Army compotition is big on this game. Spears to hold , swords to attack , horse infantry to flank , charge from the back and to clean up the ones trying to escape. Front line in a concave shape to get the most units in the fight . Spears units spreed out in a long lines , swords tight in two lines . Archers in back . Not using up your archer ammo puts you at a disadvantage . Its free damage with almost no return damage. Archers on the flanks including General units since their all archers. Once they fully engage your lines move the archers around the flanks and shoot into the side of their formations. Shooting frome the side or back will increase the damage they take. Flank around with Cavalry and charge them in the back . Cant go wrong with a little artillery in the mix. Lots of archers with a few spears and swords to defend your city's once you get walls. I know you said no exploits but early in the game you can run out and kill their rams and siege to stop any attack on your walled city.

Hey Apollo, (THANK YOU AND PLEASE READ THIS)some food for thought as someone with over 1500+ hours in Medieval 2/DaC on if you keep going with your campaign, if you restart your campaign, and general battle strategy. For your current campaign you’re doing pretty good. Rough start but you’re recovering. One thing to note that you probably noticed is that every nation gets 2 death stacks, one when their capital is conquered and one when they are below 3 settlements. I’d recommend attacking the city directly north of dol guldor. I believe it’s called Rotheslburg (or something like that). If you don’t have the forces to attack and defend it Rotheslburg I would destroy all the buildings in Fenholm, and sell it to the dwarves of kazad dum as a partial northern buffer. Fenholm is bordered by not only dol guldor, but also Goblings of Moria who will surely attack you. (What you’ve missed). Yavannas Union. This is a script that popped up at the beginning of your campaign asking you to ally with the wood elves. If you do that you get attacked by a script army at turn 50ish by Mordor. It isn’t a difficult army if you prepare but you have a choice whether to accept aid from the wood elves (you will receive 4 units of basic Lothlorien archers) or to stand alone. If you accept aid after the battle you gain all of the wood elves territory, armies, and generals (yes custom ones too). If you don’t you get like 3 unique units and a powerful unique building as well as a possible general (I’m not sure on that). I’m not sure if that means you can no longer do the script if your past turn 50 As for if you decide to restart here’s some tips from me. Stables and militia garrisons immediately. Also I’d give the middle finger to economy for the first 10-20 turns. Capture three regions, the one north to you, the one south east to you, and the one in Fangorn held by Isen-gaurd. Taking these three gives you some options, you can either hold all of them, or sell some of them to nations for extra cash and as a buffer. It’s important to note that if you combine Celeborn, Haldir, and maybe one unit of spearman or an archer unit they can take all three of those. They are that powerful. Celeborn himself can take an absolute beating (I think he has 10 hit points or something). Me personally I’d keep the fangorn one until you need the extra cash then sell it to Rohan , sell the south eastern settlement to Rohan immediately and keep the northern one. I find even if kazad-dum holds the northern one Dol guldor will just march right through that territory to your capital. If you hold the northern one you will get solely attacked from there. There are pros and cons to all options though. Hope this is helpful and thanks for the series! I like to listen to it while working or doing things around the house.

Dol Guldur ("Hill of Dark Sorcery") was once a fortress of Sivan Elves named Amon Lanc ("Bald Hill"). I think you should re-name it back to its original name now after you've conquered it. This also should help to avoid confusion between your settlement and enemy faction.

Achnod Iaun, as you admitted, was totally saved by a glitch. If those goblins on a hill would have continued around and hit you in the back while you were fighting on both sides, that would have been gg. If those wargs had circled around and hit you in the back, gg. Even if they had only moved after you were concentrating on those maulers, gg. Not to mention that having more of their friends nearby, just absent from any elves they would have killed, would have bolstered the morale.

Dol Guldor Doomstack is not good news for you. Neither is Khamul. If he takes control over a full stack of orcs, you can forget about breaking the army, they would fight to the last orc as long as Khamul is 'alive'. While you hold Dol Guldur, he would not spawn back to Dol Guldur faction, though. Indeed, he would spawn to Mordor and then Mordor keeps him until he 'dies' again. I think it checks at the end of the spawn timer if Dol Guldur faction holds the Dol Guldur settlement, and if it does, he spawns for Dol Guldur. But if you get lucky, he would be out of Dol Guldur's pocket for a while. Indeed, that could be an argument to go out and kill him on the field while he is not leading an army and you hold DG.

Lucky! Had the larger force attacked you, they might have tied you down longer, and caused more casualties. Instead, it was a spent force, mere 200 orcs. By contrast, if you had to run up the hill, with extra 1000 Orc Defenders (who are quite tanky for orcs), I think that would have at best crippled your army. So, congrats for that. Now let's see you keep it. ;) (Half watched at this point, another half an hour to go.)
