Richard's crown was not on him upon his death, it had been lost during the mounted engagement. After the battle, Stanley had his men search for it, and it was duly found in a rose bush, and retrieved by a lance, as the men felt unworthy of handling it. Stanley himself placed the crown upon Tudor's head, who knelt in tears before him on a small hillock that subsequently became known as Crown Hill. This was done because none of these veterans of the lengthy dynastic Wars of the Roses wished to delay the matter with pomp, ceremony, and circumstance and risk the possible re-ignition of hostilities and civil unrest.

@facehugger3 if I remember, were the remains buried in what appeared to be a shallow depth, considering the historical importance? I seem to remember them having a 360 ° Excavator with its arm directly down, still deep ,but I'm surprised that the burial site had not been disturbed at all , those buildings surrounding the car park and the surface itself were relatively recent...all it would have taken was for a new gas main to be navigated for that area and they are at a level deeper than what is termed " deep drainage " which I remember seeing being laid and the 360° bucket struggled with that? 30ft deep approx, the shuttering was 10ft high plus more...dangerous job for a groundwork gang, lots to go wrong.

Fun fact: the Red Rose of Lancashire and the White Rose of Yorkshire are still widely used to this day, some regiments of the British Army even used it during the first world war, one Regiment adopting the Motto "They win or die, who wear the Rose of Lancaster"
@issimondiasАй бұрын
The Yorkshire Regiment still have a white rose on their cap badge.
@alextowers356427 күн бұрын
Further fun fact: The red rose was only one of many Lancastrian emblems, and the white rose of York did not gain widespread use until later. The romantic idea of a red rose against a white rose, and the term "War/s of the Roses", were a Tudor idea which came after the wars themselves.
@MasterCheeks-255226 күн бұрын
There used to be a York and Lancaster Regiment. I'm supposed they didn't start fighting each other in the trenches.
@mattsnowden532420 күн бұрын
It's romantic, but in reality Henry Tudor fought under the red dragon of Wales and Richard III fought under the white boar. It wasn't until Henry needed a snappy symbol that he decided to adopt the red rose and combine it with the white rose to make the Tudor Rose. Most of Yorkshire itself actually supported Henry, and most of Richard's forces were from houses based in the south. It wasn't until the Battle of Minden that Yorkshire adopted the white rose as its symbol, but that gave the Victorian romantics an easy shorthand to go with and the Wars of the Roses was born.

I’m a little surprised that no mention was made of the use of artillery, as a considerable number of cannon balls have been found in the locality, prompting archaeologists and historians to move the accepted location of the battlefield a little way down the road. The discovery of Richard’s body under a car park, undoubtedly Baldrick’s cunning plan, was a source of great excitement in the city. Many thanks!

I don't think the intelligence of the Stanley's is given enough praise. That move from the Stanley is probably one of the most clever moves in Battle I've ever seen. They see that Richard is about to win, so you'd think they'd join on his side. But instead they save Henry's life, slay Richard, making Henry King and now they can ask for whatever they want. Whereas Richard would probably resent their late opportunist based arrival and what can they gain from it very little, even the celebration afterwards would be a bit awkward.

@jedoakАй бұрын
Just another calculated risk consistent with Richard’s aggressive personality and the equally aggressive conventions of warfare at the time (which were bold assertive maneuvers that seized the initiative and crippled enemy morale). Medieval warfare was often a show of force decided in a short period of time with quick decisive small victories. Richard had the initiative with his superior numbers of considerably higher quality. He needed to let the enemy know that and sending the countercharge reflected his desire to capitalize on the initiative.

Bosworth was not the last significant battle of the so-called Wars of the Roses. The last major battle was Stoke Field, about two years later (1487). The Earl of Lincoln and Viscount Lovell brought a force of Germans and Irish to England and recruited rebel English. In the end their force was not much smaller than Henry's at Bosworth. Stoke Field was a bloody fight with Henry's vanguard (under Oxford) losing for a while until Henry came up with the main army. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Stoke_Field Warspite

The real villain in my opinion in all of this is Stanley. I detest people who change allegiances dependant on how it may benefit them !
@erwanpeeyearee922919 күн бұрын
understandable but as for me, being the Stanley of every situation is preferably a more cunning way to survive from political conflicts. detest as you must, the guy lives to tell the tale.

The only thing missing, is the different historians giving their take on the battle. Like from history channel or something

Thank you! Yes I did, but most of the quality comes from after effects. Consider checking my other depictions of medieval battles :)

It’s easy to imagine what it’s like to die by the sword these days with all the stabbings .. It’s bloody and brutal and a slow death 😔

After this battle the Welsh revolts and uprisings which had been commonplace for around 200 years of English occupation in Wales ceased, some believe its due to the Tudur [Tudor] family being of Welsh origin. Sadly despite Henry wanting to keep England and Wales seperate his son Henry VIII wanted central control so abolished the Welsh naming system and legal system and effectively created "The Kingdom of England and Wales"
