I didn't even grow up with the original SNES game, it took me years after MK64 to even realize that there was a prequel. But even though I only heard it much later, this track is one of the best in all Nintendo games. Abslutely incredible! Nintendo has a weird way to reserve the best and most underrated bops for odd stuff like extra modes, waiting lobbies etc.

As someone who owns a real copy of SMK, I can confirm that this is exactly the kind of music you'd kick someone's ass to. Once you master the game's loose, slippery controls, you'll be clobbering your opponent - whoever it may be - in minutes if not seconds.

I grew up with this game and battle mode! I played Super Mario Kart and other Super Nintendo games so much when I was younger that I never adjusted to using the Switch's joysticks to control Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, I still just use the D-Pad and the ABXY buttons :D

For me, this music isn't tied to Mario Kart, but to mario_kart. As in, the old Team Fortress 2 map that I spent years playing, and that track brings me memories of spending hours just playing, chatting about everything, from politics to anime to gameplay and weapons, experimenting with different loadouts, and even pick up spy just to mess with the enemy team by pretending to be an engineer from my own team, and see them in chat act all confused when they'd invade what they believed to be a sentry nest, only to see it totally empty. And also, going invisible, and just spamming that song over and over, because few people knew that you could bind a button to "use", you didn't have to shoot it to trigger the music. Ha, the memory of that poor engineer trying to find me... ...and also Touhou. Because I installed a Touhou model pack, so instead of having Soldier blast everyone with a rocket launcher, I had Yuuka Kazami blowing everyone up, while Eirin Yagokoro kept her alive. So many memories. Nowaday all the mario_kart servers I know have closed, and these who remain run on a really weird variant of the map. I wonder what happened to all the people I befriended there.
