I’ve always had a soft spot for Bongo, so it’s painful to see him struggling to maintain his status in the pack’ and to be so beat up that he isn’t in fighting trim. This is the part of nature sorting itself through brutality that is difficult to see. I hope Bongo survives this without getting fatally wounded.

Hyena dynamics aside, it's amazing to see Kevin's relation with these guys. Just looking at the opening footage where Kevin calls to Bonga and gives him a scratch is truly touching. And the part at about 7.12 where the hyenas are just sniffing all over Kevin is very telling of the trust there. As for hyenas being "brutal" - that's true, but I think a good hard look at ourselves reveals a brutality that is also hard to rival. Thanks so much for another really informative hyena video. So sorry for the loss of Agip ... And I hope Bongo finds a place!

RIP Agip! I'm glad the guy had a good life and died peacefully. I feel bad for Bongo and while the way he was treated can seem cruel to a human, it is actually far less brutal than human power struggles which historically resulted in many deaths. Honestly, given how crucial it is for these guys that they are led by the very best - they do share an ecological niche with lions, after all - I can absolutely see how such behaviour is necessary. I've been wondering what would happen to the dynamics after we got the news that Agip passed away. I didn't expect Bongo to be overthrown though, thought maybe the power struggle would be further down the ranks. I've never seen Bongo look so scared before. What I find to be very interesting is that while the hyenas are very concerned with each other, they seem to be relatively friendly with you considering all the shuffling going on. It wouldn't surprise me if they tried to test you, but I wonder if they don't see you on any side or as a concern because you have a good relationship with all of them? Or because they place you really high up in the hierarchy? Since they seem to want head and chin scratches rather than challenge you.

I bet their opinions would change if he tried challenging people and showing favoritism though, but they seem to think of him as impartial. Iirc from another video, he said it’s important to pet the leader first and stuff sometimes because they still want you to respect the hierarchy even if you’re not a part of it, but I’m not sure

@@robbierotten2024 no that's a thing. Kevin will show favoritsm by respecting the hierachy. He's said before, i think with geena. First top dog gets attention, and he goes down from there, otherwise he would cause issues himself. I'm thinking they see him as another luxury or resource, so top dogs get more than lower ranks

I also think Kevin's place in a hyena clan is quite different than his place in lion prides. the lions consider him family, the _all-father_ and treat him accordingly. hyena society is matriarchal and every hyena knows instantly Kevin is male. the hyena dudes club may even work differently for Kevin than Geena's group. one thing seems clear though: Kevin operates outside their 'political system'

I think that the head and chin scratches are pleasant to the Hyenas so they are not concerned with asserting dominance at that time. They just are enjoying the positive attention.

However, I don't think it's that they nessiciarily UNDERSTAND Kevin is not a Hyena(They know he can't do certain things, and will pet them and do things other Heynas can't do... so they treat him like a weird tall Hyena)- but rather, Kevin constantly approaches with caution and is non-threatening and submissive with them. He knows from experience when it is time to leave and when it's too dangerous to touch any of them. Kevin has already stated that despite being human, they WILL go after him if he fails to respect the clan social rules. And If kevin ignores the monarch too much, the monarch will respond by attacking the Hyena he IS paying attention to. So what Kevin has said he has to do.. is identify the monarch first; and then made sure to be the monarchs petting dispenser to avoid the clan getting angry at him.

Yea I was thinking about the same. Maybe not that he is in danger, I think not but whether he has any role to play in this hyena politics. Or if he is compleltley above that in their eyes. But I guess its somehow or seems that like that to be the case. I mean they see him through the fence with the lions and vice versa. And they never have any problems with him. So all the animals there must see him with different eyes. Some special member of the pack or something I dont know. I hope he speaks about that someday.

In the sense that everything Kev does in the enclosures (or with the animals outside of them) is dangerous, yes. However, the only time I was worried was when it seemed he was following Bongo into the back corner of the enclosure - but Kevin, of course, read the situation perfectly, kept a sufficient distance and could reassure Bongo.

Amazing how they strive and survive on the "animal communication". When you focus on their individuality as much as Kevin, you can read their intentions. You watch, and he reads. He absolutely knows his animals... because he loves and cares for their well being, 24 hours a day.

RIP Agip. I hope things calm down soon, I hate seeing them get hurt. You know Kevin, watching them and listening to you explain things makes gives me Lion King vibes, it's like watching the story behind the hyenas in the movie lol. I love each and every one of them, it does seem harsh, but it is nature. The..."circle of life" so to speak. Even though seeing Bongo so afraid broke my heart.
