Bayou Sauvage NWR - Trails in Louisiana Near New Orleans

My recent hike (8-23-18) of the 5.7 miles of trails at Bayou Sauvage NWR. One of the last remaining marsh areas adjacent to Lakes Pontchartrain and Borgne, the refuge contains a wide variety of wildlife habitat, including bottomland hardwoods, freshwater, and brackish marshes, lagoons, canals, borrow pits, and natural bayous. An important stopover​ along the Mississippi Flyway, these diverse habitats meet the needs of approximately 340 bird species throughout the year. The American alligator is also a common sight on the refuge.

Nice trail videos! I lived in Louisiana for a long time. Check out the Port Hudson battlefield trails too. Hike with Mike suggested your channel.

There’s a cool nature trail in Mandeville down past the Castine center about a mile and a half on the left if you’re interested in checking it out

Nice job, Gilligan. I liked the wildlife you were able to capture on video. It would be nice to sit and watch. It would have been so much nicer if the trail along the boardwalk would be better maintained.

Yes it’s a great trail for viewing wildlife. I noticed the lack of maintenance too. They usually keep those NWR trails in better shape!

I have a question. Don't laugh! I'm planning on hiking in LA. Do Gators jump out and attack humans? For a person that has never seen one outside of a zoo it looks scary to hike there.

Ok sorry I did laugh, but only a little 😆 No alligators are like most wild animals and have a natural tendency to avoid humans. Where are you planning to hike?
