Abyssal Dwarfs could actually have Barkskin. The lower De the higher chans to succed with the spell. De 2 = 2+, De 3 = 3 and so on. You have to look at amount of dice though.

I was having a look through the spell options. It doesn't seem that great for use on De 6 units. There's another healing spell that could be nice, though.

Would you perhaps have benefited from some Mindscreeches with lightning to force armies like the Ogres to not hang back?

Definitely something to consider. Ogres are able to heal small amounts of damage, but that usually seems to be from Drain Life.
