My favorite arcade beat-em-up as a kid, yes even more than AVP and others. Mainly it was because of Battletoads rarity. My mom got us an NES and the NES version of Battletoads sometime in the early 1990s and we would play together, always getting shut down on the turbo tunnel of course (especially since I was like 4-5 years old) About 5 years later I ran across this arcade version in a movie theater and my mind was blown...I was not expecting to find Battletoads there! Except it looked so much better and was basically Rated R. spent about 15 bucks in quarters that day on that Battletoads cabinet and still fire the game up in Retroarch at least once a month to this day. I love the violence and extra-sexy Dark Queen in this version :]

I was lucky enough to have an arcade near me that had both Battletoads, Metamoprhic Force, and Ninja Baseball Bat Man. I was freaking spoiled and didnt know it. I'm just glad to see someone review this game. The music is awesome, and honestly the victory jingle at the end of stages is top tier, slightly better than Mega Man, Castlevania, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest's victory jingles

My cousin spent half a summer with us once when we were young. So many days that summer we would head over to Sav-U-Foods and grab a carton of chocolate milk, then head to the bowling alley arcade to play this game. We spent so many quarters on it but were never able to beat it. Fast forward to the mid 00’s and I found this cabinet at a nickel arcade. The better news was that the 2nd joystick was broken, so it was set to free play. Needless to say, I stood at that cabinet until I finally beat it. If only my cousin had been with me. I'm going to stick up for my Toads here. NES Battletoads is a top 10 NES game. Perfect stage design, varriety, detailed sprites and backgrounds, amazing music. When it came out it was widely popular. It remains popular to this day because it is so good... And so hard. I've beet the majority of hard nes games and Battletoads is hard but fair. The enemy patterns are predictable, there are warps to help you practice. The game is short- 30 minutes. There is a disconnect between Battletoads and today's audience. For one, today's audience gets quickly frustrated with "pick up and die games". Personally I don't mind investing 16 hours into practicing Battletoads. After all I don't mind investing 40 hours into Chrono Trigger. Another problem is that Battletoads requires VERRY precise timing. As a result you can't beat it on a flatscreen tv with a wireless controller and a emulator. Which is probably the way most people try to play it today.

People who fall through the floors on stage 3 frequently make the mistake that they try to outrun the screen and get ahead "as quickly as possible". This game was a mere hearsay legend by the time I was renting Battletoads from Video Factory in 1998. It was kind of like an odd parallel to the issue of how I kept renting Simpsons games hoping that *this* one would finally be the one I played in the arcade with my friends. But I was too dumb, young and born to a couple video game-clueless parental units to figure that out until a few years later.
@raphaelfp4 жыл бұрын
I wonder why Battletoads in Battlemaniacs wasn't a simple port of this one, since the visuals are pretty similar - considered you would tone down the violence for SNES standards. They opted instead for something inbetween this one and the NES game, and in the end it's kind of just a regular game. This arcade looks and sounds absolutely insane

@duffman184 жыл бұрын
On the SNES battletoads I can't get past the bit where you're falling down a tunnel on hovercraft thing and the walls kill you and you're going really really fast. Even with save states I can't beat it. Maybe it's the input lag from the emulator, or maybe I'm just crap. I could slow the game speed down to 50% or something to get through it but that's not really beating it, is it, it wouldn't have the same satisfaction as actually beating it

I did enjoy the Battletoads arcade game. I heard of it for years, but never saw photos or video of it until more recent years. I never even saw it in arcades growing up.
