As a brazilian I’m a bit confused to what people in Canada consider to be south american. I mean, sure I’ve had churros and panna cotta before. But to me it’s like someone asked me to do canadian cuisine and I do a pizza because, hey, there’s pizza in Canada, right? And even though pizza is italian I’ll just put some maple syrup on top to make it canadian.... To give them a break I completely understand that south american cuisine is not very known and I really don’t expect people from abroad to know. I guess the most known food is empanada (cause there were a few presented), but I’ve never eaten them like that, even the ones I had at fine dining. I’m surprised nobody thought about making a ceviche. Even a simple steak with chimichurri sauce would have been more south american than anything I saw in this video. I totally agree with you. They've used in my opinion the stereotypical food eaten by spanish speakers. I am from Spain and I have had empanada like the ones that some of the contestants presented or churros, which I personally consider that are more culturally related to Spain, and not South America. As you said, it's like if for a dish from Canada I did pizza because in Canada they obviously have pizza. And yes, terrible mistake to think that any country in central america is south american. Before the challenge they should've first of all clarify what countries are associated to South America and teach them somehow about the South american cuisine so that their dishes would not lead into confusing plates for south american people cuz canadian people obviously don't have the same concept of south american cuisine as the south americans.

To everyone saying Mexico isn't South America I don't think this was a geography problem, I think it was a problem with lack of culinary experience with South American food. They didn't have a good grasp of what they were doing so Mexican happened.

I'm South American and I'm just wondering if they know what foods are south American because the only ones I see are Mexican(Mexico is actually in North America)and the panacotta....is from Italy,and do they see us all as Mexican because the short answer is that we're not all Mexican
@ivenstorm6 жыл бұрын
Without watching the entire bit.... why are the majority making Mexican dishes? Mexican isn't South American. Empanadas, Ceviche, Chimichuri? It isn't difficult to find out what they can make. Maybe they should be given a couple minutes to actually research before making dishes, and they wouldn't be making mistakes like this.

They are cooking Mexican because South American countries don't have interesting dishes. Argentina and Brazil are famous for barbeque meat and that's pretty much it. When we talk food, it's beyond geography, it's more cultural and historical. No doubt that each county have their traditional authentic dishes, but if they never made it outside their native counties, then nobody won't know them, and in most cases that's for a reason. For example, germans have very very yummy food, but you'll never hear about their dishes and their cuisine. When people say European cuisine, it's Italian or french. When they say asian, it's mostly chinese, not even indian food counts as asian, although it's in Asia. Not saying it's right or wrong, just saying how it is.

Jalapeño is not South American cuisine. Central America is home to hot peppers. This dude is whiter than wonderbread if he equates South American = Mexico and thinks that spicy food is South American. He could have thrown fuckin raisins in his empanada if he wanted to make it South American.
@jaungiga6 жыл бұрын
You are correct. And the more South you go, the less spice you'll find in food. I live in Argentina and I have ended up making my own hot sauces because it's virtually imposible to find anything even decent down here. We do put raisins in our meat empanadas, though... and granulated sugar on top too.
