Some time in April 2022 this video came across my KZbin feed and the next day I signed up for flying lessons. My biggest challenge turned out to be getting the FAA medical certificate (thyroid cancer survivor). I persevered and got my PPL April 2, 2023 and bought a Cessna 182 a month later. My IFR check ride is scheduled in November and I’m planning on Commercial, CFI,CFII after that. Flying has been a life long dream and I finally realized it at 43 years old. Now my family and I enjoy flying cross country to visit friends/family and going to fly-ins and air shows. We are planning on going to Oshkosh in 2024, hopefully my two girls catch the aviation bug 🤞. Thanks for giving me the motivation to follow my dreams.

It's work to do so - I know that from personal experience - but in general, I've found that if you want something badly enough, you will find a way to get it. It won't be easy, and it won't necessarily be quick, but it can be done if you are willing to work at the training and be disciplined enough to learn what you need to learn. It took me a dozen years of going to school part time while working to earn a living, raising a young child, and dealing with a marriage that definitely was NOT made in heaven, but I did it, and graduated with a B.S. in computer engineering when I was 35 years old. @StevieTriesenberg I Saw your trip to Oshkosh and have been so damn inspired to get my license. When I was 16 & finished my chemo for Hodgkin's I started flying with my uncle. He passed away a few years later and no one else in the family could fly so they sold his plane, and because I wore glasses and was "Sick", I let people tell me I could not do this for a living. I am 50 now and as I go through my ground school lessons and the 3 hours in the air thus far, I want to leave my job, get my PPL, get my instrument rating & commercial license and somehow turn this passion into a career. All because of you and that interview with the FAA and your KZbin and the clever TikToks. SO THANK YOU for inspiring an old man to reset his life and live his passion. You are my inspiration.

Dude, awesome that you're getting your PPL. A bit of advice, if I may: please DO NOT underestimate recreational flying. Don't go thinking that professional flying is a must in order to fulfill your flying aspirations. I'll let you in on a little secret: professional flying is, at the end of the day, a job. Like most jobs, it can (usually does) get old after a while. Recreational GA flying is where it's at. Go get a tailwheel endorsement, or a glider rating or seaplane rating. Go tow gliders, go flight instructing. There are so many way cool things to do in GA.

This woman seems like a very conscientious and safe pilot. I love her attention to the checklist. I"m 75 now and was in Army Aviation in Georgia and in Vietnam. My dad had a Piper Tri-Pacer when I was a kid and we flew to Texas and Oregon many times. He even bought a Tri-Pacer that had been flipped in a windstorn and bought spars and fabric, rebuilding it himself. The neighbors would come over and have a beer in the back yard as dad was shrinking the fabric to the completed wings with a hot plate. He paid a lot of attention to the checklist and, in the air, we were all tasked with watching for other planes. My wife wondered why I wasn't bored flying with Stevie from Michigan to Camarillo. I think because we had flown into Albuquerque and I remember taking a long time to get over the mountains when we departed. The Tri-Pacer wasn't a very powerful aircraft but easy to fly.

I remember when I had my 1st airplane stored at Strongsville Oh. when I was 24 in 1975. I had a 1958 Cessna 182. We use to like going up to Kelly's, but flew day or night over the lake at a good altitude. We use to have to click the mike 3 times to turn on the runway lights. I like the extra power the 182 had, could load full fuel and adults and never had to worry much about weight or balance. It was rated for slips which I loved to do to come over the trees and land and turned off mid runway in 1350 ft. at Strongsville. I used that aircraft to get my private license and during my test ride for private I surprised the examiner coming in to high for my emergency landing over a farm and my examiner went to tell me I was too high and just as he said that I slipped it in and said I rather have altitude and lose it fast than be too short.😀

@@joematties7557 I looked into that, pretty closely. The sticky part is the “if you know you have a limiting condition you are ineligible.” (Paraphrased). I have a hard time skirting something like that, ethically. The guilt would just be too much, I think.

@@daviddixon101 I guess it depends on the limiting condition. If its high blood pressure you manage then it doesn't count. If it's something that would cause you to hurt someone like random seizures then yeah that could be fatal to more than just you. @@daviddixon101 I get you, bro. I had a small thrombosis in my leg ( sitting motionless and dehydrated in a cramped cockpit) and the cloth unfortunately got loose eventually and clogged itself in the main pulmonal artery. I recuperated quickly from this emboly but the blood thinner that I got to take now grounded me quicker than a tail spin. Glad to live a normal life, no issues, healthy and fit as can be. But anticoagulants are an absolute no go. So I emigrated to South America and at least I can co pilot a friend who is a bush flyer and do everything from the right hand seat. My friend is glad for the help and I don‘t get paid, so everybody is happy. Wish you all the best, friend. Saludos 👍🇺🇾♥️

Such a small world we live in. I did a video on my channel coming in to land at kelley's with my son and his friend. Annnnnd I blew a tire lol. Robbie was in my video too. Your friend was extremely kind and helpful getting the airplane safely off the runway until the guys from 16G could come in and swap out the tire. I learned from my mistake. I failed to retract my flaps and was on the brakes pretty good. I fly into Put-in-Bay quite often and the islands are great place to take people on quick flights out of Tiffin, OH. Awesome video! Great stuff. New Sub.

Just caught your move to Cali video part 1 and so thought I'd check this out, not realizing it was Kelly's island until I started it. As a 9 yr old standing at the fence watching planes fly over my head I was fascinated. Out of all the vacations and States we traveled to. Kelly's island will always be the vacation I cherish the most for many reasons, one being riding around in a golf cart and standing at that runway. I can't wait to see more videos.

I liked middle bass years ago. Just had to make intentions clearly known with your down wind --- their grilled chicken beat that of the Chicken Patio at South Bass hands down. (I may be picky- we cooked 420 halves at a time, some days 5 or 6 batches, at Murphy's Party Barn and Picnic Grounds by the Columbus zoo) The last time we saw aircraft their they were all rotor wing the day that the balcony collapsed. We were still active fire/EMS at that time.

I love watching your videos- I’m living vicariously through them as I’ve always wanted to learn how. My question is I’ve done some research on your split tail Bonanza and it doesn’t exactly have a good reputation for safety. I’ve seen it called Galloping Gurty and the Widow maker. Doesn’t exactly instill confidence in the aircraft. Do you feel safe in the aircraft?
@vk2ig
@vk2ig 2 жыл бұрын
It's also been called the "Doctor Killer" ... I guess Stevie isn't a doctor so she's fairly safe? Seriously though, I'm told that a V-tail Bonanza is not an aeroplane to "get behind", as otherwise you can get into very serious trouble very quickly. There are tales in earlier years of structural problems - but in those instances was that the aircraft structure failing under normal flight conditions; or was it people getting "behind the aeroplane" and putting the aircraft outside its flight envelope, e.g. exceeding Vne before they knew what was happening?
@sganzerlag
@sganzerlag 2 жыл бұрын
Her plane is over 70 years old and hasn't crashed yet. How much safer can an airplane possibly be? The v-tail Bonanzas are great airplanes. You could argue they are even safer than the regular-tailed Bonanzas, since the v-tail variant had to undergo a special FAA review of its certification process. These are mature aircraft that have been around for a very long time and all issues have been discovered and addressed long ago. Edit: the only real problem I see with the v-tailed Bonanza is that I don't own one. Ditto for the Cessna 140.

Hi Stevie. I love the checklists. The Bonanza is such a fly by the numbers aircraft. I have some time in a E35 and watching your video reminded me of all those things I had to remember when flying the Beech. 100,90, 80mph on final and 75ish across the fence. Always burn the left tank first and burning from right tank also fills the left....so the older Bonanza teaches you fuel management. Cowl flaps on decent to not cold shock engine coming from out of altitude. Love that you check the gear like three times before landing....that's a expensive mistake....can't check enough. Anything else that is particular to a older Bonanza? Also can you explain the electric prop setting...never got enough flight time in the Bonanza I flew to understand correctly. I remember that in auto mode on cruise climb to reduce power and twist the auto prop like a 1/4 turn? What is your process? Does the pilot handbook mention switching from auto to manual? Been a long time since I flew a Bonanza so don't remember that well. Cool video and fun trip...good luck on growing your channel
@bayflight
@bayflight 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jon, thanks for your comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Old Bonanzas sure are peculiar, you're absolutely right on the fuel system & cowl flaps. You're also spot on about the electric prop auto mode. This is my process: I take off with the prop in auto full forward (2650 RPM). Around 700-1000 ft AGL, I turn the knob 90 degrees counter-clockwise to the detent where it comes back to 2300 RPM. There's a one minute limitation on running at 2650 RPM, which is the reasoning behind bringing the RPM back. Then, I switch the prop into manual so that the governor isn't running all the time and adjust as necessary on climb out and level off into cruise Some early Bonanzas don't even have auto mode, so everything can be done 100% manually - this is how Lew Gage recommends flying. I still use auto mode but eventually I'd like to transition to only using manual! Hopefully that's helpful. I'll make a full video on this soon!

Good job talking through your preflight. I do that even when I’m alone and not recording. Talking out loud validates and confirms “Out Loud” that the settings and readings are as expected. When something is amiss it becomes more apparent since your expectation is not met when you see a wrong reading. Well done.
