I think the point he was making is telescopes typically have a higher exposure to get as much light as possible, so the rings look like a continuous streak that almost appears to be a solid object rather than the millions of pieces of rocks and ice that actually make it up. Obviously he was doing a bit but I think that was his general point.

I love that everyone at Funhaus are genuinely nice people that actually care about their fans and are generally involved in the community. They go above and beyond for us with live events and being consistently hilarious and entertaining to watch every day. I'm sure I'm not the only one that checks in every day to watch a new video or listen to a new podcast. One of the greatest channels I have ever followed. I hope to one day meet them all and it'll make a great memory.

Actually James, from a distance Saturn has rings that look like that. What you're describing is an close up view, or when you're in the rings. The rocks and ice that make it up the rings are actually miles apart, but Saturn's size makes it look small and compact.

Actually, you can see Saturn's rings just fine in visible light by eye in a telescope, and you would be able to see them by eye if you were orbiting Saturn like the Cassini spacecraft. James seems to be referring to the way long exposures using CCD cameras reveal details and color that the human eye cannot normally perceive, even with a telescope. This is because human night vision is colorblind and the color-perceiving cones in our retinas are much less sensitive than the rods that provide sensitivity to light in dark conditions. CCD cameras can collect light for many minutes at a time and provide color images of objects too dim for the human eye to see.
