Battle of the Suhr JM Pros! - Tone Junkie TV

H.W. is joined by Jon and "the Sooze" as we find out which Suhr JM Pro will rule them all! It's the familiar Gold JM Pro with Suhr S90 and a Gotoh 510 vs the black SSV humbucker JM Pro with a hardtail bridge. Great video, guys! Agreed with Jon, the P90; overall cuts through a tad nicer; the P90 variant was more airy sounding, and that high-end snap is definitely more pronounced - overall a bit more character. I’m digging it!

One feature not mentioned here regarding the JM Pro with the S90's ..... this guitar includes Suhr's Active Noiseless system. It's active (battery powered w/access on the back) as opposed to a passive system due to the S90's higher output.

I’ve owned both; they are quite different. Vintage JM pickups (and modern reissues) are not much like Suhr’s P90s. JM pickups are high-fi, bright, clear and open. They don’t have the low mids or the mid-range growl of a P90 like the Suhr. Both kinds of pickups are great, but the Suhr S90 isn’t really trying to sound like a classic JM at all-it’s trying to modernize the classic P90 like those found in Gibsons, etc.

Does the TP6 tune o matic bridge result in any decreases in snap, pop, spank, etc. compared to the 510 tremolo? Theoretically, the trem option should have a relatively thinner sound jn comparison, which could give the perception of a snappier tone, but if the snap and spank is no different and the TP6 bridge just delivers a slightly more full sound without coming off as slightly more mush/spongy, then that answers my question and could potentially end my quest in my search for the ideal P90 platform.

This video demo takes time to enjoy these guitars, whilst most other demos of the JM pro seem to get it over and done with, as maybe a poor Suhr relation. My choice would be Trem, bridge Thornbucker with coil tap, neck S90 ???

Great comparison. I like the S90 with trem. Gonna be tough to find one left handed. Jerry's lefty guitar shop has six of these. None are S90 w trem.

I ended up getting Suhr's sss strat in Sonic Blue. It spoke to me more than the jm's. Now i'm trying to learn that intro yall's was noodling around with!!!!

James Fischer No, Suhr guitars are so well built and set up that tuning on the trem models tuning is super stable. In terms of sustain, we didn't really notice a difference.

how do the necks feel thickness wise? say, relative to a modern C shape?

A little fatter, but they're extremely fast even with the wider frets and slightly bigger neck.

It's hard to quantify mojo, but these things do feel pretty alive. I have played some really expensive stuff, mostly super strats, that just feel lifeless but I didn't find that to be the case with these.

I would think these would be more likely to have mojo on two counts: 1) Suhr vs Fender, C'mon! That's like comparing blue vein cheese with processed cheese slices! 2) P90's have so much character, whereas JMP90'S...You never hear of anyone modding their guitar to put JMP90'S in, right??! Whereas P90's, they're probably the most desired pickup right now, especially for bedroom players who aren't using high volume/gain. ... therefore..your query seems almost rhetorical 🙂

Hey Earl, Looks like we forgot to mention the signal chain. Both guitars were running into an OCD first and then later a tube screamer for thew dirty parts, then into a big sky with a light hall verb and a pretty light tape delay courtesy of a Strymon Big Sky. Amp was Kemper set to a /13 JRT Profile.

You're hearing the output of the Kemper directly into the the Reaper (DAW) software I use to record the audio.
