Sherburne WMA is located in the Morganza Flood way system of the Atchafalaya Basin. LDWF owns Sherburne WMA (11,800 acres) but manages the area as one unit along with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge (15,220 acres)
With numerous multi-use trails, there are miles of trails to explore in this area. I only hiked two trails and look forward to returning in the cooler months to hike some more.

I live in Louisiana too. It’s kinda disappointing that we don’t really have good hiking. I’ve been thinking about getting a kayak to run around in some of the bayous. There are some pretty cool areas around me that would make some nice camp sites.

This looks like it could be a great place to hike in cooler & dryer weather and once it drys out from Hurricane Barry. Thanks for letting us know about it.

You are braver than me. I have been hunting that area for 30 years, and no way would I go into that area this time of year. But if your interested, the south side of the management area the has better hiking trails. After hunting season in January is your best bet. No hunters and no snakes. Thanks for the video.

Thank you so much for showing us this part of the refuge. We were thinking about going this week (1st week of August, 2022), but will definitely wait until it gets cooler and dryer. It's been raining in the area every day for a couple of weeks now, so the conditions there are probably the same as you found them in the video. Wildlife management will not allow cars in the refuge, so it's either hiking or ATVing.

There is a nature trail in Sherburne WMA. Don't know the distance, but I hunted it during the deer season. Seems to be high and dry. Happy nature trailing.

Thanks for sharing. Last wma areas we were in were pretty rough. We were in Arkansas though. Full watch, big thumbs up and a subscribe.

Louisiana Hikes…. Have you hiked the Indian Bayou Loop Trails? It’s across the Atchafalaya River from Sherburne WMA? I’m about to go check them out. I may try to replicate your style and video it but we shall see.

Man hard to say. Maybe a couple of miles. I need to go back in the winter and do the whole trail and get a good gpx track

I’ve lived in the northeast my entire life. We’re moving to Louisiana soon and I’m a little nervous about the snakes and gators. Up here it’s bears, maybe a coyote or something. What’s your advice for me before I start my hiking out there?
@EricHeber
@EricHeber 3 жыл бұрын
Not much to offer for advice but keep your eyes open. I have almost stepped on a snake before. I haven’t had many encounters with snakes or gators really. Just be aware they are around

This is the jungle compared to anywhere north of here. The humidity, snakes, and mosquitoes will ruin your day, fast. South Louisiana is very very lush and green due to the humidity.
