In regards to people being on the fence about the game or whatever (in terms of if they enjoy it or not) I think the problem is that so many of us just see untapped potential in the series and it stings to see that it isn't a focus for Platinum. Their idea of improvement seems to just be tripling down on spectacle and gimmicks. There is a lot I enjoyed about Bayo 3 (and I agree the weapons are the most impressive part of the game, they feel extremely unique in a way weapons lacked in Bayo 1 and 2) but at least half the verses in each level feel like some sort of gimmick encounter/mini-game. I am probably over exaggerating it because they stand out so much but my main feeling while playing the game was "god please, just let me punch some dudes and have fun." People can rag on DMC5 all they want for having boring level design and all you do is walk from encounter to encounter, but, I gotta be honest man that is literally what I want from an action game. Everything else is a distraction.

Man, I feel this so much. DMC5 in my opinion is the gold standard for action games because of that. I also really hate the gimmicky void challenges in this game, they were in the other games but it's just annoying to have to seek them out for medals on repeat playthroughs. Just make them basic enemy arenas, it would be less work but also way more fun!

What's so great about Platinum is that they can create extremely deep and complex combat systems AND give us a cherry on top with stuff like the Godzilla fight and the mini train shooting section. Not only that but they're taking real strides to really evolve action games with stuff all like AC Legions and demon slaves. The genre has been stagnant for so long.

You definitely make a good point about scoring, when it comes to DMC. 5 especially. Having done the full platinum for 5 (Which requires S ranking every mission on every difficulty), there is a lot of vagueness over how much varying your play affects your overall Style rating at the end of combat. At some point the Style ranking in combat isn’t concrete enough. And while you can probably notice how mission rankings are determined by the averages of your fights, it’s kinda counterproductive for certain missions to have fights so short they’ll drop your average if you actually partake in them. Making some missions easier to S rank if you *skip* some fights. Bayonetta (And the other Platinum games that share the system like W101), do definitely make it a lot clearer what you should focus on, and how that leads you to improving to get Pure Platinums.
@saaaaaaaaadasda2 жыл бұрын
I don't know if you know that, but aside of problem with fights that better be skipped, there is hidden score multiplier - it's arbitrary different for each mission. In most cases it's fine and require you to get 6000+ points, which is not a problem for a skilled player. But 4-5 mission have multiplier of 0.7-.0.8, don't remember specifics, which means in theese missions, 1-2 for Nero and 3-4 for Dante you need to play like your life is depended on it. So system is arbitrary make player to think that he isn't doing enough, even though previously he played on the same level. I don't know exact reason they switch to this system, there's no time limit and now you can abuse abilities that will grant you SSS style just for goofing around with enemies. And a lot of people will do that, so you don't need to do no damage run which is very hard.

Was pretty on the fence with this game pre-release due to some of the things I’ve heard about Bayo 2 from more die hard fans of the first, including Matthew’s microvids segment on it. It’s such a bummer to see a lot of comments here saying that while it is better than 2, it still suffers from a lot of the same/similar issues. I get why Platinum are continuing to lean into the spectacle given the series’ growing popularity, but it doesn’t sound like what I really want out of a character action game. Sounds fun enough to give it a shot someday but it probably won’t be something I really wanna sink my teeth into like Bayo 1, DMC 3/4/5, God Hand etc.
@saaaaaaaaadasda2 жыл бұрын
Irony of that conclusion that Bayo 1 is leaning towards spectacle compare to other mentioned games, but the core combat is so fleshed out and fun and have so many cool nuances that it is not a minus at all. What im trying to say that it spectacle and depth of the combat work in tandem (95% of the time) and not against each other. Kamiya use DMC 4 as a reference and he basically combined accesibility of a Nero with depth of a Dante. There's literally no need to make it more accessible, it was already accessible as it is, everything else is concessions to the game design so they try to catch that illusional mainstream audience to make more money. Because i don't beleive in a second that they don't want their games to sell like Nier: Automata (6+mil.copies).
@goflondorbumblioni82382 жыл бұрын
You’re right about Bayo 1. That’s the confusing part about the trend of the series from 2 onwards. A lot of more casual players I’ve seen still really enjoy 1. It has more than enough crazy shit to appeal to those people without sacrificing depth for the folks that want it. You even see a lot of these more casual players trying DMC and thoroughly enjoying it despite it being pretty grounded by comparison. What I should’ve said is that, seeing as most people aren’t the type to notice these deeper issues, I understand why Platinum prioritises appealing to them. I hate to be cynical but that’s really where the money is. And like you said, a lot of people now are aware of Platinum through Nier, which wasn’t terribly engaging gameplay-wise imo, but it was simple, and felt pretty good to play. Not exactly what I want from Platinum, however I’m not the core audience in this case. Hopefully they can put something out in the future where we get the best of both worlds. On the plus side, I feel like they’ve released more games that I thought were great than I thought were meh up to this point so I don’t feel too upset about not being super into their stuff anymore.
@saaaaaaaaadasda2 жыл бұрын
@@goflondorbumblioni8238 As you said, sadly in the end it's all about the money. I don't mind if PG is doing different games that more easy, but not their flagship franchise. Madworld was more easy and way less depth than Bayo 1 and i still love this game. Transformers were extremelly underrated by both players and PG themselves for how influential it was. Problem with this accessibility argument is that it's often lowers both entry level and skill ceiling at the same time, so it's hurting depth and longvelity of the games in the end. I don't even talk about artistic integrity here. It's good that Souls series for example have a Call Of Duty sales, meaning that both players and dev's have the same goals, no one is sacrificing anything, everyone happy. Logical conclusion with any series would be that you have your base target audience that you made you new entires for, so i don't think that experienced fans wanted it to be compromised or streamlined, people concede on this that theese changes need to be made to lure more new people in, even if it's not always works. I also bothered by the fact that PG games are turning into amalgamation of mechanics you already seen dozen times before, using Bayonetta as a mother of sorts. Almost every new game have some sort of Witch Time/Slow-mo, nerfed parry on the joystick, copy-pasted dodge offset whatever it fits the game or not, undercoocked mediocre RPG elements (Transformers, AC, Automata, BF) wink attack (Transformers, AC, Automata, Bayo 3), double jump, always kick/punch/shoot system or heavly/slow, dodge system where the only thing changes is animations and how much you allowed to spam it or not. Current trend i guess is summon/kaiju stuff, im affraid that Project GG will also be about it. Just look at the first 4 released games made by PG, just how different they were - Madworld, Infinite Space, Bayonetta 1, Vanquish. Even Anarchy Reigns, which was an online brawler (didn't play it, have no console). Look at the Clover Studios output - Viewtiful Joe, Okami, God Hand. How unique there were, all they have in common that there's action going on with them, and that's knowing that 2 of them is directed by the same guy. Oh i found 1 common thing, you can jump in all of them! Oh wait i forgot, you can't jump in God Hand :)
@goflondorbumblioni82382 жыл бұрын
@@saaaaaaaaadasda I’ve actually been thinking about your first point over the past couple days. About why I still love Madworld, MGR, Vanquish and such despite being from a dev like Platinum. At least for me, It’s because there’s less expectations there. They aren’t follow ups to a deep, challenging character action game. I also miss those more experimental Clover/early Platinum days. I haven’t played it yet but from what I’ve seen and heard, I think Astral Chain kinda feels like something they would’ve made early on or even back when they were Clover, even if it does recycle some ideas. I’d love to see them keep making somewhat more unique games like this in the future. I really do wish more developers would have this discussion about accessibility. Games like Bayo 2 and 3 or a lot of recent fighting games (probably tons of other examples too) give the impression that they see it as very black and white when it isn’t. It’s not exactly the same thing, but I remember in Matthew’s latest video on context sensitivity he references the success of the Soulsborne games and Monster Hunter World to illustrate the point that games that don’t hold your hand can be successful. Those games have simpler combat than a Bayo, DMC, God Hand etc. but I think you can make a similar argument here as well. Everything we’re saying has already been said before and yet it still feels like something that a lot of developers haven’t quite grasped. I think I’ve just been talking in circles in these comments but yeah depth doesn’t necessarily have to be sacrificed in order to make a game more accessible.
@saaaaaaaaadasda2 жыл бұрын
@@goflondorbumblioni8238 There's basically 3 problems: 1) Accessibility often overlaps with difficulty and intergral parts of the game design, there's so much you can do before you start sacrificing gameplay intergity. it easy to say just add easy/accessibility option but, again tired example i know, Souls series where the game is not designed with this approach in mind and/or dev's are not obligated to add them. Good example is Bayo 1 where you have 5 difficulty modes, 2 of them intentionaly easy-peasy and one moderately difficult on a first playthough, Hard and NSIC give you choice whatever you want Witch Time in your gameplay or not. Streets of Rage 4 that have a lot of difficulties while not sacrificing idea of specials that use your hp that you can restore by hitting enemies, you can die even on easiest difficulty if you just spam them and get hit. Your right about the fact that this discourse is coming in circles and i don't know what else to add other than not every game should be for everyone. If games are art, all art is not for everyone and should not be. Also there's weird nonsense going on about people with disabilities, where many view them as a sad puppies that need to be pitied and give them participation trophies all the time. It thought that they just want to live a normal life and when it comes to gaming not be limited by whatever ailment they have. Accessibility controllers like Xbox one is a way to go here, hell there even been a program that allows you to use voice commands to control the game, GlovePie, i use it to do some cool stuff with Wii Remote. 2) Dev's wanted to make morey money out of their product, which they rightfully deserve, but they often think that consessions always make them sell better, not a lie but definetely not truth either. It look's like a coin toss at best. It saddens me, but looking at Clover Studios and PG early output, it look's like expression about starving artist is true. Looks like indie devs are the ones that didn't have this dilemma, because unless we talking about intentional walking simulators, challenge is often higher than in many high-budget games and they often get updates on extra diffiulty modes for free. There no big publishers that breathing in their neck. 3) Game journalists that are have connections and can raise meaningful questions and discussions often don't do that, in fact it looks like they either indifferent or hate gaming, because they failed to get into "real" journalism. Can you remember any interview with Platinum that actually raised some meaningful questions on depth and difficulty discussions or something like that? I don't remember either. I have more meaningful and interesting discussions in yt commentaries than theese journo's have interesting articles in their lifetime.

As for requirements, NSIC is more lenient on verses mostly, youve got plenty of options to get pureplats easily and as a whole i do think that it is much better balanced than bayo2 was due to all the systems actually tying together rather than just 1 thing(Umbran Climax) being the powerhouse that topped all.

Nothing makes sense. The combat is a departure from the usual and is flat out messier, and the game looks uglier than the preceding ones. That said, having poured 175 hours into the game it's my favourite bayonetta to date. The weapon variety blows the other two games right out of the water, and honestly demon slave is just really fun to use. It's some of the most fun I have had in an action game. Good for you, man. Glad you enjoyed it. I can see that they respect the franchise and that this definitely wasn't a cash grab (two points that are unfortunately not a given). For me, even the weapon variety wasn't enough to save it. Hell, I even prefer the first one's guns, skates and sword than anything in the third one. I would have a softer opinion if it was just a case of me not liking 3's toys as much (and not just the toys but the enemies, their animations, the clarity of the combat), but I'm not an action game enthusiast, so the overall package matters more to me anyway. And 3's Bayonetta, imo, just isn't Bayonetta. I can see that they tried, but they fucked it up bad. There are multiple points I could use to illustrate my frustration, but the most obvious for me was the ending dance. That "let's dance, boys" in the end of the first game was such a god damn triumphant cherry on top of one of the best games I've played. What do we get in the third? A fucking embarassment. The action cutscenes and QTEs are also severely lacking both in gameplay and direction. Bayonetta has both over the top action and tasteful sexiness in an incredible combination, with clever and fluid camera angles and editing. Bayonetta 3 is just a blob of fireworks with some mandatory butt or boob shots squeezed in. Lastly, the art direction and color palette in general is just inferior to the first one. Now that I put my thoughts down, I realize I like Bayonetta 3 even less than I thought I did! God damn it, sorry for getting gradually all fired up and throwing a wall of text at you. Creativity of the weapons is undeniable but after 90 hours with the game I just feel a bit burnt on it. Most big enemies just require spamming Witch-time + demon slave to defeat. Gomorrah's bite is invaluable and can topple the biggest enemies easily, and I found that the Wartrain pretty much decimates everything and also acts as free slo-mo when planning the route. Combine this with a ton of minigames that break up the gameplay and a terrible final act/story and I just feel exhausted coming back to Bayo 3's story mode. @matthewmatosisextra2 жыл бұрын
To be clear, it's really Bayonetta 1 which is acting as a wall here. I'm pretty confident I could pure platinum TW101 and enjoy the vast majority of that process. If I recall correctly I've already pure plat several chapters without restarts. It doesn't make sense to do it before Bayo 1 though. My reaction times aren't terrible but they're definitely not my strong suit which makes Bayo more difficult. I'd love to cover both games with commentaries but it would take at least six months of work each, which is very hard to justify right now.

I don't mind the rants from time to time. As someone who's usually sitting in a similar position, it can be frustrating to know that you may not ever see another game with design sensibilities that match your preferences. It hurts to see entire design philosophies fall into obscurity. To extend an olive branch from the other side of the gaming ethos, I was a massive fan of Runescape's design in the early-mid 2000's before the creators were pushed out of the company, but with the introduction of the freemium model, the decline of the genre as a whole, and the overall amount of money it takes to craft an MMO, I know I'll never see another game like it ever again.

I am reaching 200 hours in playing Bayonetta. I am not very good at this game, but I've got to say the camera is not growing on me. Actually it is the biggest gripe I have against this game beside its insane reaction time requirement. The camera in Bayonetta is pretty wild and likes to spin on its own will. When fighting 4 cats or 3 joys, the last thing I need is the camera spins them out of my vision. Although enemies don't attack off-screen, they do attack when a tiny part of their body slides into the camera. It is hard enough to read and dodge when they are fully inside the camera, it is quite frustrating when they initiate their attacks when they are only partially on camera. Also, they don't cancel their attacks after the camera decides to spin them out. Of course you can blame me for not remembering an enemy has already started his attack, but for games like Bayonetta where it is already hard enough to keep up with the enemies who are on screen, remembering that there are enemies who are off-screen are attacking is again, frustrating. There are two verses in Bayonetta that constantly make me wanna uninstall the game, one is when you fight a bunch of giants underwater, the other is when you fight three cats on the road. (I actually did uninstall the game after numerous platinum tries on Road 666) Not zooming out and giving you the full vision of the road, expecting the player to keep track of three cats while remembering the order of the cars are quite obsessive for an encounter design. And the camera spins back and forth like a drunkard, point to whichever angle it feels like. One more thing I want to address the camera system is that, modern action game camera like Bayonetta and Devil May Cry really gets stale fast. Imaging watch a movie with only one camera work. Replaying Final Fantasy 7 recently makes appreciate all the different angles the camera has to offer. It is just more curated. Game designers can look at each static camera, tweak the environment, lightning, enemy placement, etc. Personally, I would love RE4 has a hybrid camera when you explore you have these beautiful RE fixed camera, but when you start to aim you change to over the shoulder angle.

Gameplay-wise, just like with Bayo 2, this game fixes some problems and adds a couple more. The weapons in this game are fantastic and Demon Slaves at the very least deserve praise for being such a bold and creative idea. Story-wise (and the truth is a lot of fans are more casual and in it for the story/characters), I see why people were disappointed. I think this compulsion from a lot of fans to try to dunk on people who were disappointed by the ending is very strange.
@saaaaaaaaadasda2 жыл бұрын
What problems do you think it adds, outside of obvious camera problems and the fact that it's clearly not optional. Also dont get what you said about the fans, which fans. Ghey ones that made up non existing romance between bayo and jeanne, or what do you meant.

It's really funny how Platinum/Kamiya looked at DMCV and said "Yeah let's do this too." Multiple characters for certain chapters (and you can't choose freely on replay) Boring environment and level design And first and foremost: A shitty ass story with a terriblev ending that retroactively makes the plot of prior games worse not to mention the whole "multiverse" thing makes everything so fucking lame with no stakes like what's with this trend seriously? Is it really that hard to just do a comprehensible, well paced story with characters that are defined by certain tropes like DMC3? Though now that i think about Bayonetta had a crazy story since the first game really but still. I laughed out loud like "Kamiya just sabotaged the fucking franchise what a madlad".

I really liked the story in the first game and falled in love with the pantheon it's something makes more sense in successive playthroughs. I also think they kinda found a good way to extend upon on the ending in the second game. But the third one... well it's obvious they put more weight into fanservice than fleshing out the world building. I can also agree on your opinion on DMCV It might be popular to hardcore players with it's fleshed out combat system (not counting in V) but it offers very little variety within its campaign. It's mostly just a colletion of tubes that lead into arena fights in boring samey looking environments. The resident evil inspired leveldesign that even existed in the first half of 4 is completely gone. I believe the only partly interesting chapter was the one where you had to utilize the arm protesis mechanic of Nero and had different ways to go.

This game is saved by Demon Slave and new creative weapons, everything else is sucking major spheres, Bayo characterisation, missed opportunity with a lot of characters, nonsensical plot, unexplained style shift, inconsistent presentation, new enemies are weaker mechanically and thematically, Viola is underwhelming, a lot of missing things that should be there and been before in previous games, in the game that is in development for 5 years if not more. Bayo 3 is good but so many things was cutted, absolutely horrible story and "monkey see monkey do" approach of bandwagoning on DMC 5.
