This comparison is... a tough one but i'll summarize it. Both the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 and the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive versions have their pros and cons but that doesn't change the fact that Devil's Crush (a.k.a. Devil's Crash [MD], a.k.a Dragon's Fury) is one of the greatest pinball video games ever made!

@@RetroCore Jaki Crush was such a letdown when I got it. When I first discovered it existed I was thrilled at the thought of a Crush game with the Super Famicom's audiovisual power behind it. But aside from a couple of cool elements (theme, ball animation) it just felt limp and kind of uneventful by comparison.

I know this isn't much a secret, but the MD version includes music from other Technosoft games as extras: Herzog Zwei, Thunder Force II, III, Elemental Master and one PC88 game that I don't remember its name. Likely, Naxat wasn't interested on porting it to MD on its own.

@@RetroCore Well, I like what they did with their Technos game conversions for the PC Engine and PC Engine CD. Especially Double Dragon II for the PC Engine CD, which is the best version of the game in my eyes other than the strange music tracks it has, but I replaced that with the real music tracks (that is, the soundtrack disc version of the NES version) and the game turns out to be awesome thay way. I would have liked that version of the game on the Mega CD for example, instead of having to bear with the sloppy Mega Drive conversion of the arcade game. Aside from that, yeah, maybe you are right. It's not like their Sega Saturn efforts are commendable enough anyway.

Considering the fact Naxat only published games in Japan and Mega Drive was not as popular as PC Engine and SNES/SFC in Japan, so it kinda makes sense why Naxat never bothered with Mega Drive. But interesting enough Compile didn't port the game to Mega Drive by themselves.

I humorously like to think of the Genesis version as an HD remake, which is appropriate since most model 1 systems tell you they have high-definition graphics. I've never really been into pinball, so even this one can only hold my attention in short chunks, but it is good(both versions) and the music alone makes it worthwhile. I've been known to listen to each soundtrack for fun and to be energized. And this is a fun situation because you have Compile on one side of things, and Technosoft on the other, two great developers of the day who had similar reputations. Whether or not the MD version is better doesn't take away from the PCE version and Technosoft got to build upon what Compile created. Good stuff on both systems. And I do love the demonic theme.

Scrolling through the comments a bit, I think why some people dislike the MD port is because of... lack of common knowledge apparently. Almost every criticism I see is the "smaller playfield" or "not fullscreen". The MD 320px horizontal resolution is just bigger than the PCE's 256px, but it just uses the same size playfield. I'm surprised some still don't know of that. Just like how most people don't know why arcade games "sound so Genesis".

I remember using mail order directly from Tengen to get Dragon's Fury (it wasn't available anywhere where I lived at the time). Took the usual 6-8 weeks for it to arrive, but what a game. I have no qualms about the TG-16 version, as it's quite good, with some nice touches over the Genesis version. But to me, Tecnosoft took the music to a new level with their mastery of the Genesis sound chip. The visuals are great, the bosses are interesting, the play table is a lot of fun, and the Genesis version of the music just out does the TG-16 version IMO. The cool hidden tunes are a nice extra for the Genesis version as well. In short, it's a great pinball game on all fronts, regardless of which system you play it on. But for me, the Genesis version is the better one.

I played Dragon's Fury on the Genesis many years before ever getting to play Devil's Crush (or Alien Crush either) on the TG-16, so I'm partial to the Genesis port. That said, both are amazing. I really fell in love with Jaki Crush though after finally discovering it a decade and a half or so ago. That's my favorite in the series because I like the graphics and music the most, but Alien Crush and Devil's Crush are great too. I used to really like digital pinball games with some of my other favorites being Epic Pinball and Extreme Pinball for DOS, Hyper 3D Pinball and True Pinball for Saturn, Revenge of the Gator for GB, Pinball of the Dead, and probably plenty I forgot. My grandpa had nothing but ire for video games, but he loved pinball so I loved pinball as a kid. However, I think Pinball of the Dead might be the newest video pinball game I've played. I should really try to get back into them, especially Demon's Tilt that someone mentioned which sounds fun.

Love that this video was made, i discovered the game in late 2020 after i played Alien Crush on the TG16 Mini. So i gave it a try and yeah i loved it then found out about the Genesis port and its just as amazing as it is in its original TG16 incarnation. But to me personally soundtrack wise? The Genesis edges out the TG16 ever so slightly because of that gritty FM synth guitar that the YM2612 excels at along with the stereo separation that as you said, gives it a wider sound stage! But both soundtracks are amazing and really play up to their respective consoles sound hardware capabilities. I can only imagine how the Crush series would sound like had it been done on say disc based consoles.

Video pinball has a two fold coding challenge, one is ball physics, and secondly is collision detection not just in response but visualizing that depth. Usually if the overall collision detection is good the flippers work as expected. Funny to hear about the debate on the ports, me I just want to play both so I'd welcome either one into open arms, damn expensive for a physical copy now heh.

It is true that the PC Engine version is more colorful. But for one aspect, the Mega Drive version is the best, simply for the pixel ratio. The PCE image is overwritten to fill the screen. The sprites aren't bigger than on MD, it's just that the definition is lower ! We had the same show effect with the Super Nintendo. I too in my early 90's college days believed that sprites were bigger on Snes. But in fact it is often because we were "closer", because the definition was lower. The right column of MD information is the added definition of the PCE version. So, we have the table with square pixels, and the real proportions. Of course, the developers at Compile were fine with it when creating the game for PCE. It remains one of the 5 best HuCards of the PCE. For 1990, this game was great. I got my Mega Drive version in early 1993. I had taken one of the biggest 2D slaps of my life. Today I have both. And I will never part with it =) But clearly, the Mega Drive version sounds better, its bonus stages are much better done, and then it is more nervous, and the ball gets stuck less often oddly in the main table.
@RetroCore

@luke_y_444

@@RetroCore Exactly. It's the same table, just the image is overwritten on PC Engine, that's why it takes up the whole screen. Sprites are not bigger on PCE. It's a big misunderstanding and an injustice for the Mega Drive version, which is objectively better.

Excellent vid. Mega Drive/Genesis can only hard-pan FM synthesis sound to go with its single sample channel so it was often tricky in development. Having only four operators in FM (instead of the six on the legendary Yamaha DX7) it is trickier to create hihats and cymbals and satisfying bass drums (with a good kick feel), at least it makes a great source of many natural sounds like wind and splashing waves. In the case of this game the bass drum is so good it feels like it's using the sample channel, one bonus stage BGM plays it so rapidly it increases suspicion, it feels very SunSoft NES/FC in sound too. (Currently making dirty gritty punk music with an FB01 for all audio)

I don’t think the Japanese version has this bug, but on Dragon’s Fury the left outlane’s cover can fling the ball down the drain instead of blocking it. This often ends my game and it’s pretty disappointing. I do like the Genesis version quite a bit other than that, but that glitch sends me running back to PCE.

I played these both for the first time one after the other, and for my part the Genesis version edges out the PCE one, mostly on the strength of the bonus stages and music, both of which I felt were better there. To be fair, the latter may be due to my greater familiarity with the Genesis sound, having grown up with one. I’ve also noticed that the PCE version, like many PCE games, sorta seems to have been designed for square pixels, which is weird since the PCE didn’t output any 4:3 resolutions. A lot of PCE games just look slightly stretched at 4:3.

Interesting comparison. I've heard from so many people that the PC Engine of the game is the superior version, but to be honest I don't think there's enough to justify that claim. Sure, it has better animation in some parts, but the Mega Drive port plays every bit as smoothly, and has extra content not found in the PC Engine original. The only real annoyance is Technosoft's sound engine not allowing for music and samples at the same time, but the music sounds so amazing I'm willing to overlook that. Seriously, Technosoft made the best FM drums on the system, it's hard to believe they aren't sampled! Speaking of which, did you use emulation for the Mega Drive port, or do you just have a different revision from my VA6 Genesis? The PSG sounds louder than on my system.

I was using real hardware for both games :) The PC Engine is a RGB moded Core Grafix II while the Mega Drive is an early V1 model with a daughter board added to the main board for the crystal. It really is a very early model.

Amazing how Compile designed this game but got very little credit for it, with all of the kudos going to Naxat instead. I'm partial to the Genesis version myself, because you know, that's the system I had growing up, and it wasn't worth it to buy a TurboGrafx just to get the "superior" version, when the differences aren't exactly vast. What I find amusing is that after porting Devil's Crush to the Genesis, Technosoft made its own pinball game, Fantasic (sic) Pinball for the Sega Saturn. It was okay, but it was no Devil's Crush. What I don't find amusing is the crummy western-made sequel to Devil's Crush called Dragon's Revenge. Grungy graphics, weaker ball physics, less inspired level designs... yeech. Just... stop it before you hurt yourself, Tengen.

Naxat are one of those companies than make pretty average to crappy games. Anything really good under their name was not developed by them. Devil Crash being a main example. Poor Compile, they were more talented than most of the surviving Japanese game studios of the 80s and 90s.

I bought this at the time for the Genesis. I thought having the monsters wander around made play frustrating rather than challenging, and I didn't like the way you could get a blocker at the bottom of the table to stop you from losing the ball. I also thought the ball felt a bit too heavy, and I preferred Psycho Pinball for the Megadrive. Actually, I liked Pinball Dreams and Pinball Fantasies on the Amiga even though the ball felt like a table-tennis ball on those games! Looks as though I'm in the minority for not liking this game!

PCE version has more colors on the main board (enemies, object, small details is more color). MD version has better looking bonus areas (some of the them are outright gorgeous!!). MD one is a little weird using most of the same main board graphic assets, but having them display skinnier than they should be. Though it's only really noticeable when you put them side by side. I also like the sound track on both. Out of all the PCE models I own, this game sounds best on the Duo-RX model (it's more bass-y and fuller). Even though it's not the same game, you should have shown the SNES Jacki Crush or whatever.

@@NotaPizzaGRL The PCE game uses the PCE's 256px horizontal res. The MD version uses 320px horizontal res. They kept the same 256px wide playfield but since it's a higher res, that had some room for a border on the right. So while not the same screen 'area', it is the same pixel area - just squished a somewhat bit (actually, by 25%). There's a benefit on the MD for running 320px res VS its low 256px res.. you get more sprites on screen (80 vs 64) and you get more sprites per scanline (20 vs 64). I guess Tecnosoft thought it was worth the trade off to have a squished playfield, but more flexible sprite setup.

Nice video. I played Devil's Crush, but I own the American release for the Genesis (Dragon's Fury). I like both versions though I like the TG-16 version's lack of a sidebar a bit better. Hilariously, Tengen (who released Fury in the US) put out a "sequel" called Dragon's Revenge...similar atrocious cover to the American Fury, but the game was nothing like Fury.
