Battle Report! Ep. 3 - Ambush - Warhammer Fantasy, 5th Edition

In our third battle report, we dive into the Ambush scenario from the WHFB 5th edition Battle Book. As the beleaguered forces of the Empire march to join forces with a friendly High Elf patrol, they are ambushed on both sides by a force of Dark Elves and their Goblin allies.

Great battle. Note that the High Elves archers cannot shoot on the turn they rally as rallying is considered a reform maneuver. Heroes, wizards and generals do indeed count their VP separately (in addition to any category bonus). For example, if you killed the enemy BSB, you would get 1 VP per 100 pts of the character (including the cost of his items, like if he took a magical standard) as well as 2 VP if you held the BSB's standard. Likewise, you would get the general's VP for point cost as well as +1 VP for the general being a general. There was never a solid answer about how to award VP for squig hoppers... the game designers recommended 1 VP for every 3 squig hoppers, but it wasn't an official ruling per se.

My memory may be a bit off since I haven't played 5th in over 20 years. But I believe the banner of defiance at 32:46 would have only given a total of 4 rank bonuses. Only the ranks behind the first count as bonuses, and there were only two ranks after the casualties. Keep up the good work.

Hi, Phil! Thanks for watching. I checked the rules, and rank bonus is calculated on ranks of 4+ models after the first rank, but before casualties incurred that round are removed. So I think I got it right. Those poor spearmen needed every bit of it to hold out against those hungry Cold Ones!
