On June 18-20, 2015, thousands of reenactors gathered at Waterloo to commemorate the bicentenary of one of the most important battles in European history. The battle took place on June 18, 1815, and the Allied forces under the Duke of Wellington defeated the French army under Napoleon Bonaparte.

True, just wish they had proper soldiers re-enacting this like in the the Waterloo movie. 16,000 soviet conscripts taught how to drill, march, play music and shoot for the battle of Waterloo. Would have been a far more inspiring sight than seeing middle aged men with no combat experience and no discipline walking down a hill shooting muskets. No disrespect to them intended but it's like watching amateurs soldiers vs real soldiers.

@@Scottx125Productions u won't believe me but soldiers back then were not so 'disciplined' they were trained but they had they were lowzey because of the equipment they had to carry for days. And Soviets weren't a thing in 1815.

I wish I could've been there for the 200th anniversary re-enactment. I recently visited the site and it is an excellent museum & battlefield site. Battle of Waterloo holds a fascinating place for me in military history. Highly polarizing figure in his time but Napoleon was a brilliant general/tactician of his day. How many political leaders today have front line military experience? Nevertheless Napoleon had some disastrous military campaigns such as Egypt (where he abandoned his army) and Russia (which pretty much ended his string of victories). Still a fascinating historical figure. He was born Corsican & not from a noble or very wealthy family and rose to become emperor of France.

Indeed, he was born Corsican, and on the same year that France took possession of the island from Genoa. Napoleon's family had Genoese and Tuscan origins, generally modest roots although the Buonapartes were minor Italian nobility. In his earlier years Napoleon was part of the Corsican independence movement which resisted French rule. It is astounding that someone with his background would grow up to become the emperor of France, never mind that he would conquer most of Europe.

I belive there were little or no casualties in this particular re-enactment as it was dangerous to lie down with so many cavalrymen around. For normal small re-enactments different groups do it differently. Some just die when they want, others have officers who decide for them, and others have a list of casualties and you just go one by one from the list. There is no unified way world wide.

I'm not sure if they're Swedish (although that was my first assumption too). I've never come across any Swedish regiments that took part during Waterloo. They're likely to be Hanoverian infantry since they're wearing the correct colours and also have a predominantly yellow flag. Although the type of uniform they're wearing is very hard to get a reference image for - i'd like to know where they got the information to be able to make the actual thing!

Someone who does reenactment, enlighten me: I know the idea is to stage historical battles, but how does one handle stuff like casualties? Do soldiers predetermine when their deaths happen? Is it more like the honour system where you lie down dead when you think you would have be killed?
@Goober651
@Goober651 Жыл бұрын
It really depends on the type of reenactment. Something like this is where the common soldier would just die when they want to, like if their rifle isn't working or they're just tired. An officer would generally be told when to die. Other reenactments may have it where a month is called out, and whoever is born in that month dies during the next volley. Brandon F. made an excellent video, explaining it.

why must they place music in a battle reenactment...strange. This is also before smokeless gunpowder. Would have been better with some narration.

At the original reenactment they had music and some narration. Having the music was unusual to us, having been mostly to Civil War reenactments in the US. The music on this clip was added by us.

Until watching this video, I never grasped just how much black powder smoke hangs in the air. I always thought descriptions of it were exaggerated for dramatic effect, but.... well, there's no denying it.
