Daniel Davis of the American Battlefield Trust details The Battle of Cowpens of the Revolutionary War. Unable to fully defeat General George Washington's Army in the North, the British shifted their focus to the southern colonies in late 1779, like South Carolina. Shortly thereafter, war ensued.

LTC William Washington? "His most notable victory was at the Battle of Cowpens, where he countered and routed the charge of the enemy cavalry. Washington was awarded a silver medal by Congress for his tremendous service at Cowpens." His battle flag is under the custodial care of the Washington Light Infantry in Charleston, SC.

Excellent video, thanks for making it. One small quibble...I wouldn't characterize the British as having "retreated in a rout" considering the vast majority of the British force was killed, wounded, or captured. You don't get to retreat from a double envelopment.

My 7x Great Grandfather Captain John Files Sr led a company under the 1st Spartan Regiment Militia which was led by Col. John Thomas Jr. in this battle. He was wounded by sword from a British dragoon but he survived.

the version I heard was the militia fired two shots, and intentionally ran in disorder to fool the Brits into pursuit- the terrain allowed the patriots to form in an organised ambush to the rear, including the militia who had baited the Brits, and yes, his cav closed from both sides in a double envelopment.Similar to the Battle of Canne with Hannibal

@@johnresto1603 Nathanael Greene sent Morgan w/ his best troops. It was Nathanael Greene strategy that if he would divide his army so would Cornwallis. It was however Morgan Strategy on the battlefield. It was Nathanael Greene who understood Cornwallis. So I stand by my argument.
@johnresto1603

I understand but and I'm familiar with what Greene did and his strategy. My thing is that the Battle of Cowpens is about Morgan. Greene had nothing to do with the Battle strategy for Cowpens. But Greene had a master overall strategy for the campaign.

@John Resto I am not diminishing the fact that Cowpens was Morgan's victory. All I am saying is no mentioning of Nathanael Greene nor his strategy. It Nathanael Greene that came up with the term "Flying Army".

This is good but not possible to do justice in 4 minutes. I walk it every time life takes me near, 5 times so far. It is really a compact battlefield easily strolled in its entirety in 20 minutes, add 20 for contemplation. The genius of the choice is in the topography. Woods on one side, swamp on the other, and the center of the battlefield is a rise that the Americans held. They could see the British lines as they assembled the British could not see the American main body nor the geography past that rise (assume they had local guides advising on the topography at least). The other thing the Americans did from the outset was target British officers and sergeants.

Wrong on almost every point. Read '...The Last Great Affair Nearly Broke My Heart", a well-researched book on the battle. Just a few of the problems with this You Tube video: the commanding general was Gates, not Morgan. The casualties inflicted on the British were easily replaced; it was a staggering loss because of the quality, not the number. Tarleton escaped; one of only about 10% who were not captured. Gates brilliantly had his front lines 'retreat' around the hill, stop, and then THEY (not the British) returned to double envelope the British. The battle was not so important as its timing; news of the defeat reached Britain just as Parliement began to debate the entire wisdom of continuing the fight.

Another commentator mentioned the correct commander Nathaniel Greene (not Gates) as I mentioned. Greene much under-rated--as was Gates.

Typical of male historians that he did not mention Kate Moore Barry who discovered Tarleton’s route and rode out to warn her husband who was in the militia fighting with Gen. Morgan. Without her advanced warning, Morgan might not have had time to get to Cowpens and ready his troops. The war was fought on the home front as well as the soldiers.

General of the Armies Washington was so tactically inept that he didn't understand the advantages of BG Morgan's alignment. Washington has been quoted as wondering why the regulars weren't in the first line (where they would have been chewed up by the British).

Tarleton, a scion of a British slave trading family, a war criminal at Waxhaws, was a lifelong defender of slavery in Parliament. He was the only British officer not invited to dine with Washington and his officers after Yorktown. His acceptance by British social and political elites remains a stain on British society even today.
