The definitive work on the Battle of Bannockburn is that by the author William Scott in his three books, Bannockburn Revealed, Bannockburn Proved and The Genius of Bannockburn. He spent 10 years researching the battle, collating all known contemporary accounts and references, some of he had translated from Latin. He also used General Roy's maps and meticulously investigated the land. The main battle on the second day took place in the Carse of Balqhuiderock, bounded by the Pelstream burn on one side and the Bannockburn on the other. It was a large Scottish army, not a small one, and there was no involvement of Scottish cavalry. The Scots rose early in the morning and quickly deployed down a 60' slope from the Dryfield through Balqhuiderock Wood onto the Carse, sealing off the Carse at its narrowest point, a half-mile gap, to avoid being outflanked. The English, taken by surprise, hastily mounted and charged over a short distance into the assembled, tightly-knit ranks of pikemen. They ground to a halt and their archers, behind them, were ordered to stop firing as they were hitting their own mounted men. Meanwhile the Scottish archers could fire devastatingly at will over their own ranks of pikemen. The static English cavalry were sitting ducks, killed and dragged from their mounts. Edward 2 was led from the field as the Scots advanced. The Scots won by virtue of having a brilliant plan on ground perfectly suited to it. The real story is well worth reading.

A massive advantage was the Scots had weeks to train the troops and choose the best land to defend. He chose the land carefully knowing the English would be hemmed in. They knew the English had to advance towards Stirling Castle, the last castle still in English hands. Bruce was a great tactician and knew that the archers were a threat, he also knew that training the foot soldiers with the pikes could defeat the heavy cavalry.

I'd be interested to see what you come up with regarding the Battle of Duplin moor in 1332. Touted these days by some south of the border as a "rematch", the supporters of King David II of Scotland, the son of King Robert Bruce, were defeated by English-backed invaders supporting Edward Balliol. Balliol briefly titled himself King of Scotland before being driven (allegedly fleeing naked from his bed) back across the border.

Love the vid but more could be made of Bruce splitting Henry de Bohun's head open before the battle. Imagine, you're an infantryman fighting for Bruce, you know you're well outnumbered and about to face one of the most formidable armies in western europe. Your king is lightly armoured and taking in the scene of the battle on a pony, supervising battle positions but not expecting to fight just yet. A young english knight, pumped up for the fight, sees Bruce exposed in front of his army and spots an opportunity for immortality. He spurs his charger right at the King of Scotland. Bruce is on his pony, without armour or serious weapon, having only a small axe, and can easily slip in behind the mass of his troops to avoid the unbalanced confrontation, but he knows his men are watching him. Not wanting to lose face, he keeps his cool while the heavily armoured knight gallops towards him and, at the last moment, he pulls his nimble pony to the side, rises up in his stirrups, and deals a blow to de Bohun so heavy that it splits his head asunder. His men, cheering their king, pass the details of this epic moment up and down the lines. Their courage will see them through to win the battle to come. Great vid, but I just love this particular moment from the battle. The drama is unbelievable and honesty imagine you were fighting for Bruce and witnessed it, you'd be well up for the fight!
