon's Dogma, one of my favorite systems in an RPG ever)

This might be my new favorite game review channel. I think the art style hinges on how much you like Joe Maduriera's artwork. I've been a huge fan of his since his early days of drawing X-Men, so this game is gorgeous to me. To someone who isn't a fan of his...I can see where it'd be just "meh."

You can really see how long and deep Divinity Original Sin 2 is by how long its taking Karak to review it. This is a good thing! You can't rush through this huge game and he still has to put out reviews in the meantime for other games so it may take awhile longer than us playing the game to finish. Hell I'm only half way through and I've put in over 140 hrs since launch. It's a big game but so far the best RPG I've ever played and that's including old days of Balders Gate and even far back to Ultima 1-9.

A very informative review,I agree with a lot of it ,though I think I enjoyed it more than the reviewer. I would have said a buy at the very reasonable price but each to his own :).

Just finished the entire game, never had a glitch once. Before I started playing they bumped up the difficulty and I've died many times as each dungeon I ran was legendary. Really disagree with your comments on the art style. I find each character to be unique and interesting as well as the story. Also I wanted to add that there are MANY effective group set ups that you can choose from depending on whatever you like. If you aren't into RPG's this game won't change your mind. I am and I didn't find the game to drag out at all. It's very well paced. I love all the optional extra's they've included for this very reason. Do them at your own pace if at all. For me this is an easy buy. I grabbed it for 20$ on steam and feel very fulfilled. I have only minor criticisms about the game if any.

It's amazing to see the characters I loved from the comic in 3D form. Being helmed by Madureira, its understandable that the models are some of the most accurate that I've seen... aka perfect. I enjoyed your jab about having more than 3 characters and the world ending. I don't understand why game devs keep making these great ensembles of characters and then force you to ignore over half of them at a time. Now, some games make it a point that you need to choose who your allies are, especially if there is a morality/approval system, but this doesn't seem like one of those games.
