Thanks for the details on the successful engine build. For dollars spent the Chevrolet Big Block V8 provides the best return in terms of horsepower and torque of most engines available to a performance enthusiast. This engine has been around since the early sixties and is still very desirable. The iron block is heavy but with aluminum heads, intake, water pump the weight comes down to a manageable level for many cars.

The last 2 engines that left my shop were done more your way than mine, and it showed, the sbc 427 pump gas Hy Roller made 577 torque and the BBC 540 pump gas flat mechanical cam made 753 torque, however my HP numbers aren't up to yours. 600 and 735 respectively. In fact the BB held 735 + or - 5 from 5900 to 6900 almost flat. while the SBC was more a conventional curve. I have learned a lot in the last year watching your videos and I thank you.

Before Money..there was a reason a Big Block Chevy was designed....and there are some out here that dont build over a 3,000 dollar engine due to economy and have to live.Most i Know here in east tn. have less than 10 grand in a build....talking g.m. muscle cars late 60,s to early 70,s.......why them yankees like to come down and pluke the ol car from us.....dont take much with a big block chevy to raise Hell on the street/track without breaking the bank....small block guy spend what it takes to build a Ford.

David, I have a pair of 565cid (4.25" stroke x 4.600" bore) 9.80" deck engines that are ready for assembly, however they are for a MARINE application offshore hi-perf pleasure boat i mainly use on Lake Michigan. AFR 315cc cnc'd heads with some slight porting on the exhaust port for .700" lift. ...and I have purchased a pair of Edlebrock's dual-plane RPM Air-Gap Pt#7562 in the Rectangle Port design and that's what I am determined to use (don't want to use any single plane). I want a hydraulic roller cam to make peak power up to about 5800-6000rpm, DRY exhaust with 32" 1.7/8" primaries, 9.3:1 comp ratio, Holley 4150 950cfm Ultra XP carb (don't want a Dominator carb) I am a little concerned about reversion from too tight of a LSA on the cam profile, however I LOVE the low RPM idle characteristics of the Mike Jones Cam (450rpm at idle/neutral) ....I always thought the TIGHTER the LSA the more ROUGH and choppier the idle----no? I'm looking for TORQUE on these 565cid marine app engines....with/using the components/parts I have listed, what CAM specs/profile would you suggest and on what LSA???...and please keep in mind I want easy going smooth LOBES on the cams for long lasting durability and easy on the valve train. I am also using Crower Stainless Steel shaft mount roller rocker arms. I enjoy watching your videos and your tech info. Thank you, Sir....Mark Btw, I am NOT looking to make every drop of Horsepower at the top, rather I am looking for NECK SNAPPING TORQUE with these 565's and was planning on calling/using a Mike Jones cam as well. Any Suggestions???

I randomly found a C-454 at a swap meet a couple weeks after watching this video and snagged it. It looks like the high rise chevy intake or Performer RPM with a dominator opening. I'm building a pump gas 509 (.030 over 502) right now and planned to use a RPM Air Gap and 950. But this video got me thinking about a Dominator so maybe I'll test the C-454 vs the Air Gap with a 950 when I get it together. My late father built and raced lots of Big Blocks and was also a David Vizard fan. So I hope to do this right and make them both proud.

I have a question about the cam. I am looking for a combination that makes good power and torque on pump gas for a boat that has two 454’s. This one caught my attention. My question is regarding the cam. I have been warned that some automotive cams can cause revision of water in boats. This is where the cam sequences allow the water cooled exhaust to draw water back to the exhaust valves. How would I know if this would be a problem with this cam? I am extremely interested in the combination as the power and torque would be amazing for the current 350hp 454’s the boat has now. Awesome video!

It runs good but I’d love to build a bbc seems like you can make that kind of power and don’t have to gut it I mean they said mine had a bunch more left in it I just wanted it dependable but we all know race cars are not the only thing you can do is get a good program going with a good crew and try to keep it duck takes together. I have a single gangsta 98 turbo I’m thinking about switching too what’s your thoughts on that it has a Bryant crank mgp aluminuim rods wiseco pistons profiler heads ported and it’s about 12/1 compression Martin Smallwood speced the cam from isky and yes it’s a solid roller turbo cam the valve train is ferea valves t&d rockers pac sprigs smith brothers push rods I also would maybe like to switch from m1 to do a mix of nitromethane but I don’t wanna burn the engine down. It has a 3 speed turbo 400 that’s been build by extreme transmissions. It originally was a rossler 400 but I’ve never delt with them I have all updated electronics msd600 Holley Dominator race pac smart wire vps system I’m very curious about switching turbos and going to a different fuel.

I didn’t know you could put a 4.5” stroke in a stock block 454? Bet it takes a lot of grinding.... What kind of idle vacuum did it have with 106 LSA. I ran a Comp 280 cam custom ground on 106 in a 454 and had to tune the shit out of the carb due to extremely low idle vacuum and had no power brakes, had to add a canister and that wasn’t much better....

Hi David, I've watched this since you started because I know you from your books. I have also read all of your books and still use them for reference. I have a burning question. My BBC is on Holley EFI and I've been trying to find a good cam for it. But I don't understand where the LCA, LSA, or LCL comes into play for this type of induction. It is actually Port Fuel Injected with a Dominator 4 Bbl Throttle body topping a single plain manifold. It's running a retrofit hydraulic roller with Comps adjustable timing set and their 2-piece cover. My heads are overseas with pretty good numbers getting @335 at 700 lift. My cam doesn't reach that level (@650) and I'm using Comps Stainless 1.7 Roller Rockers. I've got a wild set of lifters also from Comp... (not saying) The cams I find for this usually have a much larger LCA at about 114 and not much lope at idle. I don't understand the difference in the LCA for this type of induction and I'm wondering if it is done incorrectly. My car is a street strip on pump gas and also has 2 stages of nitrous. I know you've played with EFI in the early stages of your past. Can you get into some BBC with this type of EFI and use good heads, but give us more cam-related information? I'd like to see this engine with electronic fuel injection and your cam recommendations. Think about working with this base and changing it over PFI and playing with the cam selection for those of us out here... Why does EFI cause them (cam people) to change from the low numbers (@106-110) you use to the high numbers (@112-114) I use? Will it be better to run yours? Thanks David, "Keep it up!"
@nerd1000ify
@nerd1000ify Жыл бұрын
High overlap has a reputation for upsetting EFI systems at low revs (due to lots of exhaust reversion spoiling the computer's airflow calculations). Perhaps this is why they recommend higher LSA for EFI engines? This is not an insurmountable problem, alpha-N tuning is largely immune to this sort of issue but much more difficult to setup compared to speed density or a MAF sensor based system.
