How it came about that the first pogroms against Jews on European soil happened in Al-Andalus of all places. Even more Jews died in Granada than during the Crusades.

@@just-some-muslim Come on mate as Muslims we must despite the Crusaders' shortcomings in some departments, you have to respect their military prowess. All thanks to mostly Norman badasses who inherited the Viking warrior spirit. If only there were also organized military institutions on the Muslims' side that had the same zealous determination as the Crusaders then they wouldn't have had lost against the First Crusade. Despite the Turks being superb warriors, their nomadic culture usually puts emphasis on surviving while inflicting casualties from a safe distance, the zealous Crusaders usually had the advantage on melee fights, and castle warfare. Even to this day, Western culture places great emphasis on "last stands". Remember that sometimes battles are not about numbers, but an army's willpower against the enemy's willpower.

Three miles from the camp, where the road entered a narrow, wooded valley near the village of Dracon, the Turkish army of Kilij Arslan I was waiting. When approaching the valley, the crusaders marched noisily and were immediately subjected to a hail of arrows.[1] Panic set in immediately and within minutes, the army was in full rout back to the camp. Most of the crusaders were slaughtered (upwards of 60,000 by some accounts[4]); however, women, children, and those who surrendered were spared. One of the leaders of the crusade, the knight Walter Sans Avoir, was killed in the thick of the action.[5]Three thousand, including Geoffrey Burel, were able to obtain refuge in an abandoned castle.[1]: 132  Eventually the Byzantines under Constantine Katakalon sailed over and raised the siege;[6] these few thousand returned to Constantinople, the only survivors of the People's Crusade.

It was the height of the Cold War and history education tended to support that America and western culture were a force for good in the world. The uglier aspects of American and western history were glossed over. History education has changed a lot since then.
