About that matte finish, be careful to only use a very damp soft rag and then dry it with another dry rag. Do. NOT use any guitar cleaning products that say “matte safe” on them. I’m willing to bet that the Debut is has an open pore finish. My friend has a top tier (for Fender ukes) $350ish Fender Dhani Harrison ukulele that I occasionally borrow. As the good friend I am, I wanted to return it all clean and fresh, so I used matte safe Music Nomad cleaner on it. All was good until the next morning when I woke up to my horror and saw thousands of little sparkly looking dots in the teal finish. After talking to Music Nomad (who spoke with someone at Fender) and Sweetwater (where it was purchased), we came to find out that the Dhani Harrison uke has an open pore satin finish, which is very different than a filled closed pore finish (satin or otherwise). That means the cleaner literally sank through or ate through the open pores, which would happen on a closed pore finish that’s filled. So because it didn’t say anywhere on Sweetwater or Fender’s description that it’s an open pore finish and that it needs to be cleaned with just an extremely damp shammy and immediately dried with a second shammy, Sweetwater covered it under their warranty and let my friend trade it for a new ukulele when they came back in stock. But kudos to my friend because she didn’t freak out or get upset at me even before we knew that it could be replaced- she was like, “oh that’s a unique finish. I can be the only person with a sparkly looking uke. Don’t worry, I’ll rock this!” But she ended up trading it for a new one because she was worried the finish would start to peel away, and a relic job on a uke just looks pretty silly at that point! 😂😂😂 But back to your Debut, if you’re looking to relic it, try using some “matte safe” cleaners (or even regular cleaner if you dare!) on it to see if it’s an open pore finish or whether they bothered to fill the pores before applying the satin paint - plus, it might look cool to have millions of dots on your Strat. Just make sure you let it sit overnight like 12 hours after applying cause you won’t likely see the results until then.
@stevecassidyguitarКүн бұрын
Ha! 😂👌 Soz Marsha I shouldn't laugh - that sounds like it was a bit of an ordeal 😬🙈 Such an epic saga commenced just because you innocently and kindly tried to clean your friends uke. Lessons learned though - never clean anything ever again - Just leave everything manky 😜👍

It's my understanding that at this point, the skunk stripe is mostly a skeuomorph. It's a design element harkening to the past that's no longer needed. In the old days of one-piece maple necks, they'd have to carve the truss channel through the back, but once they commonly started using rosewood (as a way to not have fingerboard wear show so prominently), they had the alternative of doing it through the top of the neck piece. But it turned out that since so many people liked the look, in later years, they kept the stripe for the aesthetics. I believe for consistency (in Fender realms at least), the skunk stripe turned out to be pretty standard, but entirely superfluous, and if the guitar is sold for cheaper they'll definitely leave it out. I have some of my Squier Strats with skunk stripes and some without, seemingly depending on their aesthetic sensibilities (or vintage cues) at the time. Heck, I got one Strat-style Starcaster (pretty much the "Debut Series" of its time) that cuts all the corners it can, so it has a maple cap fingerboard over a maple neck with no skunk stripe -- yet I've seen nearly the same model with maple board and included neck stripe, but that's because I honestly suspect they just stole extra parts from other lines currently made in the factory. 😹 Anyway, with all this said: I honestly don't care either way! I suppose it could be argued that a skunk stripe will make a neck stiffer and less prone to twisting, in the way that a multi-piece laminated neck would, but I have no practical data on this.
@stevecassidyguitar17 сағат бұрын
Thanks for sharing this mate - Makes loads of sense 👍 I'd never even paid attention before but it looks like all my Jets don't have the skunk stripe. I've obviously never missed it or bothered if it was there or not 😂

At school we used Squiers as cadavers to work on. Re-fret, Rewire etc. The skunk stripes weren't always carved or sanded properly and you could feel it all the way up and down the neck. I'm enjoying the cyclic nature of that. The Squier has an infinitely preferable headstock though and the combination of that and the Maple fretboard do make make me think that extra £60 might even be worth it. If it'd had black plastics I'd have already bought it instead of wasting time typing youtube comments. I notice how the fanfare around Pacificas lasted about a week and vanished without trace.

It's only a small shop with no more than thirty guitars on the wall. The guy who owns the shop sets everything up first before they go on display and it was a joy to play, and to my ears sounded exactly how a tele should. Personally I’ve never understood why squire beginner guitars aren’t by default HH over SSS, most beginners (myself included) don’t know the difference between the two on the get go, but that horrendous hum that comes from cheap SSS put me off as when you’re learning it’s already hard enough to make it sound nice. Just my opinion. Also 1 vol 2 tone is all that’s needed on a beginner guitar.
@stevecassidyguitar17 сағат бұрын
Did you mean 1 vol 1 tone? Yeah mate - I do get what your saying... But... sometimes I make the mistake of assuming that all beginners are kids, and might not care so much about the tone and happy to rock out with some Humbuckers. But people pick up the guitar at any age, some later in life, some even at retirement age. I've had loads of retired or (near retired) pupils over the years and many over lockdown, where the 60's and 70's was their era. They want to learn, Clapton, Gilmour, Knopfler, Hank Marvin, Hendrix, Status Quo etc... Without the high gain, single coils might not be too noisy. and on an HSS strat, 3 of the 5 positions will be hum cancelling anyway - that's one of the reasons why so many people recommend HSS strats to beginners - I think 🤷♂️
@Mr_Ashley12 сағат бұрын
@ yeah sorry I did mean 1 vol 1 tone. Don’t disagree with you at all, I just know that for me personally I would have been better off with two humbuckers, less controls ( ideally not mile high action ) and just focused on learning to play the instrument, then worry about all the other things you learn about the instrument itself later such as pot sizes, pick ups, pick up location, intonation, string gauge etc etc etc etc.

The Debut is really more like a "No Name" Strat knockoff in overall looks. The Squier Sonic is keeping more in that Squier/Fender tradition with all the appointments you spoke of. @JojoFryrocks Yup! I suggest a black aluminum pickguard for the purple Squier. Aluminum gives the sound some extra "zing" that even the pickups can channel. I haven't put a aluminum pickguard on a Tele yet, but on a Strat where the pickups go into the pickguard, it kinda acts like a aluminum cone from a Resonator guitar and it adds something (both acoustically and in the signal) that was not there before. 😉👍✨

I had that one filmed and 80% edited, but lost the project file when my PC got wiped. So have to start again 😭 Still have the vid files though 😅👍 But I've got around 12-15 vids all at the same stage, might be a while before I can get that one out soz. Still playing mega catch up

@ this comparison is a big deal, spec wise, aside from aesthetics they don’t seem much different but who knows maybe the neck profile is different. I don’t really put that much weight on pickup magnet type after dialing in tone most decent pickups all do the job.

Great review and fair Steve. Keep going either way with the budget/ mid price guitars as they are where most of us will take a punt. Myself I am tempted by a Jet JS400 as after being a Strat avoidance snob for more years than I care to mention, my recently acquired Strat SE has me smitten.
