That's a myth. You're talking about John Rabe. All he did was report the 20,000 women graped rumor he had heard from WASP missionaries in the area. He would later account in his own biography before his death that he saw no more than two instances of the crime I mentioned. Again, 20,000 is a made up figure. A safety zone was set up in the city of Nanking during the battle in which historical accounts stated that the safety zone was respected by the Japanese and never did they once enter. This is where all civilians fled to. This contradicts the Nanking massacre. The second would be the numbers. CCP claims 300,000 civilians killed. Yet there were only 175,000-200,000 people in the city recorded by the Nanking census, police, and European reporters at the time. And again, all civilians left the city anyway. Thirdly, General Matsui was an avid sinophile. Look into it. His order was no loot, no grape, and no arson in order to keep the city stable. He is the last person to advocate slaughtering Chinese people, he loved them and was in good relation to Chinese politicians

Although there were 150,000 troops, only 80,000 Chinese soldiers actually defended Nanking, excluding support personnel and non-belligerent peripheral forces. Among them, 30,000 temporary recruits were recruited, and the real elite troops were only about 50,000. At least 30,000 of the soldiers in Nanking were successfully evacuated, and about 50,000 soldiers were killed in battle or were collectively executed by the Japanese after surrendering.

Nanking PD census put the population of Nanking in December 1937 at 200,000. So that makes zero sense. Not to mention the nanking safety zone was a thing. Hardly any civilians to kill. It has been stated that the Japanese never once entered the safety zone.

After the fall of Shanghai, most of the troops suffered heavy losses, the fortress defense was weak, there were many defensive blind spots, and internal opinions were divided. Many generals believed that Nanking should be abandoned. Demoralization on the front lines exacerbated the defensive collapse. As some troops retreated, they found their ships damaged by friendly forces and were forced to surrender (most of whom were eventually executed).

This is very different from what's on wikipedia. according to wikipedia the battle was fought in December, not November. Japan had 200k soldiers, not 45k

@@pigeoninanutshell Ben Askew is the one who claimed that only "50,000" japanese participated, he was also the one that said the chinese defending force was less than 70-80k men and the number 150k was highly unlikely. on paper their units should add up to 150k but since many units were 50% understrength or more right after coming back from the battle of shanghai its reasonable to say the chinese defending force was less than 80,000. Look Here: chinajapan.org/articles/15/askew15.148-173.pdf (read the final few pages if you want a summary) according to japanese map of the battle of nanjing here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Battle_of_Nanking_1937.jpg It clearly shown 4 full japanese divisions (6 ,9 ,114, 16) each with all 4 of their regiments attacking nanjing. alongside 2 japanese brigade (2 regiment) sized detachments and a force from the 3rd division. to add up 4 divisions, vanguard of the 3rd division and 2 brigades it should be over 120k. (to make it more confusing, there are more japanese divisions did participate in this battle which arent on the map. the 18th division was also in the battle maybe brigade detachments of the 11th division as well. that should bring it close to 150-175k) In the end it was the chinese who were actually badly outnumbered, the number 50,000 is extremely faulty revisionism produced from Japan's belief that only soldiers who did a banzai charge count as have participated in battle, the rest who were behind providing covering fire, sniping or using artillery dont count.

The KMT troops barely had bolt action rifles. The troops were made up of soldiers fleeing from Shanghai, raw recruits and local civilians pressed into service. They were mostly untrained and new to battle, and lots of them didn't even have a gun, so most of them fled when bullets started flying.

@@AustrianGD its still not appropriate to call things like that a skill issue, and all of the troops in nanjing wasnt even in combat, and lots retreated. they were also underequipped, tired as hell etc. the commanders knew that its best to abandon the city if they wanted to save these troops. they already knew there was no more hope to defend the city. and they alr lost their best resources basically back in shanghai. look i think you have to realize that when theres a huge number of manpower compared to a smaller one and the smaller one won you need to look into the background info rather then "these commanders have a skill issuee!!" for just trying to protect our country, and driving those maniacs out.
