Had a bimmer in today for work - I've serviced a lot of cars, never seen an oil filter coated with a solid, toffee consistency layer of hardened oil, 5mm thick, all over the filter. Took a screwdriver to dig down into it to get to even see the filter paper. Zero oil was passing through that filter. Nada. Dropped the "oil" & it was the consistency of tapioca. All 3 liters of it. Going by the drain plug, the filter housing & just general nouse, I reckon that this car had never had an oil change since new. 140k km on the clock. Service book all stamped up to date nice & purty... Brakes were in no better state. A lot of garages out there pulling peoples plums IMO, Baz - they get the bills, but not the work done. You will know this yourself.

I think the extended service intervals of 18000 miles between oil changes does not help with the wet belts. I use the Ford labelled Castrol 5w20 every 12 months and I am only doing between 4000 - 5000 miles a year but mainly short journeys. Hopefully this will delay the inevitable failure as long as possible.

I have a fiesta 1.0L ecoboost. It is about 10 years old and has done just over 73k miles. It has never had a wet belt replacement but it has also been properly looked after. All services done on time, only ever taken directly to Ford for servicing. Only ever had the officially recommended oil used on it. Even for small things such as new heat shields, the work has been done only at Ford garages. What are the chances my belt is bad? I could not afford to get a replacement but that also means I couldn't afford to repair if it is bad enough to go 'boom'...

Top job as always. I realise the camshafts are the last place to get oil hence the decision that if the cams are unmarked the engine is probably ok. Did you consider removing a big end to check bearing condition as they are the last place in the main bearing / big end line of oil flow? Clearly with the light going out so quickly all is well but interested in your perspective.

I was led to believe it had just happened with the light, so many things I could have pointed out in the video... Not true, if engine goes bang, i have seen many forum posts of people that tried to claim the extended warranty. Ford required the print out of every service including all parts used, must be a ford filter and the requirement for the ford castrol magnetech oil This must be written on the print-out. A simple stamp in the service book isn't enough. A second owner would not have this info and if it had been serviced at an independent they may not have recorded or used the correct oil brand.

Alright, it couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding but it was reliable, cheap to run and a very simple engine to work on. I changed the oil and filter every 5,000 miles and the only thing that it needed was the tappets fiddling with every now and then. At 12 years old and 70,000 miles I traded it in for a new Si (wow now that could really shift.
