What I love about the 8bit and 16bit era is that if it was a game like Chase HQ that you loved in the Arcades. Even if you had a bad port of it you would still play it because that's what you had. Story goes that one of the options Sega had when working on the MD was to include sprite scaling hardware, which would have made a lot of sense given the arcade scene at the time. But Sega pulled back due to cost. Imagine the difference it would have made if Sega had bitten the bullet and paid for the extra hardware.
@dreamcastfanАй бұрын
That would have been so awesome if we could have had super scaler games in the home. The 32X was very good at it, but sadly I think we only got Space Harrier and Afterburner that used it.
@axilmar254Ай бұрын
That SEGA, which triumphed in the arcades due to sprite scaling, decided not to include sprite scaling in their console, is one of the stupidest decisions ever in the videogame business. If they wanted their console to be cheap, they could have offered an addon for sprite scaling right from the start. But I don't believe people wouldn't buy the console if it had sprite scaling from the start, even if it was more expensive. Imagine the shock value where one could play the hottest arcade games (Space Harrier, Afterburner, Outrun etc) at home in a quality similar to the arcade! Is there a single person that wouldn't want to buy it? I don't think there would be...
@NoSpamForYouАй бұрын
They could have stepped up and gone with a faster MC68000 or MC68010 and a bit more VRAM. Jaguar XJ220 on Sega CD is doing software sprite scaling on the 12Mhz M68000 of the cd unit. Sarah Jane Avory (SoulStar programmer) thought it would be slightly better than the sprite scaling ASIC but it was just slightly behind after some latency that added up. If they had also done the color decoder bypass chip used in system-16 and system c2 (I think both use the same or similar VDP as Genesis) it would have had near Neo Geo level color options too. Even if they just added a bit of Color Ram for 2 or 4 more 15-color palettes, it would have taken the Genesis to a new level. If they did that, they never would have even thought about the CD or 32x and they might be making consoles to this day.
@PhilBaxterАй бұрын
@@axilmar254 Retail price is a massive factor in console success. SNK tried selling a high end arcade perfect console in the NeoGeo and it was a disaster. I think Sega probably did the right thing, it resulted in them winning the console war in the US and doing extremely well in Europe too.
@axilmar254Ай бұрын
@@PhilBaxter We are not talking about the Megadrive having the same superscaler capabilities of Outrun (although both are based on System 16). We are talking some basic sprite scaling that would allow for decent conversions of SEGA's major games. The Genesis was released at 189$ if I recall correctly, right? with some sprite scaling circuit built into its sprite engine, it would be 199$. Not a major difference in price, but a major difference in function. SEGA struggled to match Nintendo sales in the years around 1990. With sprite scaling, they would easily match Nintendo's success, or even surpass it. Not only that, but sprite scaling would make 3d games actually cheaper, because they would need much less memory. They wouldn't need to store a lot of versions of the same graphic, only some versions, the rest would be scaled on the fly. Imagine the magazine reviews at the time...the Genesis would do what Nintendo couldn't do. Not having sprite scaling in their machine was one of the stupidest mistakes in video game history.

@Bloodreign1Ай бұрын
@@danmoney9932 The 32 bit consoles could do basic emulation, like the Midway packs that had the early arcades games courtesy of Digital Eclipse, but everything else put out on the 32 bit consoles were straight ports, emulation wouldn't be more of a thing till the next generation of consoles (PS2, DC, etc). This game, if it appeared on the Saturn, would have to be a port, with maybe some extra options thrown in for the home console consumer.

I actually quite like the Super Famicom game, it’s not perfect but I think it does have a nice look to it and would be quite fun if not for the time limit being too tight. It does have a hidden 6th level (which I think is only in the Japanese version for some reason) after the end credits where you have to deliver an organ for transplant. The arcade version is definitely the one to play though, it’s such a shame it never got a Saturn port, it could have been a perfect port there.

Wow. The SNES and MD ports are pretty lacking for once. Out of the two ports though, I easily would prefer to the Mega Drive port though. I honestly LOATHE the cockpit view in most racing games (save for a select few like Rad Mobile, Vroom!, and probably the arcade game should I try it; there’s a lot going on that looks quite entertaining), because as you said, the chase view is so much easier to manage and see where you’re going.
@Bloodreign1Ай бұрын
Both games are quite awful, and last time I looked on Ebay for Chase HQ/Super HQ for Gen/MD, the game was selling for well over $100, $200 for a boxed copy (Japanese version). Cart only for the US version is around $50, boxed, over $100. The Genesis version is just as troublesome to control as the SNES game, and the music on it is quite forgettable (not sure if you ever played the game, honestly this series needs a wheel peripheral to enjoy any kind of decent control for the games). It's also not worth the money it sells for. The cost is why the Genesis version is not in my collection (I didn't go the Growl and Cadash route, getting both just in time before their price explosion), the SNES version is cheap as dirt, and I had no trouble ever finding it when I hunted retro games locally on the regular. Never saw one copy of Chase HQ II Gen locally.
