2:24:00 "I have a pet theory that game dev is closest to animation." Game dev is closest to architecture. You design something with certain purposes in mind, but people will interact with it in unpredictable ways. It's a space that people will explore however they choose, similar to a game. Also, both architecture and game design live at the intersection of many different disciplines, including artistic ones and scientific ones. Making something great typically requires collaboration between experts in many different fields. I actually got a little book recently called 101 Things I Learned in Architecture School. I highly recommend it for game designers; there are lots of surprisingly relevant nuggets of wisdom in there.

In terms of the physical processes that the work goes through, I think matthew is correct. He's also correct in the specific instance of story driven games, as animations are almost (Fantasia exists) always narrative works. I agree with you in everything you said though, architecture resembles games more in its structure, though it holds less potential and sees less use as a medium of storytelling.

You're one of the very, very few people who can analyze games without separating narrative and theming from the gameplay. So many "essayists" solely talk about a game's narrative in a literal sense without really knowing what makes a game a game, and how/if the narrative complements said game. The result are some hyper-pretentious videos with titles bordering on clickbait, that are 5 hours long and ultimately say nothing. Even your longest review is still incredibly concise, structured well and down to earth, without any gimmicks, like a lo-fi aesthetic or whatever else people use to establish a brand.

I appreciate the attitude towards reviewing long games, trying to engage with them as the developer intended. I remember seeing some Breath of the Wild reviews where the reviewer had forced themselves to play as much of it as they could in a week, got totally burned out on it then complained as if it was the game's fault.

The best thing Matt did in regards to BotW was to take his time for the review. I put in like 200+ hours into that game when it came out so i was absolute done with it in every way but when Matts review came out long after the launch period it actually felt refreshing to just see, hear and think about the game again. Matthews attitude as you described just feels honest and real that way to me.

1:56 Matt mentions he'll never do an MGSV review, but I do wish he'd talk about the game on stream sometime. He's never given his thoughts before since he may have made a video on it, and for all these years I've always wondered what like the one sentence summary of thoughts is lol
@specknacken6507

He said something like "Is there anything to say about Big Boss after playing MGSV?" years ago (forgot which stream it was sorry) so there's that i guess lol And to be honest i would be surprised if a one sentence summary even from him is more than just "Movement great, Open World wasted, Story what?" and that's it. That's sort of the consensus i get after all these years after release. Can't even imagine what a "hot take" would look like (some "The actual Phantom Pain is supposed to be ultra meta you dummies don't you get it?") because there really isn't much to talk about it nowadays. It's sort of like DMCV though that game at least had a complete story even if it was very very shitty and awful lol.

I love DMC1 and 3 for more than just the crazy combos you know? Hence the comparison to MGSV where people usually praise the gameplay but are kinda iffy on the story and stuff. And i'm sorry but i just can't take Vergil fans seriously anymore after his character (what was there outside of just giving Dante himself more depth) got even worse lol. I'm just sorry.

The discussion about how to gain experience with game dev around 20 minutes, I super agree that it's worth it to learn things correctly and take your time when you're starting out. Im really sick of how often game devs parrot the "just finish something" advice, it mostly just leads people to half ass and not thoroughly learn or improve, or to develop an extremely narrow skill set that's only relevant to making games quickly. If your goals are to make longer larger games, you have to learn to do that properly, and making small games won't teach you how
@vj7248
@vj7248 Жыл бұрын
I see what you mean but, what your describing is more of a product of how bad Waterfall development is, and why Project Scope is so important. If a project scope is small, a small timeframe will be expected. However, if a project scope is big, obviously cramming it into a small timeframe will always result poorly. In the context of Waterfall development, a working product only exists at the end. In your example, someone just gamejam rushes a game to be 'finished', resulting in something halfassed. This is basically what entire videogame industry does for pre-release development. But then, lets use that same situation, place it into any agile or iterative development cycle.... You rush and make a halfassed game.... But, its not the release version. It is meant as a starting point to build off from. To take a pause and think 'what should be added, removed, expanded upon or fixed?'. This workflow is vital for making bigger projects, as you sculpt a working product rather than just hope it will work in the end. So, making smaller games is actually good practice once realizing that with iteration, a big game is just a series of small games combined together. .... Rather than trying to rush to make a big game into a singular smaller game, which is what waterfall method results in.
@fullmontis
@fullmontis Жыл бұрын
To be fair, I agree with that saying. I feel like there are a lot of things that one learns towards the end of a project (or even after release) that you really can't predict unless you actually finish something first. It's not about rushing out something as quickly as possible, it's more about reducing the moving part and learning how they work really well and taking your time with it, so that you can release something small but finished and polished in a fraction that it would take to finish even a medium sized project. Once you have something out of the door you can sell it and help you support as you develop a larger project.
@morganlak4337
@morganlak4337 Жыл бұрын
Sure, but two things are important to consider 1. Your strategy hinges on absolute beginners who know nothing about game dev having the foresight to know what proper scope is, when even experienced devs struggle with it 2. You're assuming small projects will neatly translate to larger games when they mostly do not. Part of keeping scope small is limiting the work you do to be within skills you already have or know. If you branch out beyond that, you don't know what your scope is. So if you want to grow and improve, you're going to have to overscope and bite off more than you can chew a few times. Beginners will overscope no matter what, so emphasizing finishing projects just makes them half ass things as soon as they get into territory they don't have the skills for. If you could hypothetically do a perfect linear progression of perfectly scoped games, yeah I agree your strategy would work. It's just not how improvement happens typically though. Good strategy for experienced developers though
@morganlak4337
@morganlak4337 Жыл бұрын
@@fullmontis I agree! That's not how people talk about it though and beginners get the wrong idea. The proof is all over the internet, tons and tons of solo devs rushing out projects half assed and tons of KZbinrs repeating over and over again to "just finish something". I agree with your strategy though
@morganlak4337
@morganlak4337 Жыл бұрын
Ultimately I am more upset with "just finish something" than I am with the focus on small games. Small games are cool and good and you learn plenty by doing them. Large games just require a bunch of shit small games don't though, so rushing to learn all that stuff is counter productive. Rushing to learn how to make small games is counter productive. Don't rush. That's my real point

You might find it hard to believe, but I actually like listening to you stream just as much as watching your videos. I’m not gonna say the quality is the same, but it’s great listening to these while I play games. It’s enjoyable, like chatting with a friend over discord while you’re playing different games. Whereas your videos are enlightening, like listening to an insightful lecture. Anyways, I’m not gonna tell you that you should start making videos again. Although it could be a good idea to switch gears and work on a video if you ever run into a wall while developing. Taking a short break from a creative project can be really beneficial rather than trying to brute force your way through the whole thing (not that you’re necessarily doing that). Ideas flow better when you’re not forcing it, and I find I do some of my best creative work after returning from a break, or after working on something else for a bit. In any case, thanks for the stream as always.

As someone who loves the designed limitations of old RE games and actually finds them chunky and satisfying, I really recommend playing 7 with mouse and keyboard. Playing with a controller feels a lot more like an annoying hindrance than a cool design thing. Is the game balanced around controller input and is therefore easier with mouse and keyboard? Yes, but I don't see the appeal of going through a game that is hard due to annoying reasons and not thoughtfully designed ones. Btw RE7 is my game of the year so far lol
