Nah, its a respect thing you gotta call them chef because its not just like some sideline reporter, they're also teaching and judging them. One thing that I don't think they show about masterchef is that they get lectures, lessons and stuff through the whole season. Its like calling your college professor buddy. Michael is nice enough to let him know so he doesn't repeat the mistake over and over again.

For example, in the early seasons on Masterchef US, the contestants talked to the judges using only their first name. Granted, they didn't call them "buddy," but there's less respect than if they'd call them "chef" instead.
