I have been lucky enough to notice a reference to Lucia Popp on Spotify today. Her exceptionally beautiful voice immediately made me inquisitive. Surely she must be one of the best soprano's of all time? I think all my listening is going to revolve around Lucia Popp for the next week or so!

This is the most exquisite singing ever! Lucia’s voice has a rich yet delicate colouring which is entrancing, divine. High notes, low notes, she gives every note its fullest expression, each one in itself is sublimely beautiful, and she weaves them together in a shimmering texture of sound. Many great divas leave me cold, but Lucia is mesmerising.

Luzia Poppová was truly the soprano of my lifetime, and I feel blessed that I was around, and adult enough, to appreciate the amazing beauty of her singing and the perfect clarity of her voice during all of her professional years. Lovely beyond words to describe and, of course, it all came straight from her heart and soul. How wonderful it must have been just to sit near her at a dinner table sharing a good meal and some excellent wine, and just listening to her tell a story. I can still remember exactly where I was, and the overwhelming sadness I felt on that day in November 1993 when I heard of her passing on our local public classical music radio station. That announcement was followed by a couple hours of several of her performances, beginning with Mister Mozart's "Laudate Dominum", the very first work that I ever heard her sing, in the late '60s, and still the finest performance of this beautiful soprano solo that I have ever heard. And it is difficult to even write this, recalling that day. Hard to believe, and sad to remember, that she has been gone from us for nearly twenty five years now. But thank God we have these beautiful audio and video recordings of her during those years when she was shining so brightly, and sharing with us that incomparably beautiful voice of hers A hālāwai hou mākou, Lucia... 💔💖🌴

And fortunate to have all these wonderful little gadgets, like our little computer tablets, smartphones, and earbuds, on which to hear her in, literally, concert hall quailty surround-sound. And there is a Very worthy successor to Lucia, and one of her countrywomen (by parentage)... soprano Patricia Janečková, who lives and works in Ostrava, Czech Republic. And if her rise in the world of operatic aria and classical solo singing since about the age of 12 is Any indication (she is 22 now), then Lucia must be truly smiling down from Heaven at this young woman who sings like an angel.

Welch ein grausamer zynischer Kommentar. Ich glaube, hoffe, dass die wunderbare Lucia Popp, so eine Meinungsäußerung niemals unterschrieben hätte. Die extrem vielseitige Schauspielerin, Opern-, Operetten- und Liedsängerin, die sie war, hätte wahrscheinlich niemals derartige Einschränkungen der Vorlieben ihres Publikums diesem vorgeschrieben. Ich bin einfach dankbar für die so unsagbar vielen, vielfältigen wunderbaren Zeugnisse eines reichen und doch viel zu kurzen Lebens, das soviel Freude verursacht hat. Es wird definitiv nicht bedeutender, das hat es auch gar nicht nötig, wenn mit dem Finger auf andere Künstler, auch völlig artfremder Musikrichtungen, P.S. darüber ließe sich trefflich streiten, wenn Mozart zu seiner Zeit kein Pop-Star war, wer dann?, gezeigt wird. Just happened on this - taking a few minutes away from work.
