Katie and I go on a Hike together. We have a destination in mind. However, we are photographers first and hiking enthusiasts second. Will we make it to the destination? I know one thing. We will get some pretty pictures!

The title is awesome! I showed my wife. You have it good, you both move at the same pace. My wife is a fitness instructor and her idea of hiking is get to the top as fast you can, take one phone pic at the top, check the step counter, drink water and head down. Meanwhile, I am stopping at every brook, laying on my belly like Josh in the video. So now-a-days she teaches classes on Saturdays and I hike. Good stuff as always.

Omg loved this video, too funny. Had to get my husband to watch it, as I am the one slowing us down all the time on our hikes to take pictures. He definitely had a chuckle! Most of the time he is fascinated at all the little things I spot to take pictures of. As a photographer your eyes are always looking for that little bird or how the colour or texture of the bark looks on a particular tree. Really a million different things…… so many fascinating things to discover if you just slow down to see them!

....Or ANY other types of photographers - UNLESS they're willing to assist you with your compositions and be patient with you at the same time. I've found that having someone aside you (me) is that you're always worried about where that other person is...Is he/she safe? How far away are they? Are they getting shots in a better location? The questions you ask yourself seems endless thus robbing you of your time and enjoyment while trying to get that one great shot. It's about time someone put out a video like this! Great job!!

Katie, thanks for the Canyon Wren videos. In my youth I spent a lot of time in the desert and I loved to sit in the still dawn and listen to the wren calls echo off the canyon walls. Brings back wonderful memories.

My wife is just starting to get used to me going slower and stopping frequently for photos, video and b-roll. A hike that would take most people 20-30 minutes can take us 3-4 hours easily. It is a balance as she isn't a photographer, but I think she is coming around slowly 🙂

I get it. I have been given the name of Lone Wolf by my family because I chose to drive alone and burn my own gas rather go with a family group in one vehicle to hiking areas. Maybe a 20 mile drive from the valley home to the Continental Divide trails. At the end of the hike, they load up and get back home as fast as possible. The Lone Wolf putts back down 20 miles of forest stopping at every view and to watch and shoot every critter. None of the others get that. I am on vacation at a special place I seldom see. The Lone Wolf will get back to home base much, much, later :) I hope they like what's on tv.

Josh and Katie, Leslie and I frequently say the journey is the destination. It is not about the length of the journey but the experiences along the way. If anything, we're probably even slower than you all. Every mushroom, bird, mammal, wildflower, bee, butterfly, snake, frog (Ok, you get the idea) is deserving of a closer look and appreciation. Some days we make 5 or 6 miles, some days we make 500-600 yards. Length of the journey doesn't matter.

There is nothing wrong with stopping to appreciate the sights and sounds on the trail. Even when I hike without my camera, I often stop to savor the experience. You may never see the rock at the end of the trail, but the sights along the way most likely outshine it anyway.

All my friends are trekkers. I do join them rather I have to join them. Its the bond. So when we trek , I look for birds, walk slow, and get bashed by them. But they are my biggest supporters. They even carry my camera when it gets tough for me. Last month we did a snow trek in a birding hotspot. Unfortunately we didn't encountered any bird due to snowfall. My friends carried my 3kg kit as I was affected by Altitude. They went ahead and reached destination. I arrived later. I got to see Alpine accentor bird and because my friends helped me , I was able to photograph the bird. So I say its not good for hikers to be with Bird photographer but its definitely good for us.

I loved this video, it exactly describes my feeling when I'm outdoor. I'm a hiker and mountaineer myself (and an amateur landscape photographer as well) and struggle to reach my destinations in time, stopping from time to time, listening to the nature sounds, enjoying the surroundings, and discovering all the small details around me. In the end, I'm always physically exhausted but mentally much more fit.

A number of yrs ago I belonged to an organized hiking group. We had members who prided themselves on their ability to hike a 8 mile trail in under 3 hours. I couldn't understand why they bothered to hike in the woods, they didn't have time to see anything or enjoy the outdoors. I've always believed that a hike should never interfere with walk in the woods or along a canyon rim. perfect example is my wife and I hiked 1.3 miles down on the Bright Angel trail in Grand Canyon. it took us about 2 hours going down, it took almost 4 hours coming back up to the rim. Not only from the elevation change but from stopping to admire the changes in the views. Katie, keep working on it. You'll figure out how to get that d___ camera out of your way! Excellent video as usual! Josh, be careful, you might lose your voice over job.

Those everyday things that people just walk past whilst on their way to get somewhere. I've never understood the rush to get from A to B, outside of a work perspective. Friends tell me I'm so lucky to see and photograph what I see. I tell them that all it needs is time and open eyes and they can see it too. Life is strange in how we have different perspectives. I guess being retired gives me more of that precious time but the insects I photograph are on many of the plants they pass by when walking the dog. The birds may be a little different and I'll be honest, I'm sort of selfishly glad they don't take Fido for walkies where I go to photograph certain things, birds, deer etc. Nice to see you both involved in the videos now. I am completely absorbed myself into your video. Recently, two bird photographers were robbed of their cameras at knife point, in our neighbouring state. As a serious photographer, what measures you take to protect yourself from wild animals, thieves, robbery, terrain related problems when you are taking pictures? I highly appreciate if you make video on this topic. Thank you.

It's either a photography trip or a friends trip, it can never be both. If you go out with friends, enjoy time with friends because unless they are just as crazy about photos as yourself, they will make you miserable. I have given up on camera + friends.
