Neveron was a major Battletech outlet in 5th-6th grade. My First long term nation bought a damaged Mercury, and spent 4 days to have it brought back to full. A day after I got it back the massive nation from across the great lake attacked me. First combat was my one Mercury, 2 scorpions and a manticore. He brought two hunchbacks, one stinger, and a locust. My little quicksilver killed the locust, and then ran to flank his 4SP. Between my manticore's lrms and one ml hit I knocked out the mechwarrior. Next contact was the 4G and stinger. My Mercury got knocked out, but all three of my tanks scored hits- the Manti getting a tac and knocking out the ac20. Stinger killed one scorpion but got legged, and the 4G showed a clean pair of heels. Repaired my Mercury and salvaged a stinger and hunchback. Loved the Mech ever after that.

The Mercury suffers from its late introduction. Locust and Stinger are among the first generation of mechs introduced in the game. The Mercury wasn't present in the tabletop until the 2750 Technical Readout introduced it. This is over a decade later than the original 3025 Technical Readout. Mechs introduced in this and later material didn't have as many figures produced and sold as older mechs. A large portion of the player base stuck to "classic battletech" and 3rd Succession War era units rather than moving into the Clan Invasion era.

Hello Red. 'Back in the day'... low, these many decades ago (1984), few had access to the new Star League Mechs and few had the TRO's to back them up. Mostly, they were ignored and under used by my Playing Group. Myself, I used them happily, since they were faster than the standard Locust, and better armed in my opinion since they were an 'all-energy' build. Although MASC limited the design in some respects, it was a useful Mech for my forces. When 3050, 3055, and 3057 TROs came out, I took it upon myself to 'improve' the Mercury in some way. I found that by taking a MCY-105 (the version without the MASC), and exchanging the standard gyro for an XL Gyro, I had enough 'spare' tonnage to give the Mech a total of 4 ER Medium Lasers, and a Single ER Small Laser as well. Armored with 4 tons of Ferro-Fiberous Armor, it was decently protected, and still had a movement rate of 12-18-0. A still respectable speed, even in this day and age of faster Mech designs. Although Alpha Striking with this Mech, on the run, generates 23 heat... with 'only' the base 10 IS DSHS, heat creep is an issue for the Mech. But, a good pilot can 'run and gun' this Mech for several turns before generating enough of a heat issue to worry, or slow the Mech. The simple solution of continuing to run and not firing two of the four Lasers is enough to offset this build up. Somewhat like the 'heat burden' of an Awesome-8Q. In game, this works out that the Mercury, as altered, can shoot in a 'pattern'... 4,4,4,4,2,2, repeat. 12 movement in a straight line works out to a +4 penalty to be hit. And moving 18 generates a +6. Although if maneuvering, you'd never get above a +5 penalty running. Even so, that +5 is important to the Mercury, since it makes even excellent pilots miss their target more often than not. This translates to a longer battlefield lifespan for the unit, and more opportunities to use is ER Lasers to good effect. Although the MCY-100-UK is slower, and still retains it MASC, it does mount an ER Lrg Laser and a single standard Medium Laser. 9-14-0 (18). So, in general, this mech can only get a +4 penalty against being hit by running. If it engages the MASC it can get upwards of a +6, although some of that 18 pts of movement would definitely be used to maneuver. The MCY-100-UK's weapons during an 'alpha strike' only generate 15 heat. Add a run to that, and you never overheat. Other than the chance of doing horrible damage to the Mech's legs, the design is sound and useful. The ER Lrg Laser definitely goes a long ways to helping the Mech become more than 'just another scout' by extending the Mech's combat range envelope. All in all, I would say some Mercury designs are well worth the C-Bills it will cost to field them. Although, as said before, wise use of the Mech's abilities is crucial to its survival in Combat.

@jlokison2 жыл бұрын
The game developers weren't paying attention to what real world militaries were already starting to field in the 1980s. Pintle and ring mounted weapons were always easy to replace, even if they had a gunner shield or were mounted in a remote electric drive turret. The tanks that major powers, and Israel, put into service in the 80s can't just swap out main weapons, but entire turrets and engine compartments were designed to be easily replaced. The armor was often made modular so sections could be replaced as well as added onto, an exception being the M1-A2 putting a layer of depleted uranium between layers of advanced Chobham armor, but that could still have a layer of reactive armor bolted to it. The Merkava took this to extremes, allowing the Israelis to get a disable tank back into battle within hours of its recovery, helps if they can maintain control of the battle field though. It wouldn't be until the late 1990s early 2000s that Navies started testing truly modular warships where sections of the ship could be swapped out depending upon the mission they were embarking upon. These early designs were all considered failures but the USA, UK, and France are all still working on making modular warships work, I have not been able to find out if China or Russia are doing the same. We might also end up with exoskeleton assisted armored infantry sooner rather than later, DARPA has been working on that since the 70s.
@Sorain12 жыл бұрын
In part it's because if the 'omnimech' idea really got dug into, you stop having mechs as we know them in Battletech and eventually you end up with something closer to Armored Core's interoperable parts system. That wouldn't fit in Battletech as setting, where each mech design and variant is meant to have weight and matter, to be recognizable. It's one of those acceptable breaks from reality (and reason) I think we as fans know and accept.

Of all the mechs that aren't in (m)any of the video games, this is among those I'd most like to try commanding or piloting. The classics are great and I'll always love them - but slightly more obscure (and specialized) ones like this seem even more fun.

That is a very nice looking Mech. I love the 105 version, if I got that I would have to hunt down and retrofit LR/RA/CT Clan ER-Mediums to replace its current weapon package. [The extra range and power of a CER-Med would save me getting to close to Med-Pulse weapons]
@memnarch1292 жыл бұрын
You could get even more with a full clan Mercury redesign. Clan Ferro for weight savings and less crits. Add Clan Endo for more weight and your still going to be at same Crit amount the IS Standard structure plus Endo was. Meaning a XL might not be neccesary. Or use the saved weight for more heat sinks and upgraded weapons. Trully the Mercury is a prime example of if it had been retrofit and not just canabalized for its tech it would of been one hell of a mech imo.

Even in WW1 when a warship's guns were damaged or needed relining or the gun itself was replaced, not the whole turret Did space travel make people stupid? Apparently it does

Easily replaceable parts are as much a weakness as a benefit. It makes things vulnerable with poor connecting points. You can make something cheap and easily replaceable, or durable. Ask any soldier and they want their equipment to stay together for as long as possible. In Battletech its mostly just something to add to the lore. It wasnt until Quirks became and option that. If you actually ran a campaign then purchasing all sorts of spare parts is expensive.
@joshuaturnquist55382 жыл бұрын
Well, a lot of modern tech is not designed to have easily replaceable parts, to need special technicians to repair, or special failsafes to make the design not work with non-branded parts. Think of iPhones and most modern cars, they are very well built but not very customizable. You aren't repairing a Tesla in your garage. The Mercury is a high quality mech, but it retains the ability to be modified and repaired easily, making it kind of revolutionary even if going back to older concepts of maintenance.

I prefer this to the LCT, purely for the arms. Though I am not a fan of the arm mounted Medium laser. I like the double punch attack. Not a fan of MASC, but it does have its place in combat. Still the versatility of the STG and WSP with jump jets makes them the better generic scout. Runner scout cover more open space, but jumpers can navigate rougher terrain. Its amazing what happens when you go for medium lasers instead of silly MGs and SRM2s.
@EllenbergW2 жыл бұрын
Looking at MGs and SRMs from a pure combat pov, they don't make a whole lot of sense, but in a more, let's say roleplay setting and when using optional ammo rules, when you take a garrison contract, those MGs (rubber bullets) and SRM-2s (tear gas rockets) suddenly come in very, _very_ handy. I mean, sure, you can blow up all those protesters that surround a governmental building with heavy mech-weapons, but I'm pretty sure even your employer won't take too kindly to you eliminating half his workforce :) Also, let's not forget Infernos [evil grin]
@wheturangi2 жыл бұрын
@@EllenbergW I like this. But from a purely scouting role, lasers are better. No ammo explosions or running out. Plus you get more bang for your buck with lasers. Now from a militia view, MGs are especially good for riot control. An infantry platoon caught in the open can be wiped out by dual MGs (2D6 x 2). SRM2s are just there for inferno rounds for me. Guess I'm a war criminal. The standard STG and WSP are indeed better suited to garrison duty. Plus they are not as decisive in battle compared to most mediums and heavies.
