I forgot about everything but Baldur's Gate for like a week, and had no idea what DnD was or how to make videos on it. So I wanted to do a little series with all the companions, or at least the romance-able ones n give you a breakdown of who they are and what's the hizzaaps with their stories. Gale was the first character I thought was actually cool, then not, and now he's a weirdo. Might do Shadowheart next I dunno. Love and kisses, the Logan.

There are a bunch of useless artifacts in Act 1 specifically for Gale. Saving Arabella gives you one, the trapped sarcophagus room in Withers’ dungeon gives you another, and there’s a third one you get for free (can’t remember it). Otherwise, you can always pay the druids for random artifacts.

There comes a moment where you, the player, can lick the carcass of a dead giant spider. If you KEEP licking the spider carcass; Gale will quite angrily demand that you stop doing that.

@@amduil8168 Well, you see... I was playing an Ascendant Dragon monk who was pretty high level. Being immune to disease and poison certainly contributed to the idea but so did the AD's blindsight. I extrapolated that I could find my way through the dark cave by just licking things since I didn't have darkvision

@@amduil8168 Well the whole idea behind the corpse is that the demon Yurgir(same area) have been seasoning the meat he feeds to his displacer beast with succubus spittle to keep it charmed, i think it's even implied that they are 'lovers'. I think the whole 'lick it' part is all about how a Succubus kiss make mortals with poor willpower desire more kisses or well in this case more 'licks' hinting at that the charm/suggestion magic actually comes from the saliva itself.

If Gale dies as part of your party, he will use a illusion to ask you to revive him. He has special pouch with instructions to open with a revival scroll. His corpse emits an aura that damages you if you stand to close to it

In the final fight I had gale equipped with the Staff of Keraska, it grants a special ability which I wanted to use. when I went to click it I accidently clicked the "explode Gale" button and ended the game.

The spell plague and mystras death actually lasted for 10 years. The highest spell anyone could cast, even gods, was a 13th level spell, and they were still nigh impossible. It was a 13th level spell Karsus used, "Karsus's Avatar"

He blindsided me with his Mystra-head-bust/tutor-though-the-Weave-shennanikings thingy, before Astarion asked me to go canoodling in the woods with him. Oh well. He does have a certain charm, that's for sure!

Looking back I think it makes sense that he wants to be a god - he wanted more power from Mystra but she denied him, so he got the relic for her. When it turned into a problem for him she simply left him all alone for at least a year without any help or aid and only contacts him to tell him to blow himself up. Hearing about a magic crown that could free him and also let him be a superior god to Mystra (or at least what he believes he would be) certainly feels like something Gale would do, especially when he has found actual friends and a reason to live on. It is kind of sad really, Gale has so much love to give has been completely alone for so long save his feline friend... Deep down he just wants friends as far as I can tell, I mean when he talks about being a god he makes sure that he would use it for his friends - he is desperate to hold on to his life now that he has friends and he is also determined not to lose them. Kinda sucks he can't become a god without Mystra putting him down though...

He didn't get the orb for Mystra. Gale wanted something, something he thought he could only get from Mystra, and Mystra said "no". He got the orb to convince (*cough* coerce *cough*) Mystra into giving him what he wanted. When she repeated her "no", he descends into depression. He really thought that was going to work, and since he knows everything, he now lives with the dark certainty that he will never get what he wants because he can't force his ex to give it to him. This is the point where he *almost* starts to redeem himself. He begins to pay lip service to contrition, and starts to view his actions as less of a failure, and more of a "I fucked up". He even manages to spit out the line "I crossed her boundaries". I was so proud of him. Then he see's the crown - and instantly 180's on all that soul work. If you give Gale everything he wants, he takes the crown, IMMEDIATELY lords it over Mystra's head. He drops any pretense he had of making her whole, or righting the wrongs done to her precious Weave. He declares that he has finally gotten everything he ever wanted, he is a God. Also, Mystra, there ain't room for both of us, I'm better in every way and I am finally gonna put your smug ass in place. And Gale lives that life for about 3 seconds before Mystra snaps him out of existence. 3 seconds longer then he deserved. Gale is a terrible person.

@@bunnerkins Kinda long but: He did get the Karsus Weave for Mystra, but not in the way you’re interpreting. Gale believed he needed proof of his love for her, as a way to show his dedication, to finally get her to treat him as her actual lover. Because she never treated him as an equal despite leading him on romantically, putting him on a pedestal for years, and feeding into his gifted-kid syndrome while making him feel isolated mentally from his colleagues and family- he says he no longer had any meaningful mortal connections with anyone while with Mystra. He truly loved/worshiped her and still calls her his ‘beloved’ in Act 1 before he learns Mystra’s orders for him. Do you really think Gale, the mortal with no power in the relationship, was 'coercing' THE goddess of magic? The immortal goddess who controls all his life's work/access to magic, taught him from a young age, and then made him her lover while being infamous for preying on talented, young male wizards as she did with Elminster? Gale was in a power-imbalanced relationship and was exploited for his talents, and this made him believe that if his own goddess wasn’t going to treat him as an equal despite showing his immense talents and dedication, he'd need a grand gesture in the form of his talents to show his worth to her. All the companions are victims of power imbalances. Just like Lae'zel/Shadowheart or Wyll/Karlach, Gale/Astarion are two sides of the same coin, just having different traumas and backstories. They're both specifically exploited for their talents/bodies without care for them as a person, and they can both be influenced to be better or worse by the player character. The PC can help them either break the cycle of abuse or convince them to double down and gain more power to become what they think is a 'better' version of themselves, as protection from that exploitation again. Gale's insecurities regarding Mystra's influence on his is even in all his romantic scenes, where he thinks he has to impress Tav with ‘god-like’ romantic gestures the same way he had to with Mystra; then he thanks you if you prefer his more ‘human’ attributes because he learns that he’s worthy of love without magic. He may naturally have wizard hubris, but he’s not a bad person and is remarkably amicable and good-hearted, additionally being willing to sacrifice himself to save others and covering his self-esteem issues underneath his exaggerated bravado regarding his talents. Gale’s interpretation of their break-up that he tells the PC is a fawning response, because in Act1 he doesn’t even realize he was groomed due to being so swept up in Mystra and his love for magic, that he doesn’t see any flaws in her despite her having MANY (like SH with Shar or Lae'zel with Vlakkith). Him saying he tried to ‘cross her boundaries’ isn’t a consent thing, but a restriction she put up only for wizards who try to reach her levels because she doesn’t want to be threatened by them. In which case, it doesn’t make her look good- even after Karus' Folly, for Mystra to get so involved with a mortal & string them along in a romantic relationship is so unreasonable. Allowing a mortal like Gale (someone she knows has a similar backstory to Karsus) to enter her realm or learn enough about controlling the Weave is already enough of a threat to her existence, even if he never had bad intentions. You would think the goddess of all magic would have better things to do than exploit and sleep with a student of magic and would rather try to avoid any other wizards from attempting to get too close after the events with Karsus. Yet she continued to interact in this way with Gale and other unsuspecting wizards before him, and gods can only see mortals as playthings until they lose interest in them with no regard towards their feelings. It's argued that Gale shouldn't have attempted to gain more knowledge about the Weave- but she put him in that spot to begin with, as she's a powerful immortal being with infinite knowledge and knows how emotional and complex mortals can be. Gale's reasons for wanting the Crown of Karsus stem from his realization that Mystra will never truly value him or potentially other mortals. His main motivation for reaching godhood becomes to make magic accessible for everyone, remove the restrictions the gods impose, and prevent them from using mortals as playthings like he feels he is. His character flaw is that he doesn't think he'd become corrupted by the power too, but his feelings stem from his new revelation that he genuinely feels exploited by Mystra and that she never truly loved him but saw him as another plaything like her other mortal exs. His other flaw revolves around having raised standards for himself and his abilities ever since he was praised in childhood, so him believing he wouldn't become corrupted or repeat the cycle of mortals with god-like powers becoming corrupt might be naive but it makes sense for his character. Like how Astarion doesn't realize ascending would change his whole personality and make him Cazador 2.0, repeating the abuse cycle.

​@@beccazachI swear I had to check who wrote this comment half way through because I thought it was me! 🤯 I 100% agree with this, the only trouble I find with his story/paths is how some parts are written (or perhaps I don't know a lick about D&D lore or I'm a sucker for handsome wizards with pretty words), as in his 2nd love scene I saw both options and I went for the shinny magic one because I thought it was more personal with him talking about his home and when they talk about the Crown in Act 3 I encouraged him because he sounded so convincing, for sure he would manage to control the Crown, get rid of the Orb and be a good God and he's so excited so I was a bit bummed to hear Tara upset in the epilogue, like it wasn't right, I get the point of "you're kenough" but he also achieves this on his own, gets rid of Mystra's influence and can stay with Tav, even if he's smugger about his feat.

@@monicabellu9566Great minds think alike lmaoo. The implications of Mystra targeting him bc she was only impressed by his talents at a young age is icky. And how it makes him equate her magic & her approval as the highest form of authority and praise is incredibly damaging mentally/emotionally for his self-worth. Not to mention, his proximity to her basically causes him to be coerced into a 'romantic' relationship, out of limerance and not true love since she holds incredible power over him and his craft. I also used to not think the astral romance scene was healthy for him either, but I've come around to realizing that his love for magic isn't the problem. Something inherent to him is his natural lust for life/knowledge, and taking that away from him isn't great, esp since he ends up being able to use his love for magic & imagination to spark some good in either of his 'good' endings (Blackstaff professor or hero of Baldur's Gate). This is partly why his god-ending is bad because he becomes detached from those human aspects of him. The other reason is that, how Mystra is a neutral god, god Gale isn't evil like Ascended Astarion but he still becomes who he was fighting against- just another god who becomes apathetic to mortals/humanity and sees them as only pawns for his domain/power. But no, I definitely have gripes about how Larian approached his story. It's the fact that while all the companions' arcs revolve around being manipulated by higher powers & having been groomed/indoctrinated when they're most vulnerable, Gale is the only one in the story who is not treated like a victim and even seen as an embarrassment in certain dialogue options when you're romancing him. But all that aside, I mostly have a problem with how his arc ends with him (most of the time) having to return back to being his abuser's 'Chosen' even after it's established that the gods take advantage of their Chosens just to make them do their dirty work. I appreciate that he can choose to leave the crown in the Chionthar on his own and the orb will naturally calm down without having to beg for Mystra's forgiveness, but I hate that Larian didn't delve into Gale's trauma as more than just his ex being mad at him.

Also I actually killed Gale early on after saving him from the portal (I wanted to keep my party small so to not have to bother with everyone at the camp). Two nights later he blew up the entire coast. After loading the save I had to do a fun magic quest to resurrect him before that could happen. After that he earned a place in my party.

The spell Karsus casted was of 12th level. Karsus' Avatar. Unfortunately, he did not realize that it could potentially kill a god... Which he thought the goddess of magic was an appropriate choice to briefly be granted godhood.... aaaaaand magic crashed.

The spell stole a gods powers temporarily, it didn't kill them. Mystryl sacrificed herself because despite having the power, Karsus didn't have the knowledge to use that power properly, causing magic to go nuts.

@@Yattien89 I guess you could phrase it like that, what it actually did was he straight up possessed and became her, he saw for an instant just how fucking bad what he just did was since Mystra was keeping the threads of magic from unraveling due to constant high level magic use and if she stopped for a moment tears would form, mystra immediately knew she was being possessed and killed herself to prevent it, with her death magic stopped working for a moment and that caused all sort of bad shit. When she revived herself she made a rule that no spells over 9th level could be used, technically you can still use them but she made it that they fail the first time you cast them and it might kill you, however if you cast them a second time they'll be cast as normal. Also this is why wild magic exists. Also also Karsus could have possessed any god with his spell as it was that powerful, he chose mystra as he thought she would be the most fitting for the problem he was trying to solve.

Mystryl (not Mystra) sacrificed herself, effectively ending magic, to block Karsus. "He had spent years researching Karsus's avatar, the only 12th-level spell ever created, which was designed to temporarily rob a deity of their power and grant it instead to the spellcaster. Karsus chose to rob Mystryl, and when her godly essence poured into him his mind and body were overwhelmed and he found that he was incapable of wielding such power. Mystryl's hold on the Weave was weakened and it began to unravel. Magical effects doubled in power briefly, then became wild and chaotic. To save the Weave from permanent damage Mystryl chose to sacrifice herself, which broke Karsus's connection, killing him, and stopped all magic for a short time."

Tara actually shows up in Act 1 if you play as a Gale pc at your camp. Also 100% supported him being Karus 2.0 Mystra has it coming for being the cosmic gatekeeper. The super magic missile you can learn from his quest is insane, came in clutch with defeating a certain italian painter.

The gold elves were shattering space and time to crack the continents apart, and only exist on this plane because they shattered thier entire home plane with high magic. People were waging world wars, and trying to kill fundamental aspects of reality. Yeah fuck 'em, if infinite spells mean genocides and planet-cracking god-kings, time to put a limit on how big of weapons people can get. Those spells are still accessible btw, they just require big rituals and lots of people working together. Instead of one nutjob deciding he's going to start sending everyone to the moon, or deleting entire biomes, or throwing around literal nukes. like, mile wide explosion of hundreds of fire and hundreds of radient damage. Not to "um actually" you but im obsessed with Gale so 3 mins in let me say that Gale was actually still pretty young when he summoned Tara his tressym because his mom didnt let him have a normal cat as a kid. Then when Gale fell out of favor with mystra by almost consuming all of magic through the karsite weave he secluded himself entirely from the world. Tara, his only companion would fly off and get him magical things to consume during this quarantine. Tara herself has nothing to do with mystra and her will shes literally just Gales pet since childhood. Edit: Also she can be found on top of the roof of the church in act 3

I do think (at least in earlier versions of the game) it was easy to accidentally romance him though cuz he’s like “wanna learn magic?” and you say “sure”, and suddenly boom you’re dating apparently. Might’ve just been an Early Access thing though since he offered to teach me some magic words once or something and it didn’t lead to us dating

I was really shocked when 1) Gale started randomly started hitting on me in the middle of the Shadowlands and I turned him down and we didn't kiss under the aurora, then 2) was all "It's me or Astarion" because I had just been nice to him but he fell into the IRL trap of "PERSON IS NICE, THEY MUST WANNA CAST GREASE TWICE AND MAKE TWO GREASE PIGS IN A BLANKET." But apparently a patch came out today that fixes that. At first I thought it was just me being denser than a neutron star😅 Don't get me wrong, I do wanna see just how dexterous his Mage Hand is, just not in this current playthrough.

Oh my gods, literally same 🤣 Astarion was all surprised that I 'ended things with Gale' for him, but honey, me and Gale weren't ever even a thing. The first time I thought he was just showing me a magic trick (where I chose the option to not fantasise about kissing him but just stopped and stepped away, thinking it was a neutral or gentle no) and the second time the options were 1. "OMG you have a magic cat? Tell me more!" or 2. "I f*cking HATE cats", to which of course I chose the first dialogue choice because hello, I am a woman of culture and I love cats but also am trying to not be a terrible being... didn't realise that was all the invitation Gale needed to start declaring he wants to "cast grease twice and etc etc" in the Shadowlands...🤣 Thanks for the patch, Larian. Hope I get to make use of it in my coming playthroughs, at least.

Fun fact, doing the Gale ending doesn't actually "beat" the game, it just ends it. Even in the credit roll it says how all the padpoles now transform into mindflayers and how there was a different destiny for you. Also none of the "beat the game" achievements trigger here.

Ive actually broken his whole quest with my character. I didnt pick him up as a companion till i was about to leave act 1, then he instantly started wanting a magic item, but i didnt want to give him the one i was currently using, so o said just give me time. Went to my chest found an item that i was okay with feeding him went back, and he now doesnt have a quest to progress. Im in act 3 now and nothing. I broke him.

Gale is the reason I even played the game longer, he's a likable and endearing character which got me to tolerate shadowheart and leazel due to how hostile and obnoxious they are then I got to meet wyll and karlach to immediately replace them and be happy with the party

@@Grey-po3lz he takes the time to explain himself and is even ready to apologize for any inconvenience he causes your character, but he knows he has to do so or it could mean the death of potential hundreds. It's also helps that he cares about the lives of people around himself and is happy to help people and more then willing to do so peacefully. Even if you pick the options that are mean to him he will apologies if his witty banter ever offends.

Mf lizeal can't handle any nice options, shadowheart can't handle most options to tolerable to loezeal options, she stayed made when we were with the Gith as if somehow she knew better than lizeal..i typically play through things with options id pick if I were the character in this situation. Hell I like Astarion but its annoying he can't stand adventure. You cant be acting like its one time or occasional issue the way companions respond because, they constantly respond. No one wants to deal with companions that constantly complain about how you navigate the world you are trying to explore. I like Gale because he's fine with diplomacy and a lot of nice dialoyge options. I'm not going to be intrigued by a glorified murder hobo that is liezeal. Also being intrigued by negative behavior is already a weird concept in itself. If someone don't like me I ain't poking my nose in they business. Its odd to me folks act like people can't like npcs when they out bristling every convo like a porcupine.

Leazel on the other hand is not mild she will jump to killing immediately for the smallest problems. Gith are a race that revolve around being assholes and even in dnd many DM and players can take it too far, not happy it's kinda the same here but it is lore accurate.

The cat shows up if you play AS gale (choosing him as origin upon starting a new game) OR you can find her on top of the monastery in the first town in act 3, right before entering baldur's gate lower city. There's a quest you get that requires you to find her if you use talk with animals and speak with the carrier pidgeons in the post office.

Little bit of lore ,here: Karsis used a spell to try and take over as a god. It could have been any god, but he chose the god of magic. Coincidentally, trying to supplant the god of magic turns off all magic temporarily, meaning that the magic that would make him god of magic stopped magicking halfway and made a super-Oppenheimer that destroyed most of the magic-based society of the time.

"Unfortunately, his choice was a terrible mistake, for one of the responsibilities of the deity of magic was to regulate the flow of magic to and from all beings, spells, and magic items in the world. Lacking the ability to do so properly, magic surged and fluctuated. With her last remaining bit of power, Mystryl sacrificed herself to block Karsus's access to the Weave, causing all magic to fail." Mystryl's sacrifice caused magic to fail which caused the magic cities to fall from the sky. Karsus actually did, temporarily, become the God of Magic. He just didn't have the knowledge to back it up.

There is an option 6: *SPOILERs* there are ways to beat the final fight without Gale getting his hands on the macguffin but still having him in your party, in the post fight conversation he mentions the macguffin is still around albeit broken and that he plans to reforge it, although I imagine what he plans to do with it post-repair depends on you decisions up until that point.
