I live fairly close to the Olympic National Forest. I've seen cedar with ridges in the bark big enough to hide in. Moss layers 9 inches thick. Smells don't always travel just because of how humid it is. The denseness muffles sound. Surroundings can look both identical and nothing alike at the same time. Weird pockets that just make your skin crawl. How more don't get lost is a miracle. More-so in such a more remote area.

I was used to carrying the usual, a mirror, whistle, rain tarp, protein bars, water, etc. plus a hunting knife. Thanks Brian. All hikers should read the book “Deep Survival”, best book on the psychology and science of survival. It’s not a book about foraging for food and the like, it’s about impossible survival stories and the guided understanding of why some people survive and others don’t.

Also bring a way to start a fire. What does you sat phone cost you?
@bawattsylКүн бұрын
@michaelspring3915 yes very true! I usually carry a bic mini lighter and some waterproof, special matches. My sat com, I purchase extra search and rescue insurance through it (beyond the basic plan.. for obvious reasons) So, between that and my monthly its around 500 a year (those are years when I'm out in the field for 3 to 4 months) but I have it set to the highest amount of texting when I'm in the field. Plus of the amount the insurance is roughly $250.. Normally the SOS insurance is only 25 dollars a year and your monthly plan is based mostly on how much you are planning on texting.. for me when I'm out there for several months, I set it for the unlimited plan which is like 65 dollars a month.. Then I adjust it back to the basic plan when I'm not in the field. Which is around $18 a month.. or I can pause it all together.. and it's $0.. The plans usually mostly just relate to the texting features.. and how much you're able to text.. Everything else will work on your device with just your yearly subscription which for me is 30 dollars plus usually $25 for the SOS and basic SAR insurance.. What I'm saying is most people can pay 50 dollars a year... turn on the texting when they plan to be out and turn it off when they aren't to save money.. You could pay as little as 50 dollars a year.. That’s what makes them so great.. They are so versatile and you're not locked into anything.. Plus, with your yearly subscription of paying the 50 dollars, that includes SOS , ALL the features on your device and usually roughly 15 text messages.. For some people that's all they need. You just always want to make sure you activate whatever kind of device you get before going out...because almost all require activation, plus a small yearly fee for SOS and SAR emergencies. Let me know if you have any other questions! I'm Happy to help! Thank you for watching and your feedback! Have a great week!

That area is VERY rugged and lots of places are super off grid and not maintained. Many trails and lakes that you can't even get near without a 4wd. Absolutely zero cell service the second you turn off of the main roads onto the forest roads. Hardly any trail signs or site markers. Sheer drop-offs aside the winding, giant pothole ridden, narrow, steep switchback roads. Ranger stations are quite far apart and the phones are on fiber internet, so when that goes out you can't even contact them. We camp near Council Lake often, and it's absolutely beautiful.. breathtaking in fact. I actually want my ashes spread there. But Gifford demands over the top preparedness and utmost planning. It can def make you feel incredibly small. We never go for a weekend trip without a hell of a first aid/survival kit with antibiotics, and at least 2 weeks worth of provisions, just in case. I'm so very sorry for the loss of these men, but I do hope their families can take some comfort in the absolute beauty of their final resting place. ❤

These missing hiker cases always astound me. What actually happened to all the people who disappear? I wonder if some of them just deliberately wandered off trail with the intent of never being found.

I’m leaning more toward something unexplained or foul play with your theory coming in third. I think about that from time to time.

Lava field. 100% fell in a hole. Lava fields are filled with tunnels.

Interesting stories. Seems like a dangerous place to hike. Sometimes I wonder if these places should have restricted access. Would like to be entered into the giveaway, please.

“dozens of cases of unsolved missing persons in that area”?? Excuse me? And what are the theories of COD?
@bawattsylКүн бұрын
That's what the new lead detective was saying back in August when the 3 sets of remains were found in the same area within days of each other.. They said: "there are still dozens of Unsolved cases of people who went missing from Skamania county.. " I'm sure he was talking about all.. not just people who were out hiking. They said: " they are constantly working cold cases and in cases like these, are always trying to put together new recovery missions. " That's actually part of what I was going to be doing had I been able to go out to Washington this summer.. working recovery missions and investigating cold cases in the field.. Hopefully more cases will continued to be solved🙏🙏 Thank you for watching and your feedback! Have a great week! 🙏

There are holes all over that place. Trees stood when the lava flowed over that land. The trees left behind molds of their bases that are now holes that can be narrow and deep.

Maybe a lot of the people who go missing do so on purpose
@bawattsyl7 сағат бұрын
Actually, sadly I have covered several cases where that turned out to be what happened! I couldn't believe it! But in these particular cases, I personally don't think that's what happened. Thank you for watching and your feedback! Have a great week!

It was startling when you said authorities claim there are dozens of cases of missing persons in this area. It’s bad enough when a person is never found because there is no closure but when remains are found and there is no definitive cause of death that’s heartbreaking 💔. I really wonder what is going on in the National Parks with so many missing people and those who die without a discernible cause of death. I think there is something going on but I don’t know what. Good job Bryan keeping the cases of the missing and the unexplained deaths in people’s minds and also working with SAR groups. Everyone carry a satellite device, 1 or 2 emergency blankets, a LifeStraw and water bottle plus some nutrition supplements. It’s not much but could save a life. 👍🌞☮️🏔️🌲🥾❤️🩹

Thank you for watching and your feedback! 🙏🤗Yes! Definitely scary! Although, I think he was referring to their whole county of Skamania.. not just the forests.. but still very scary! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and the awesome info! Have a wonderful week!
