I bought 5 rifles from the CMP back in the 80s. All came with the nice hard case. My M1903 is dated 1918 also. I paid $150 plus shipping for it and $300 a piece for the M1s. I gave 1 of the M1s to my Navy veteran son in law for his golden birthday.

Hi Dan, hi from South Africa. Got to say, we have a lot of advantages out here over the US. We may not get the variety of Milsurps like you guys but when we do, we pay very decent prices compared to you guys. My local range fee, $3 for the whole day. Ammo prices are much the same though. A year ago i got a Type 56 SKS, Rhodesian military import, $420, a Rhodesian FN FAL, $1050, A P14 303br, $200, an Israeli Mauser in 7.62, $600. Licensing is a pain in the butt but doable. cheers and greetings again

Dan I have a R4 with ATF paperwork and a IDF Galil civilian DOM 1986. The R4 cost a ton of USD as it was a pre 1986..ive seen R4's in Civilian hands in SA for 2000 USD...here its a 37K$ rifle. I'm from Durban originally. Moved to the US in 2000. I was under the impression private firearms ownership was practically impossible in SA now. Is that not the case? I had to do a police approved training course, provide proof of ownership of a Safe, and get my license from the police for my CZ83 that I carried for several years before I emigrated. Do you still have to jump thru those sorts of hoops? And do you still have the credit card style license with the fake handprint on it? I only realised it wasnt my palm print when I and several of my friends compared ours and found out they were all the same print!

I was out at that main range this past summer. I went there to see a paver I paid for along with a group of friends as a tribute to a good friend we lost a few years ago. It looks like you gentlemen were very close to it. It's on the firing line at position 36 and honors my late friend SMoAF, who had been a Virginia magistrate, class 3 dealer, and all-around great guy who put himself through law school by being an arms dealer. It was good to be reminded of him on this cold and rainy day here in his former home of Virginia.

Wow $392 for 400 rounds of 30-06. The North store definitely does not have ammo prices that are so generous. Also $25 for a full day at the Talladega range is a steal. I've seen plenty of ranges where it is $20 per hour for a range that pales in comparison.

I use to visit Marine Corp Reserve Armory, hanging around. One day the marines were loading 03 springfields into a crate. I asked " can I help" and was told yes. I got to make three trips, one rifle in each hand. The loading was done. Years later, I realized I may have handled the 03 my uncle might have carried on August 7th 1942 on the island Tulagi. He was a reserve Marine and was in company C of the first battalion of the 5th regiment. His battalion became the 1st Raider Battalion. Was KIA on the first day on Tulagi. Around 1988-89 I was at a gun show in Middletown NY and there was a dealer selling " 03s" at 250 each. He had a BUNCH of them.

Good job on getting that Marine rebuild 1903. Could tell from the round rear sight base/collar and the SA 1942 barrel it was a later rebuild. The barrel vice tool that left marks on the barrels used to rebarrel rifles stopped being used in 1942 cause it was started in 1938 due to many M1903's needing to be rebarreled. As rifles came in for rebarrels etc they would get the rebuild traits.

Its better for the surplus rifles and collecting community as well too know what these rifles are and be valued accordingly because it keeps them in there original states. Another USS California recovered rifle untouched non WW2 rebuilt sold for 25K at auction around 2-3 years ago.
