Marcus A. Conant, MD is a physician who treated thousands of HIV patients in the early 80s while running the inpatient dermatology service at the University of California San Francisco. Before anyone recognized the virus or understood that it was about to become a global epidemic, he took the lead in forming the Kaposi’s Sarcoma Research & Education Foundation in 1982, which later became the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.
Marcus conducted early clinical trials, persevering despite seeing 94% of patients die during the epidemic’s first years. His clinical experience sensitized him to the suffering caused by the disease. As a physician with a holistic perspective, his work expanded beyond the strictly clinical, to include education, research, and advocacy.
Marcus is currently a clinical professor emeritus at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco. He has published more than 70 articles on the treatment of AIDS, testified in front of Congress multiple times, and is a powerful advocate for the LGBTQ community.
He is currently the Chief Medical Officer at both American Gene Technologies and Addimmune.

Wow. Your interviews keep getting more powerful and informative. Thank you so much. Raif you have become a godsend to the hiv community. I am the spouse of a hiv positive person. I am negative. We are undetectable for the last decade. It is difficult for a positive person to cope with hiv that is understood but it is also difficult for his partner too. Would love to see you address the spousal / partner side of this issue. Thanks again for the terrific interview and all your efforts

Hey, thanks for the love and support. I wish I could say it was all by design but I think the guests themselves are so great they are really elevating the conversations we're having 🙏🏽 You bring up a VERY good point; and yes that's something i'll add to my list to explore. I have to admit, the list is growing faster than I can churn out content.

Dr. Conant was one of the members of the medical community since late 70s who had real commitment and dedication with the first patients of the first wave of the HIV/Aids pandemic, excellent interview and I'm glad to see that his work continues, despite of all these working decades in research, medical practition and activist labor on the HIV field, now on the development of a possible cure, extraordinary human being. Excellent interview Raif, I would like suggest you another HIV hero since the first years of the epidemic, Dr. Paul Volberding, of the SF General Hospital, would be a great guest for remind us those first days.

Thank You Raif. I am 68 years old and so I saw this all from the beginning. My ex was vice president of the Gay Activists Alliance in NYC when I met him in 1976. I have so many stories from many perspectives since I was married to a woman who was becoming a cardiac surgeon who knew I was very bisexual years before we got married. She died of AIDS in 1987 after we had divorced and she did not get it from me, thank God. People tell me I need to write about so many aspects of my life that are stranger than fiction. Any way I thank you for what you're doing and for the fact you care.

Hi, I would love to discuss the aspects of AIDS/HIV. I am from St. Petersburg Florida (SF Now) and have been HIV+ for over 40 years. I would like to discuss my experience with HIV through the years. Insurance issues, DDC from Mexico, wives and children getting HIV from husbands, sex workers with HIV having babies over and over, and many people who did not meet qualifications for treatment. Also, the loving support and the wonderful people who have died. Warriors, teachers, and loving friends. The stigma of having HIV. The list goes on.

Raif and Dr. Conant, you are two shining lights in a very dark world today. You give me hope and encouragement to continue fighting the good fight through education of the young. So many young people today are still without the toxic stigma that society imposes on them for sexually transmitted disease. I think education is the answer to keep them safe from that toxicity that destroys their spirit. Thank you so much for who you are and what you do..............Ray

My idea in order to cure is like that: Virus mutates a lot. We need to stop its mutation at least on its surface protein antigens. If we can force the virus to produce same antigen on its surface via an mRNA vaccine or a drug and wait till all viruses has same antigen on their surfaces and after that to the patient we can give specific antibodies in order to demolish viruses because anymore they expressed same specific antigens on its surfaces.
