😆😆😆 You acquired severe GAS. Relating to your last videos, this was to expect 😆😆😆 The Z6 II is pretty good. But as D850 replacement, wouldn’t suit the Z7 II better? Talking of megapixels... Tiny birds on perches and so... I predict: you’ll gonna miss it. - I also suffer of GAS, I am kinda “Mr. GAS” himself, but for this time I wait for the Z9 🤩. No doubt about it, for video the Z6II is light years ahead. D780 is DSLR + Z6 (but unfortunately not Z6II)

It was July 2020 that I purchased my first Z6. I had read a lot of articles and seen a bunch of videos all telling me how Nikon had missed the mirrorless boat to Sony and Canon. They were all probably right, but I had been shooting/using Nikons since my teens so I had to try out a Z6. About a month after I started selling all my Nikon DSLRs along with the F lens collection. Followed to buying all the Z primes I could afford. Nikon may have missed the mirrorles boat back then, but they sure caught up fast. I would not trade my Zs for anything. It was like starting photography all over again. Thanks so much for your post.

Makes sense. If I already owned a lot of high-end, pro-level Nikon lenses, then I would definitely stick with Nikon. But all I own is the enthusiast-grade lenses that I would be tempted to replace, and therefore I'm not confined to Nikon. For that reason, I plan on switching to Canon.

A decade ago, I worked for one of the largest photo retailers in Canada. My group was 8 people in industrial sales. Without exception, every one of us was a Nikon shooter. We had access to all the brands, and we all chose Nikon. All of our law enforcement customers were Nikon shooters. Some of the reasons had to do with ergonomics as you mentioned. The menu systems of Nikons was, and still is, superior to every other manufacturer. I would like to know who the idiot was at Canon that put the on/off switch on the left side of the camera? And as someone who wears glasses, the high eye-point of the Nikon viewfinder allows me to see all of the information. I love your videos and have just discovered you because I am making the switch from my Nikon D750 to the Nikon Z6II. Thanks for the great info!

I began my transition to mirrorless over 5 years ago now, with a Fuji X system. I found that my Nikon DSLRs more and more stayed in the cupboard. The Fuji worked well for the most part, though I disliked a lot of things about the camera. Certainly, clients were happy with the images I produced and I seemed to sell more stock (for magazines and books) probably because I was carrying the camera more. When the Z cameras debuted it was a no-brainer to grab a couple of Z6s and a lens or two. I'm now ready to trade my last DSLR (a D800) and most of my F-mount glass for the Z9.

Change is hard. Kudos to you for seeing the need and addressing it. I like photography and in general I am camera agnostic. I use what interest me (if I can afford it). I have been mirrorless since way before it made much sense. My last DSLR was a Pentax and that was stolen (along with most of the lenses) and I went mirrorless after that. I currently go back and forth between M43 and a Canon R6. I’ve had many surgeries on various body parts and I prefer carrying the M43 stuff. But you’re right that the Canon autofocus is magical. So I find myself using that a lot these days. Nikon makes great stuff and nothing wrong with sticking with the brand you know and have a lot invested in. At the end of the day you’ve only got to make yourself happy.

Like you, I began using a camera late in life (2011). However, it was a mirrorless camera on loan. It could fit into my shirt pocket. Please note: "mirrorless" is a broad term in camera-speak. Once the bug bit me, I continued to use loaners. My first loaner upgrade was a Nikon P510 (another mirrorless). Then in 2016 I was given a budget to order what I thought would be a serious upgrade. Alas, my dream Nikon D810 cost my entire budget! I settled for the Nikon D5500 DSLR and some nice glass by Sigma, Tamron, and Nikon. I continue to use the D5500 loaner when I shoot for its owner (USGS & NPS). When I bought my own camera, I chose the Olympus EM5 Mark ii (a mirrorless interchangeable lens system). Yes, Yes, it's a crop sensor and you are a full-frame advocate. But I mainly shoot landscapes and plants and both usually sit still for me and I can get pretty close when needed. Only lately have I started to shoot wildlife with enthusiasm. I can see the advantage of the cropping power of a full frame camera. Like you, I do not have an unlimited wallet to experiment in glass. Therefore, if I upgrade to full frame I may go back to a DSLR for budget reasons. But it will be a camera with a quality video capability. Thank you for what you do! You are an inspiration!

Hello, Josh. Just a few things: 1. Before I started my bird photography adventure this past February, I only owned a basic entry-level mirrorless from Sony (a3000). When I got infected with _bacillus birdphotographii_ I had to make an important decision and very thoroughly think it through: DSLR or mirroless. With my Sony I would often get frustrated with how long it took the camera to 'wake up' from sleep mode, and also how long it took for it to turn on, and that was back in my landscape photography days. This obviously prompted a red light to go off in my head. That was a huge no-no for bird photography or any other action photography genre, really. 2. The battery life, as you mentioned, is really really poor in mirrorless cameras (although I imagine this will change for the better with time). On the Sony I would get like 400 shots tops, and that's in single frame and AF-S or single servo for you Canon guys, so obviously on AF-C and burst mode you would get much lower numbers still. 3. There were also no reasonably priced telephoto lenses for my Sony (E mount). So while looking for a budget option, I came across this Nikon D3500, the last Nikon DSLR ever in their entry-level lineup (D3xxx). On paper, you get 1550 shots per charge, it comes with (this particular set because you can also get body only, body+standard 18+55 or the latter + 70-300 VR which I got) DX 70-300 mm VR lens, and most importantly for me: there is no lag or delay when you wake it up from the sleep mode or turn it on (you can easily imagine how important this is for action photography). And on top of that it has lag-free, flicker-free and energy-free optical viewfinder. What's not to like? 4. Also, all the buttons are on the right-hand side now, just like Z6 or those other fancy mirrorless cams. Video record button is right next to the shutter release so easily accessible. 5. Ok so I don't want to come off as a sort of D3500 envoy but I really recommend it for people on a budget, or simply not willing to invest serious sums of money initially, before they decide if bird/wildlife photography is something for them. 6. Re: D850 vlogging. I'm not sure if it's the same with these high-end Nikon DSLRs but in my D3500 I found that, provided the subject is relatively still (doesn't leave your depth of field), I get flawless results with AF-S rather than AF-F for video. Maybe it's not a perfect analogy, but I guess you could liken it to using vibration reduction (optical image stabilization for you non-Nikonians) on a tripod: the camera (or lens in my case) goes bonkers because it's trying to adjust for movement that isn't there. Similarly for videoing yourself talking to the camera: AF-F (AF-C equivalent for video) goes nuts because it's trying to compensate for your movement that isn't actually there. Try using AF-S next time and see if it helps. I know it's not the best solution but it works. Best regards! Sub!

great feedback Tatra. the D3500 is a fantastic camera and it is great for video. the Z line of cameras are just more intuitive when it comes to video. The video on DSLR requires you to pull away from the viewfinder and line up the shot with the back screen which meant I was losing a lot of quick moving bird opportunities. Now I just set up the shot via photo mode and flip the back switch to start video all while still looking through the video. and when I want to go back to stills, I simply flip the switch and keep my eye in the viewfinder. Anyway. Yes, the D3500 is a great place to start and wonderful for battery life and there are a lot of options for lenses.

I appreciate your thoughts on the switch, and it's a bummer that you need to preempt negative feedback over making a sort of decision like this. I love my Nikon DSLRs, and there's definitely some magic in the shooting experience with them for me, but the moment I snapped my first shots with a mirrorless camera, I knew I couldn't go back. They definitely have room to grow, but they certainly hold more potential for the future of photography than DSLRs ever could. But I don't think I see myself letting go of my DSLRs anytime soon either, even though they're mostly shelf pieces now :). Thanks for your contribution, love your shots!

Very interesting video. The parallel between your decision making and my own is very close. Two years ago I had a D850 and a D500. I wasn't using them for video - I tried but found them too limited as far as video went. I therefore sold the 500 and bought a Z6. I soon found I was using this new camera almost all the time and almost had to force myself to use the D850 - despite its phenomenal qualities. By the summer (2020) we knew it was just a matter of time before the 6ii & 7ii would be announced so decided to sell the 850 while it still had good value (I got almost what I paid for it) and ordered a Z7ii - mine arrived the day they started shipping in the UK. Absolutely love this camera and vey frustrated when I see the way the Nikon knockers harp on about their perceived deficiencies with the autofocus system. Having said that, I am blown away by what I have seen and read about the capabilities of the Z9 and am looking forward to getting my hands on one. The one feature both the D850 and D500 had which I really miss on the Z6 &7ii is the ability to light up the back-buttons when shooting in bad light and am delighted to see that this is back on the Z9. I know this is going to be an expensive acquisition and, in truth, I really can't justify it but, I am in my early seventies so this will possibly be the final camera I buy to see me out, so why not get the best and enjoy it while I can!!! Also, absolutely love the quality of the Z-glass, in fact, when I bought the 50mm f1.8 and saw how much better it was than the F-mount 50mm f1.4 I was totally convinced that I have made the right decision to go down the Z route. The video qualities and capabilities are the icing on the cake and I certainly intend to start to make more use of these in 2022. Keep rolling your videos out, many of us over in the UK really enjoy them.

Hi Brian, I think that story is rather common amongst us Nikon users. The D850 and D500 are such wonderful cameras and we all wanted to be sure we were getting a real upgrade by switching to the Z platform. I agree that it is certainly worth the move. The video capabilities are fantastic and I continue to be amazed at how easy it is to get good clean footage. It was such a pain trying to make videos with the D850. That's exactly why I love my Nikon Z6 II. First I thought the autofocus of my D500 is unbeatable. But doing the right adjustment and a little bit of practice you can get the same hitrate. As I'm doing photography 99%, battery life of the Z6 II ist good enough. Never had issues with drained battery when I was out in the field. When you said in the past that you did not need mirrorless, you were not wrong. At that time you did not need it. Now the need changed because video is more important to you due to KZbin, and that's fine. Lots of people still use DSLRs because they fill their needs and perhaps a mirrorless doesn't necessarily. I love my D810, and while I am fascinated with the Z6 II, I would not use to replace, I'd probably use both for different things. But as I am trying to be wise with my money, I will not do that until they are available second hand for a much cheaper price.

Josh. Good video. Quite a few of your points for changing are videography based rather than photography based. All are valid points. I do not do videos. I'm sticking with my D850's and my f glass for now. I'll wait for the Z9 before I consider mirrorless. The current Z's, based on everything I have read, are limited in their action focusing. Plus, using the FTZ allegedly slows focusing with the f glass. I hope the FTZ adapter is refined by the time that camera is readily available. I, like you, can't afford replacing all my f glass and would still want use it in my eventual transition to mirrorless.
@BayouJosh3 жыл бұрын
I’ve got to say, I’ve noticed zero fall off in auto focus performance with the FTZ adapter. And yes, you’re right 90% of my decision was based on video. Although the image quality is quite good with the Z6.

I had a fit for a year and a half until a wave hit both of us at the beach Christmas week. It killed my camera. I upgraded to the z6 II. When the z6 came out I didn't want it because it didn't have a dual card slot or connections for the battery grip. When the z6 II came out I started paying attention to it. After my camera died I had to decide if I was going to switch back to Canon, get the d780 or the z6 II. I only have 2 lenses right now but I couldn't afford to sell them and switch to Canon and then buy new lenses. Nikon has shown me that they are slowly keeping up. I see more firmware updates in the future that will make them even better. So far I really like my z6 II. I'm still learning the focus system. I know there are wedding photographers that prefer the z6 for video because you can switch back and forth so easily. And the files are great. When the prices drop on the z6 II you might want to check it out. The focus system is better and it will continue to get updates. The z6 probably won't see many more improvements through updates. I want the 200-500 lens but there's rumors of a z mount 200-600 coming out soon. I hope so. I will hold off and wait for it.

Your videos have a very relaxed feeling about them. Nicely done. I started shooting mirrorless as a press photographer because I was required to shoot stills AND video on many of my assignments and one camera that could do both just made a lot of sense. However, if not for the video requirement I would have been happy to stick with my Nikon D700, which I did for sports. Unless you own a high-end mirrorless, I think most DSLR's are better for fast action but the minute you need video, well, you made the right choice.

I have been shooting my Z6ii for a few months, it is a very good camera if you need to shoot mammals in low light or shoot wildlife videos. 2 points that let it down: you can't map the back buttons like a D850-500, I ended up using the U1-U2-U3 for custom controls. The second and biggest issue is the pin point focus is only available in AF-S. The smallest square in AF-C is TOO BIG so you miss focus a lot if the subject is not big enough in the frame
@BayouJosh3 жыл бұрын
I've noticed that about the AF-c and single point. It hasn't been a deal breaker thus far even with the smallest of birds. Notice in this video the Chickadee and warbler images. all shot on single point in AF-C mode. I Kind of just pump the AF button like I did with the DSLR in those situations where I'm shooting through branches and leaves.

A Z6/Z7 combination (esp. Gen II) offers the best of both worlds. The Z6 excels at video and high ISO performance, and like you mentioned, generates fantastic image quality. The resolution of the Z7/Z7II allows for cropping, which is cheaper than an exotic prime. What I like most is the continuity between the two bodies; everything is in the same place on both models. I still have my D500 but rarely use it now.

I don’t have a battery issue with my Sony a7III. Not saying you should switch, I’m just saying that your statement on battery life on mirrorless cameras sounded like a blanket statement for all mirrorless cameras. I believe mirrorless cameras are the future, and I think you’ll be overall glad you made the switch. Nikon mirrorless cameras seem great to me. If they had a mirrorless option when I got into photography, I probably would’ve gotten a Nikon instead of a Sony.

I've had the Z6 for about a year. The subject tracking is gimmicky and doesn't work well especially on a windy day. As you said you stick to single point or group areas of AF and it works well. And when hand holding a super-telephoto the left hand is cradling the lens while your right hand has access to the controls. Perfect ergonomic design. Also the Z6 is a low light beast!

Similar experience here. Z6 has such good handling. I bought a Z6 to go with my D500. After testing the Z6 for all the things I thought I'd keep the D500 for (action, small wildlife) I found some Z6 AF settings that worked well and preferred the handling of the Z6. Recently sold the D500 and bought a Z6ii as my primary camera and keeping the Z6 as a 2nd body if I don't want to switch lenses. Having the same controls and buttons in the same place is most important for dual body use. Both use XQD (never needed 2nd slot). Have four spare batteries -just in case! Hey Josh awesome content as usual. No need in my opinion to justify your actions because photography/videography is a constant evolution of technique with equipment adaptation. You’re a phenomenal photographer and videographer and I think you would create awesome content if you were using a disposable camera somehow. I do think your journey will ultimately lead you to add an additional camera body so you can video yourself taking photos with your main camera in the Z6 is one of the best video cameras in my opinion. I just purchased a used Z7 on eBay for $1600 and I should get it in Friday and my main intention on using it is for landscape and woodland photography with a sprinkle of wildlife although if I had a 600 mm f4 I probably mainly shoot wildlife like you do. I do think the 45 megapixels could help with being able to crop shots were you were not able to fill the frame with your subject and still maintain a high pixel density for large prints. But honestly no matter what you do I am going to enjoy watching your evolution in photography and videography. It’s not my intent to plug people but your last video I could not help but to draw parallels between yourself and Mark Smith because he is really awesome at delivering a story with his photography and his inept abilities at captivating language to exemplify excellence. You have the very same skill set and he was a Nikon D850 & D500 shooter. If you get a chance, you may want to try renting a D780 and pairing it with the AF-P 70-300 f/4.5-5.6E VR to see how it compares to shooting video with the Z 6 in regards to autofocus performance. The LiveView experience on the D780 is a substantial improvement over the D850 since it's basically a Z 6 sensor in a DSLR body.

I have been thinking about buying a D850 since they are on sale for such a low price now but I have a Z6ii and a lot of Z mount lenses and just from an investment perspective it doesn't make a lot of sense for me to make the DSLR purchase when I only have a few F mount lenses that seem to perform just fine with the FTZ adapters. The Z7/Z7ii also has the same sensor as the D850 so I'm considering just adding one of those to my bag as my higher resolution body. For my use cases a lot of the action related limitations of the Z6ii and Z7ii are not really an issue for me and I agree the AF seems to be just fine with these although it doesn't do everything for us as some of the new competitor cameras. Also about battery life a grip really helps I have the Grip for the Zii cameras and it is great but from what I've read the grip for the Z6/7 is not that great and has no controls it's just a battery holder. Definitely agree with some of the other commenters that said the Battery grip really extends the number of images you can get. With the grip on my Z6ii I can shoot a few thousand images in continuous H mode and only drain the battery 60% not even dipping in to the second battery.
@BayouJosh3 жыл бұрын
Good to know Brian. I’ll likely pick up a grip in the next few months.
@kristianaltmann77213 жыл бұрын
Regarding the battery life changing the monitor usage made a big difference for me. By default the mirrorless cameras switch between display and viewfinder and always draw power regardless of you looking at either one (at least my a6400 and the Z6 do). By changing it to „prefer viewfinder“ with the little button left to the VF it disables both by default and only enables the viewfinder once you get close with your eye. Reviewing images is done in the VF as well if you look into it, otherwise the LCD is used. Maybe this eases your pain a little.

Hi Josh, I have been a Nikon fan since about 1968. I have my original F2, a D810 and a D850. I upgraded from a D5100 to the 810 and 850. The difference is astounding. I had no interest in the current mirror less craze until I asked myself the same question you are asking yourself now. Why on earth do I need a Z9? Each day I am getting further and further behind in the digital world. Have never shot a single frame of video as I do mostly nature photography. Did not see anything worth trying out that was not outrageously priced and over-hyped. Enter the Z9. I am going to try and be patient for six months or so until I see how the Z9 fairs and whether Nikon is serious about fixing a couple of things that I think needs fixing before I take the leap. From what I have seen, this Z9 is the most outstanding camera to date. Just have to see if the production model surpasses the demo model. I get to keep my old glass! What is not to like? In six months maybe blazing fast B memory cards will be reasonably priced. Batteries are expensive but Nikon seems to have been able to do what no one else has done. Make a battery you can use all day and still have power left over. That seems to signal to me that the Z9 is going to be the worlds leader in mirror less cameras in pretty short order. There is my answer in a nut shell. My first and last "Flagship" camera. Loving your content and sense of humor. Keep up the good work!

At that point, my D850 is going in a glass display case like a historical artifact because you’re absolutely right- the D850 is hands down the best DSLR ever built. But alas, all good things come to an eventual end. So then Josh, my next question would be are you planning on going back to high MP body like the z7ii or the z9?

@adamthompson81403 жыл бұрын
@@BayouJosh I hear ya brother. For me, I’m not sure I can live without the high MPs for deep crops. The other thing I think about (and maybe something you consider as well) is the resolving power of my glass. I have the slightly newer little brother to your lens, the 500mm f/4G VR. I’ve looked over the resolving power charts of that lens and for me, shooting on a lower MP body would be doing that lens a disservice. I tested this with Becky in the field. Used my lens on her old D750 and then used her 200-500mm f/5.6 on the same camera. The results in sharpness between the two lenses were nearly identical. The 24MP sensor of the D750 simply didn’t have the resolving power to take advantage of the superior optics of the 500mm f/4. Same experiment between the two lenses used on my D850 and the resolving power of that 45mp sensor exposed a pretty substantial difference in sharpness between the two lenses. Just some food for thought. Great work as always man. Loving these vids and allowing us to get to know you and your family better. Keep the good stuff coming!

Oh man, 8:35, I fully agree. The WB thing is for us NEF shooters no issue, to me the worst thing is: you have no single right hand control over AF modes. I personally prefer the Nikon ergonomics over all others, but that AF mode button on the left side of the F mount is the worst design flaw ever. No problem, if you can configure e.g. the movie button like on the D6 to act like this left AF button, but that’s exclusively to the D6 and I don’t understand why Nikon delivers no firmware upgrades to the other DSLRs enabling this. My workaround: Custom Mode Setting Bank C is configured AF-C available only, AF on shutter button is set to single point, that gives me the opportunity to move the point by joy stick at the same time; f1 setting like so: Group-area AF+AF-On is set the AF-ON button and Auto-area AF is set to Pv. if video is not a concern, the D850 is the way to go. I don't want People to think the Z6II is better at producing images. It is just better for me and my workflow which is heavily based on video.

changed D750 to Z6 ... autofocus, ergonomics, electronic viewfinder, old SLR lenses work great, no more headache with adjustment.

Indeed. I've seen tests where they are rated a hair slower but it is hard to tell considering it is still pretty dang fast.

Another great video Josh, have been subscribed for some time, would like to ask if you think using the adaptor for the f mount lenses on the Z mount mirrorless camera affects the speed of the autofocus ? am looking to go mirrorless eventually using the 500 5.6 pf but am waiting ( and saving for ) the rumored Z9?.

In Z6ii & 7ii you can plug a power bank to have virtually unlimited runtime. In Z6 you can do that via a dummy battery+USB plug, see Henry Hudson's channel, where he posted a video about it around a year ago with links to amazon.
@BayouJosh3 жыл бұрын
I did see people using power banks. That’s good information. I have a few of those and will likely do that.
@andrewsmith31213 жыл бұрын
@@BayouJosh Just make sure it is a PD (power delivery) capable unit, or it will not work to use the camera and battery bank at the same time, and it will just allow charging only if non-PD type.

Hey Man - you are learning! All you need to do now is get rid of those heavy Nikon lenses and get Olympus! Its easier tom carry a few back up batteries for the M1X than a 600mm and a big tripod! Dave from Scotland.

I’m loving your videos, keep up the great work! I’m only really just starting out my journey with full frame, but want to stick with it a little bit longer, the OVF is still what I prefer. That said, the Z6 II is a *very* nice camera and I look forward to seeing your work with it!

Another great video, very informative. However it makes me wanna break out in "Another one bites the dust" by Queen. I agree with everything you said however being mainly landscape photographer I like my D850 for the resolution and the dynamic range. When I do shoot video on my Nikon I use manual focus it is a pain in the Hiney. You need to mention the adapter for f mount lenses.
@BayouJosh3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that D850 is awesome for landscape. You'd be quite surprised how good the Z6 is for that as well. I was very pleased and would argue that it rivals the D850 excluding the higher resolution. (which is tough to see with the naked eye) You only see it when cropped in 100% in lightroom.

Why I love and keep my D750: - real view finder working in off mode safes battery - more than 2 times shots with one battery as the Z cameras - better balance with heavy lenses But...I will buy a Z6ii when I can get a cheap used one.

All Good reasons. However, when you're trying to put 2 wildlife focused videos out a week. that DSLR video is horrible.

I feel kind of spoiled. I started a few years ago on a Nikon D3400 and immediately went to a Z5, which I love. After your canon R5 video though I'm wondering if I should have gone the Canon RP route though. But they're all just tools. So here I am, regardless!

RP doesn't even compare to Z5 (eg. no IBIS). And R5 is so expensive, that I'd be afraid to take it anywhere.

My D5 batteries last forever, I charge usually once or maybe twice a week! I've had the D850 and I've had 3 D500's, but now I have two D5's and I'm very happy with that decision. I even had a D6 for about two weeks and returned it, simply because I did not see enough or much of any improvement. Having said that it was mostly that I didn't see a $3000 difference, because the D6 was better AF wise, but just a tad better. Anyways I've tried the Z6 and a friends Z7 II recently and they just still are not there yet. Maybe a Z9 is in my future but Im very happy with my D5's. I have a 500mm f/4E VR FL and two TC-14E III's that I use on the 500FL and one for the 70-200FL in case I need one on both. I do a lot of wildlife photography and have for about 23 years, but my main job is a photojournalist and the D5 is by far the best camera for what I do.

There's no doubt the image quality from the Z cameras are amazing, but for BIFs there's definitely room for improvement. The CA-F for panning shots the camera's decent but birds or coming straight at you it isn't close to a D500. With the dual processor of the II series I'm hoping a firmware update will move the needle. BTW, there's a battery grip for 99.99 made by Vello at B&H. While not a metal version like the Nikon, if you're looking for extended battery life it's a no brainer.
