The paperclip being a norwegian invention is actually a myth. Sure, Johan Vaaler did invent a design for a paperclip in 1901, however the modern paperclip (nicknamed "gem") was already in use by the British in the late 1800's. Johan's design was also more square and less useful than the "gem" design.

Worst part of this whole thing is that there WERE actual women in the Norwegian resistance, but instead of telling their story, or that of female russian snipers, they decide to tell this garbage, minimizing the achievement of the men who actually did destroy the german heavy water opperation. Instead of telling the story of women who actually fought, they write men out of their own history.

There is not a finite amount of 'attention' that can be paid to the sacrifices of warfighting men and women. A high octane shoot-em-up level in a video game does not prevent you or anyone else from reading a book or watching a documentary about adjacent topics. No one has been written out of their own history. Books have not been burned, footage has not been overwritten. It's out there. Go look for it. I think what's happening is that you just found a convenient excuse to get mad that women are in your videogames making entertainment out of historical conflicts. Sincerely, A veteran, a gamer, a history buff, and a man.

What do you mean? That the war story should present Operation Gunnerside instead? Yeah it would probably be better, However, That operation is known for that no single shot was fired. It would be a short and a boring war story for people who want to shoot and blow some nazis up. If Dice did that it would be an direct insult towards the real heroes. They would have to be spot on with their appearance, personality and every single step they took. I don't think Dice or any studio could do that. I don't think this story simply replaces the real heroes. I think Nordlys warstory takes place just before Operation gunnerside, a prequel. It's better that they added a fictional story about someone who simply fought against the nazis.

@@pabloguzman9556 Maybe I don't like real history in games. Ah I love it when people like you get these random accusations out of their imagination bank. I don't agree with the story of these two female resistance fighters switching out the real soldiers who blew up the heavy water factory, If would be better if they had their own story that was not part of that factory. I don't either support the campaign since it is full of inaccurate events. Most people haven't even played the war stories. There are more multiplayer related trophies that have been unlocked than war stories trophies. People appreciate the ww2 setting, sure, but they care more about the multiplayer. Battlefield has always had more focus on multiplayer. There are way more multiplayer trophies that are unlocked than war story related trophies. on bf1 on ps4, only 13.7% of players have finished the campaign. On bfv on ps4 as well, only 7.1% have finished the campaign according to the trophies. There are only small numbers of players who care more about the campaign. They could feature a cast of characters who were part of a real battalion, like the female Russian snipers as previous commenter mentioned, I agree that would have been better. But it will never be historically accurate in video games. None of the characters in bfv and what they did are true, neither in bf1, the only real person they included in bf1 was Lawrence of Arabia. He only talked during cutscenes while you controlled his companion that likely never existed. Most ww2 games have a cast of fictional characters and fictional missions INCLUDING THE WAR STORIES. Historically accurate events are more heavily focused on films and tv-shows. But not in games, certain missions like D-day sure. but it will never be historically accurate featuring real heroes. If you want that, you're better off watching a documentary. At least Dice did the correct thing that codww2 didnt, which was to not add black characters in the german faction.

@Reunite The British Empire I assume you want to Make History Great Again? Well tough luck, EA ain't gonna change shit. Yes, it's inaccurate, but crying about it and calling someone a shitbird just because they told you this was a video game (it is by the way) and called *you* a snowflake is stand-offish as shit. In fact, I don't think political correctness has anything *directly* to do with this. Yes, it's there, but hear me out before you call me a lib. What I think happened was that DICE was tasked with creating a war story that empowers females, just like how the Lawrence of Arabia story in the last game focused on a female indigenous person. Problem is, DICE likes to stick with its guns and show obscure theaters of war, which is part of what the Italian, ANZAC and Lawrence of Arabia campaigns did in BF1, and they're also Scandinavian--like it or not, Norway is in DICE Stockholm's backyard, and they got involved with the Nazis, so they're kind of obligated to give Norway and its people the nod while they still have the chance. So anything to do with, say, the French Resistance--which CoD WWII covered decently enough for government work--is out of the question. And the Soviet Union is outside the current scope of the game; I think DICE openly said recently that their focus was on Western Europe and that the Pacific would not return, hence why the British and the Germans are the only two factions at launch, so you can't do those either. ('Sides, I don't think DICE is as daring to show ludicrous amounts of violence against Nazis as Treyarch was with WaW ten years ago. :P) So now you've only got a few theaters that make sense for 'obscure battles' starring only the launch factions; one focusing on an obscure combatant in Southern France during Operation Dragoon sponsored by the Allied launch faction, and another chooses the now-obligatory-at-this-point-in-history elite special forces story (with the equally outrageous criminal twist, but that's another story entirely). And Norway isn't exactly known for much *beyond* heavy water during the war. You might have a perfectly good war story in Operation Gunnerside, but that actually gets (at least partially) acknowledged in the ending as 'bloodless', while the version of events we got is anything but 'cause shootin' and stabbin' Nazis (even playing as a girl) is supposed to feel good. So naturally, in order to achieve the modern shooter's goal of being a quick and dirty 'power fantasy', you have to rewrite history some in order to get the obligatory 'female empowerment' story to work. Unfortunately for EA and DICE, you can't do that without breaking a few eggs. TL;DR: As much as I hate to say this, don't blame PC culture *completely.* Blame feminism and Gamergate for forcing this upon them. :P
@naggie6358
@naggie6358 5 жыл бұрын
@@Digolgrin or, and here me out here, they do operation Gunnerside justice in respect to all the people who died during it instead of replacing them all with 2 women one of whom is a bloody child. If they want to do one about female empowerment then they can pick some actual women who fought in WW2. Russia is right there, and the night witches were were so famous awards were given just for shooting one of them down. All they had to do was make a flying level with the night witches and boom, problem solved.
@Digolgrin
@Digolgrin 5 жыл бұрын
@@naggie6358 Do you refuse my explanation? Look, the Norway campaign acknowledges OP: Gunnerside in its ending. It doesn't call it by name, but it's there. The problem is that it acknowledges that no blood was shed during the actual operation. They captured one guy, who wasn't even armed, used his intel to get to the heavy water production equipment, blew it up, and then skiied away with not one Nazi seeing them abscond from the scene. From EA's perspective--maybe not from the perspective of Hideo Kojima or the other great stealth devs, but certainly from EA's--not killing anyone isn't fun. It doesn't create the power fantasy, that feeling of being an ultra-elite badass who slays entire platoons and blows up Tiger tanks by themselves, that EA and Activision want to invoke in us. So I'd argue their hands were tied here. Without the Soviet Union, which I wager isn't there 'cause they wanted to center the War Stories around the two launch factions as much as humanly possible, perhaps even on top of current events not painting a good picture for the Russians, you don't have many opportunities to empower women outside of the French Resistance, and believe me, after CoD: WWII let you play as a female French Resistance fighter, you don't want to be seen taking story elements from CoD. Norway, I wager, was the best thing they thought they could sacrifice. I will agree, though, the lack of a war story centered on air combat *in general* is disappointing.

Why is nobody talking about the fact that the mother and daughter, who should be very close to eachother, are talking two completely different dialects? The mom's got a Bergen dialect (city on the south-westcoast) and the daughter's dialect is somewhere around Oslo (eastern part of Norway). If I didn't miss anything from the backstory of these two, then the daughter should be switching to her mother's dialect when talking to her, which is/has been quite common for some time here in Norway. If you have been living with your family since birth, espesially at this time where travelling from one place to another was less convenient, then the dialect should be the same.But here, nothing was questioned at all. Was there some sad backstory behind the casting choices, or was DICE just lazy with the casting?

@@9elyx I’m not a fan of BF1 and I think you could feel that the experience and culture was starting to fall apart when compared with previous games, but with that said I do agree that it is a visually beautiful game and that in certain aspects it does have a great attention to detail. It’s a shame the same was not applied to the authenticity of the weapons and style of gameplay (they definitely were trying to cater to the COD fans more and more).

This is a dramatic take on the Norwegian resistance in general. It's creative but also captures the whole essence of it. Beautiful fantastic storyline. Whether it's a man or a woman holds no significance to us (had to mention it since some convey polarization on this, which is the opposite of what it is to be Norwegian). The particular raid upon which this is inspired is well documented, and the participant are just some of our (well recognized) war heroes. Some try to gaslight the whole German nuclear programme importance and the impact of this raid (and shipment destructions), to what ends or reason, I don't know. Well the programme was in full force by this point, and it's operations like this that is the exact reason their programme failed. It was discontinued by the Germans at a later point (due to Hitler's hands-on approach and relatively stupid descicions). At this point in history, Germans had made the most progress towards researching and developing this beast. At this point in history, objective logics tells any sane person this has to be stopped. Norway also has many interesting armed fights, but they get overshadowed by other events due to sheer size of them. Narvik (Norway) had the first allied victory happen upon them. One of the most decorated WWII allied fighter wings was a Norwegian fighter wing (under British command). Norwegian commandos were also made out of determined souls who left the country to return in force - and has laid the foundation to a culture around elite soldiers; one of, if not the, "best" in modern times. The Norwegian merchant fleet (who left to help the Allies) was absolutely crucial to supply the war effort for the Allies. Norway at this point had the 2nd largest merchant marine in the world (as it has had on several points in history). Well all know about the war at sea and the U-boat war and what had to be done to keep UK alive. Many Norwegian towns and cities suffered extensive damage, and North Norway suffered scorched earth "tactics" at the end of the war. Norwegian-german relations in general was neither here nor there, but not a single citizen forgot we were occupied, and Norway has been one people and one whole since the Viking era 1000 years ago, regardless of who claimed administrative control. Germany, in contrast, was/is only 200 years old, and might not understand the feeling of unity to the extent the common Norwegian had inherent in his/her bone marrow. I personally feel Norway's WWII story can not be overestimated; the deeper you delve into it, the more and more extensive it is. Here's to all the brave souls on all sides in WWII who fought with a passion and drive, specifically for what is good for humanity and Earth as a whole! Sorry for the long post

This mission is set in 1943. The historical mission was in 1944. The Medal of Honour mission (a PS1 game) featured a male American commando shooting his way through German soldiers.The Heroes of Telemark (a Hollywood movie starring Kirk Douglas) featured a team of American commandos as the protagonists. You can attack this BF5 mission for any number of reasons, but historical accuracy is not what I would choose. If you want a historically accurate rendition i recommend the Norwegian movie "Kampen om tungtvannet", which featured the actual commandos as the prime actors.
