@@Gameboygenius Bhutanese architecture is pretty recognizable. Especially gentle-sloped, overhanging roofs are common throughout the entire country. The older buildings usually have a combination of wood (pillars) and (white) stone walls as a base, almost like how Austrian houses are constructed. Also the entire country is extremely mountainous and it rains a lot (except in this shot, which was fairly dry for a Bhutan round).

Only last piece of advice which you seem to have missed on the Czech Republic round. You guessed to the east and was something like 48 miles away then guessed to the west of the country and was 43 miles away. Therefore meaning that because your second guess was around 100 miles away from the first yet only 43 from the nearest person so their closer guess must’ve been in the middle of your two guesses hence why the middle of the country wouldve been the best thing to guess. Thumbs up so he sees :)

@Legpierna

I mean, it wouldn't really be bound to just the middle of the country, more like a line bisecting the previous two guesses if you think about it. But he still should've guessed in the middle haha.
@MrMatom55
@MrMatom55 3 жыл бұрын
@@Legpierna Basically, you go in the middle of a line connecting the two guesses (bit more east, because Tom's second guess, which was more eastern, was closer), but vertically it might be bit more north or south than the exact point in the middle of the line connecting his first and second guess.
@DixonD
@DixonD 3 жыл бұрын
Imagine a huge circle where the target location is in the center. So if you make two guesses close to the border of the circle and the other person guesses on the opposite side of the circle, your guesses might be quite close to each other but very far away to the target location :)
@Legpierna
@Legpierna 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrMatom55 yep, thats what I meant. The original comment suggested that since the two guesses were opposite to each other and around the same distance from the actual answer, that the spot was always going to be in the middle of it. But like you said, the actual place could be way further up or down on the map while still being around the same distance from both points as long as its between them in lattitude.

I love this Battle Royale so much more than the country one. The country one is way too quick, especially when you get to higher divisions where you have to get the country within 5-10 seconds to have a chance. This one rewards thinking, logic and exploring a lot more, and it's so rewarding when you manage to get a 'perfect' round for the whole lobby to see! Hopefully they'll expand it with more locations/maps in the future.

Usually if the street sign (speed limit etc.) is on one side, it's on the side where you drive. So seeing the frontside of a sign on the right but none on the left usually means we're driving on the right. There might be some signs that are on the both sides and countries which use a different system, but this is the norm.

Step by step he's learning to use the information presented by the game and the rounds become so much more enjoyable to watch, I just think that in rounds where you don't really have anything to go by, like that last round in a museum, just click around without wasting time! You have so many guesses left (and, of course, there's the 5 second timer between them), that you can afford to just click around and hope for the best.

Unique cyrillic letters per language. At least for the slavic ones. Things like Mongolia, Kazakhstan etc. would have other givaways besides the language. Bulgarian - ъъ, while it does exist in russian it's extremly rare to see it there. Never in other languages. In Bulgaria we have road signs written in latin too, especially on major roads and at city/town entrances, villages might be in bulgarian only. There are a lot of store signs and such in latin, but those are usually brand names. You wouldn't see a sign with an entire sentence written in latin alphabet(except if it's in english side by side with bulgarian on some tourist spot). Russian - Ё ё, Ы ы, Э э are all very common and specific to russian - Ы ы in particular is a common word ending. Ukrainian - Ґ ґ(watch for the top bit going up, it's different to the normal Г г - that is in every language), Ї ї - both are only in ukrainian. Thre's also an І і, that can be seen in in belarusian too, but as Belarus is not often on Geoguesser, Ukraine is a safe bet. Belarusian - Ўў - as mentioned Belarus is not on, but this one is unique. Serbian - Serbia also uses latin - the further north, the more of it, cyrillic is seen more often in the south. If you see a mixture of both(and the latin is not just brand names or english translation as in Bulgaria), it's most likely Serbia(or Montenegro). The unique letters to look for in serbian cyrillic are Ћ ћ and Ђ ђ(again could be Montenegro). Macedonian - Ѓ ѓ and Ќ ќ no other language has those.

Some tips for folks looking to use the distance tool to score better in this mode. I'm pretty sheit at Geoguessr normally but in this distance BR I'm at 15 wins out of 35. The key is understanding that the distances refer to a point on a circle around the actual target. A second guess then alters the distance by a certain amount, you gotta get a feel for what sort of changes imply what sort of geometry. As a rule of thumb if you see no change make the same distance guess in exactly the opposite direction. This mostly all works if its a tough round that few people would guess very accurately, or if you're in the last round zoomed in far already and trying to pepper the possible region with guesses. If you're quite sure you're somewhere in France in the last around and you got like 10 guesses, spend them all. No use saving guesses for next game. Additionally, a first guess if you just know it is a certain country is typically best put centre-mass of the road network. If 90% of a country's roads are in the north pick a road in the middle of the northen cluster and only look south if you have very distinct clues, or if the miles you're off by first looks to be too big to account for the east and west alternatives within that region.

It's something he can practice on paper and simulate to get a better grasp of. It's pure geometry and linear algebra. Very simple stuff. Makes the game way more about using math than geography after the initial guess. I honestly don't like that although it gives people like me an advantage :/

@@SiMeGamer It will still only get you so far against great players, in a tough contest it ends up being a tool for picking between two cities in a region that you know tend to look quite similar, but instinct still reigns as the more important skill to have. For Tom he is giving himself a big handicap by not using up all his guesses in the later rounds, and by not guessing early enough to have time for a second and third guess in some others.
@SiMeGamer

@@PMundi there are methods in the round before last to use a guess that is between two people and two more guesses in order to get an exact location using only the two numbers. I'm just saying that it's not very interesting since that makes this a pure mathematical skill. Yes, without any knowledge of geography (like me) you won't get very far, but if you can get good enough at geography to land in a relatively close area, you'll win almost every time if you have 2 guesses to spare. I just prefer how Tom does it in his fan photo videos where using what he has with no number information that doesn't make sense in a real situation. I get that this is a game and it's for fun and that mechanic seems fine, but I prefer a more pure version of the game where you are given a location and you have to use it as best you can to make a good guess. Perhaps that requires a little extra time per round. Idk. I just love Tom for his geography skills. I can look for math skills literally anywhere else. Perhaps it's just a personal pet peave (is that how you spell that?).

Good job reading the comments and learning from it! Much better now. Good luck! Just one thing - don't wait until someone else guesses, there's no point to it (it's not like the country battle). It's actually much better to guess as early as possible, to give yourself more time to correct your guesses before the timer runs out. And in the last round you needed to litter all your guesses all around the most likely places, since you can't get a precise location and your timer is running out pretty quickly (instead of waiting).

tom, when you’re in the final rounds and you’ve identified the general area you’re in, you should just start littering the map with guesses. don’t worry about waiting for the opponent to guess
@juliusgrnager6241
@juliusgrnager6241 3 жыл бұрын
What? Might be a bit effective in very specific situations, but maybe I’m not sure what you mean. It’s rare that he has an rough estimate and is 100% sure he’s in the right continent/country(especially NMPZ). If you litter the map before your opponent guesses, you can’t use your opponent’s guess to help you, because you don’t know which guess is closest. So this tactic is only really effective after one opponent makes a guess. In which case the advice should rather be: Guess a bit faster (you can only guess so many times because of the countdown each time you guess). But maybe I’m just confused. Could you give an example from one of his games, where he could have used it?

@@juliusgrnager6241 in the czechia round (17:10), he makes a guess and discovers that he’s 39 miles from his opponent. with so many guesses remaining, he should just make a diamond around his original guess to cover as much ground as possible edit: granted, in that round, time was limited, so perhaps a triangle would suffice, but the principle still applies

Ok. He had one guess remaining and chose to guess somewhere in Poland which, indeed, was stupid. As he himself said. And he corrected himself after knowing that it’s probably better to just make a random guess in the middle of the country. So given that this is the only example from the video (maybe more?), I’m still left a bit confused. And he did guess every time the five second count-down was down. My point is just that I don’t see a situation where a fast non-thought out guess would make any sense. You wanna always use the information given to tune your guess. Might still be wrong. But I understand that the viewers may be “annoyed”(not annoyed but u know what I mean) whenever he guesses somewhere stupid. But I just don’t think his geometry skills are _that_ fast and well thought out right now.

@@juliusgrnager6241 yeah, i get that, but at the same time, there are many rounds in which you’re unable to determine precisely where you are - like the side of the country you’re on. those are the rounds where it would be most beneficial to just start clicking mindlessly

7:13 the person who was knocked to last place after your guess had 0 guesses so he could not have made it back in so the game ended instantly. I've noticed a bug early on when distance battle was introduced, that sometimes if you were last, guessed again, remained in last but the number of your lives went down to (2^n)-1 (where n is a natural number) (so 1,3,7), the game could end instantly. I suspected this could be because of how numbers are stored as binaries, since for example the 8->7 jump is 1000->0111 in binary, 4->3 is 100->011 and 2->1 is 10->01, so if for some reason not all digits changed at the same time, it's possible 1000 changes into 0000 before any of the original 0s flip to 1s, meaning the server sees your lives as 0. We learned plenty about this as different logical gate errors, never seen it happen in this way, but idk.

@@krytolandros1775 Good question. I would emphasize this strategy in low-info maps. In the last rounds you can make a set number of guesses due to the cooldown between guesses. If you have 12 guesses reserved, you waste guesses for every 5 seconds you wait for more information. There is the risk that you might not know which guess is closest, but depending on how little information there is, it wouldn't hurt to put those guesses out. Your first guess would be general ball-park, and subsequent guesses could narrow down like areas nearby. If you only have one location guessed and wait for the opponent, you assume that your next guess is in the right direction anyways.
@Nappse
