More Insane Guesses on Geoguessr's Hardest Format (but cruel scores)

Last week, after some time out from this format, I somehow managed a whopping score of 23,741, along with a host of insane guesses. I knew that that pressure free form wouldn't continue though, and sure enough I performed worse in my next session. None the less, here are the highlights.

About the Italy one at 6:15: The region Trentino-Alto Adige is influenced by Mediterranean weather. Those are some valleys with a lot of sun and wind, which is why there is not much rain. The town Merano has southern climate and palm trees as well. On the other hand, just across the border in Austria and Switzerland, the climate is very different because some mountain ranges of the Alps divide the weather. In fact the valleys are narrower which leads to less wind, more clouds, colder weather. So a different valley = different climate. Common thing in the Alps. ;)

Well I think altitude has a lot to do with it, it's not just the mountain "dividing" the weather, but the fact that at higher altitudes you have colder climates .. as simple as that, the Mediterranean probably does play an effect, but not as much as altitude

A bit of a trade secret here, but we use it all the time in the realm of visual effects and video game dev. When you are doing your Geo detective work, you aught to consider cross referencing with Bing Maps 3d view.

The south side of the alps is indeed warmer than the north side. Tall mountain ranges to the north can help block northern winds. However, there are parts of southern Switzerland, like Lugano and Locerno that share climate and general vegetation "feeling" with Northern Italy. It's also worth keeping in mind that most of Switzerland is at a few hundred meters in altitude, even in the bottom of their valleys. Bern for example is at 500m altitude, and so is Sion. Meanwhile Bolzano, quite far up the italian alps, sits at only 250m in altitude. The decrease in temperature with altitude varies a lot but is on average about 0.6'C for every 100m. The 250m altitude difference would equate to about 1.5'C in difference, which is the same difference as between Bergen, Norway and Birmingham, England.

Yea, that Spain guess, that turned out to be Sarinia, was actually an advert kicking in for a place called Listerine.

14:38 We use to have rear yellow numberplates in France, changed to white plates about 10 years ago but there's still a few yellow ones (if no owner change has happened since 2011)

14:26 FYI about yellow license plate in France: Before 2009, a car had a white license plate on the front and a yellow plate on the back. (Their re-registration must legally have taken place before December 31, 2020.) So on Google Street View, if the photos that are not very recent, French cars may still have a yellow one on the back.

You have to improve your Brazilian rounds knowledge. Maybe trying a perfect score in Brazil? I would love it. I would even make the Portuguese subtitles for the videos

The one that looked like Switzerland is South Tyrol, a part of Italy that used to belong to Austria before WW2. It is easily recongnizable by the apple trees, the warm climate and mountains. Whenever you see those three combined its South Tyrol, I got family over there. Cheers

Hey just a quick little tip from somebody who lives in Calgary Typically, your east coast houses are gonna be a bit more colourful and a lot less plastic, with less space in between them unless it’s rural A classic western suburb was the round you had at around ~6:00 because they houses were made of cheap plastic, there was lots of space in between them, and it looked very prairie-like Obviously I grew up here so I have the advantage, but just keep that in mind to avoid some of those gnarly “Got Canada correct but I was somehow 4000km away” rounds Cheers

That PA round can't have been more than 10 or 20 miles from where I grew up. Couldn't tell exactly where the marker was and didn't guess that, but happy to see my 'hometown round'.
