After finally playing the Saturn version I’m surprised you didn’t mention the wonky controls, it really doesn’t seem to control well at all. In fact I can tell that you were struggling with the controls in the video the same way I was, the car seems to veer off the road very easily and has a lot of snap back. I’ve heard it plays better with the analogue controller but it’s a shame as it looks great. The Taito Memories version, while emulation and visually filtered, plays much better.
@eleanorburns86864 жыл бұрын
Console control was certainly better, but I do think the Spectrum and Amstrad did very well for the hardware. The NES version does look very playable, though. Though the Master System was the console of my childhood, I can't give much credit to the Sega 8-bit versions, alas, as that totally flat road is quite a let down, considering "Out Run" had already shown that the SMS could do better.

It looks like most of the home ports across the board were pretty poor for this all round. I do think you were a bit harsh on the Spectrum version though. Obviously it’s not going to be as good as the console ports, but for what it is, it’s fantastic. And this is from a die hard C64 head.

You should't put computers' control scheme between the cons. Computer joysticks just had one button and all games were like this, that's just the way it was. It's good to warn unaware young players about this, but the judgment shouldn't be: "unplayable because of the control scheme", but more like: "the control scheme takes a while to get accustomed to".
@RetroCore7 жыл бұрын
I see that you ur point but even back in the day I thought computer games had crappy controls compared the the arcades. I hated pushing up to jump, especially on platform games way back in the early 80s. Also, something to keep in mind that Japanese computers of the same time utilised 2 buttons. There was nothing stopping western computers from following suit. Sadly only a small handful of games had 2 button support.

@@RetroCore A significant oversight and lack of care, as this was very possible. The Amstrad CPC actually supports THREE buttons, but nobody ever used them, including Amstrad themselves. I'm totally with you on this one. The Amiga and Amstrad are the biggest casualties in terms of borked controls and low effort ports, due to the Atari ST and Sinclair ZX Spectrum merely existing and being cheaper to buy.

All of this is really a question of context. At the time, European publishers bought game licenses to Japanese manufacturers and give only 2 or 3 months to developers (sometimes less) to create adaptations on many computers, sometimes only with an arcade cabinet to study the original game. In a certain point of view, Amiga, ST, Spectrum or CPC versions are epic works that can't be compared to some of the best Amiga games developed by independent guys in their bedroom during one year and a half. If you add the fact that a lot of the children we were never get in touch with any arcade cabinet, for computer gamers, lot of adaptations were wonderful and we had so good time. I keep fond memories of Chase HQ on my CPC and next on my Amiga. The keyboard keys to play? Up to accelerate? No matter for me, it was the standard 😄 Nowadays, of course, I won't advice new players to discover Chase HQ on these computer versions as it is so simple to play the original arcade game but yes, I have no fear to say I love to play some of those conversions. Maybe someone will think it's sad but for me, Chase HQ on arcade is just a good game. The CPC and Amiga versions, here are all my memories 😁 Did you know that there is a GX-4000 non official conversion of the CPC version patched to be played only with a two button joypad, fire 1 to accelerate and fire 2 to activate turbo? And clearly, this CPC version is just astonishing proportionally to the specs of the Amstrad computer. In the end, thank you for all your videos, Battle Of The Port is an excellent idea and you make a fabulous work each time 😄.

Paul Aiello It took a while for the Amiga to gain traction so most of the arcade ports were actually up ports of the 8-bit or ST versions rather than working on an arcade port from scratch. To be fair their were that many systems kicking around at this point I don’t blame the developers for that.

@@Sut1978 That true and many of the arcade ports ware done in the early days of the Amiga, but I still think many of those ports could have been done a lot better then they ware, in fact some did a remake of those same games for the Amiga and they look and run a lot better. Glad that Saturn version lets you know that the bad guys have functional ears! 👂 It plays like crap, however, and also has wonky controls. For what it's worth, if you're playing the Amiga games on the WinUAE emulator, and you're using a controller with more than one button, you can assign keyboard keys to them. As I recall, you have to select the controller in the Game Ports screen, then go to Input and make sure that Game Ports Panel is NOT selected. Instead edit one of the custom configurations. It's a little bit confusing, but at least you can assign the spacebar or other keys to the extra buttons. Not that it will make this a good game, but at least it makes it easier to play.

However in that case you will need a joystick and to sit by the keyboard on your desk. Those games were not supposed to be played with a joypad. There is absolutely no reason why turning left or right while pushing up would make you slow down when you are using a joystick. Diagonals are far more accurate on a joystick. The ST and the Amiga are computers and not consoles. You are not supposed to play on a large screen from far away but on a 12" - 14" monitor that sits on your desk. That's why most joysticks had suction cups ;). Still I totally agree that support for a second joystick button would have been great (on the ST, I think amiga supports two button joysticks).

Whilst the hardware wasn’t as good as outrun’s I’d say the road in Chase HQ feels more cohesive and real than the road in Outrun. Objects at the side of the road move at the same speed as the road itself, and the hills and dips don’t feel like a ribbon. The audio was generally a lot higher quality (although course the music cannot match Segas amazing songs,)

I must disagree on an important aspect: home computer players are "supposed" to play with the keyboard within reach. Moreover, Spectrum users are often forced to play with only keyboard itself, and while it may seem awkward at first, it works quite well.

Everyone who played on an Amiga, Atari ST, C64, Spectrum, MSDOS or Amstrad were sitting in front of the computer. Before the days of emulation I have never seen anyone playing any of these systems not sitting in front of the machine/keyboard. So the "can't use turbo as I'm not in front of the machine" is a very strange and invalid complaint. That's not how any of these systems were played. Bad control decisions should be pointed out, but the mere fact that some systems only have 1 button joysticks is not the fault of the game developers.

It's right to respect your opinion but i have to disagree with you. The PC Engine version is one of the decent ports that i played which leaved me impressed. It's nice looking, for sure. I think the music is potred well from the arcade. The controls are fine, you have just get the hang of it. To stay on-road, you have to hold the opposite button after you collided with a car: If you get pushed to the right, hold left. While if you get pushed to the left, hold right. The sound effects aren't awful at all, just a bit too noisy. Also this port allows you to ram the criminal's car more than once causing massive damage if you ram it from the side. This version also has an extra sixth and final mission, neither present in the arcade original where you have to face the real big bad of the game, Ben Jordan. But you have to meet one requirement in order to play the sixth mission. See, it isn't awful at all. Let's move to the negative points. The main negative point is it runs too fast. Even when i played the first time, i had a hard time to play due to the game's fast pace. But after a lot of plays, it was no longer a problem for me. The second negative point is the collision detection which it's not awful at all, just wonky: sometimes works fine/as it should be, sometimes... not. Finally the third negative point is the gravity effect which is not a problem, just avoid staying too close to the edges of the road and you should be fine. Honestly saying that this port is awful is a bit exaggerated. Yeah, it's not perfect, but it's *DECENT!* Also another positive point is this version got even an US release which is the version that i play mostly. It has the iconic "Gotcha Nancy!" But unfortunately it hasn't the "Let's go Mr. Driver!"

@iXien4 жыл бұрын
Some people use to say that it's because Amiga only have 4 channels to share musics and SFX. But a lot of Amiga games offer fantastic musics AND sound effects. Amiga really had a powerful audio chip and music or SFX could be so marvelous that developers often just made the choice to play only sweet musics on 4 channels or impressive SFX near to be possible only on Amiga at the time. Here we can think about laziness or time limit during development too.

Retro Core You can clearly see the flickering in the games (and of course there are no scanlines) which makes it appear the same as mame when you connect your PC to the TV using the S-Video output of the graphic card (though modern GFX cards don't have that anymore). To add insult to injury all vertical games don't support Tate mode (O_o) Makes you wonder why you did pay for blatant emulation... If you see the games running on an arcade cabinet they have that distinct ultra sharp scan-lined appearance which is what you get on the Sat (albeit at a price, but alas). The X-Box isn't capable to output 240P (15Khz scanlined output) as far as I know, a friend of mine had modded one with emulators on it, and they all run upscaled and flickering (just the same, at least they were free in that instance) which makes me believe you get the same thing there too. The majority of the games in the collections are available in one form or another (or better, on one system or another) in pure 15Khz scanlined mode, so better get the games separately on those systems (besides, you get to leave the unwanted ones alone ^^)
