BB King has more emotion in his little finger than most guitarists have in their entire body. His story from very humble beginnings is a history of the blues in America. The 60s generation of rock guitar players loved him and he was finally the big success he always should have been. When I was a new guitar player my dad brought a BB King album home..."son, you need to listen to this"

@@garykloetzel9491: Um, no. He was playing in a jook joint in a rural part of Oklahoma. The joint was lit by burning kerosene in a barrel. Two guys got into a fight over a woman, one of them managed to kick over the barrel, setting the place on fire. BB ran out, then ran back in to get his guitar. He later found out that the fight was over a woman named Lucille, so he named that guitar and subsequent others (including a Fender Telecaster) Lucille to remind himself not to do something so stupid again.

I had the great privilege of seeing BB King in concert in 2008, with special guest Etta James opening. Neither one of them was around very long after that show - BB was well into his 80s by then. I will never forget BB King coming to the stage and having a seat in that chair, and absolutely killing. After the first number, he said, "Yeah, I know what y'all are thinking - here's this old man that can't even stand up to play a show, legs no good, back no good, and no good, head probably ain't no good neither... And you'd be right." Then he spent the next two hours burning the house down from that chair.

That never gets boring no matter how many times I watch it. My biggest regret is never seeing B.B. King live, especially in 2006 when he toured with Gary Moore. My two favourite guitarists together and I couldn't get a ticket. That note as he stood up, WOW! He makes it look so easy to play the blues while putting so much passion into his playing.

BB is and will forever be the man. There is nobody who gave more of themselves to music than he did. If you were a musician or a music fan of a certain age, the word of BB was essentially the word of god. He surrounded himself with so much talent, and he still stood head and shoulders above them all.

I was fortunate enough to see him perform twice during his Farewell Tour. Even when age had obviously been taking its toll and he couldn't be on stage that long, every second of it was magical. And one of the great things was: even when this was at quite a big venue (about 15.000 people), the volume wasn't that loud at all, much lower than with most concerts. Yet everyone was silent and just being enthralled by his music. Absolutely two of the greatest concert I've ever been.

Riley B. King performing on Sonny Boy Williamson’s radio program KWEM in Memphis [1948], the" blooming bluesman" soon gained a following for his unique voice and the way he played his guitar, named "Lucille". For the young Riley King, this was an auspicious place to be heard. Williamson brought many of his musician friends from his former radio show "King Biscuit Time" to perform, including Robert Nighthawk, Elmore James, and Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup. His rising star resulted in a ten-minute show on the Memphis radio station WDIA that became B.B.’s show, the 'Sepia Swing Club'. It was as a guitarist and radio DJ that King adopted the nickname “Beale Street Blues Boy,” which shortened to “Blues Boy” and finally, B.B.

B. B. King (September 16, 1925 - May 14, 2015) was an American blues musician. Often introduced at performances as "The King of the Blues", B. B. King played guitar, sang, and composed. King was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980, and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him on its list of the "100 greatest guitarists of all time" as number three. In 2006, President George W. Bush awarded King the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Among the blues pieces most strongly associated with King are "Three O'Clock Blues," "Please Love Me," "You Upset Me Baby," "Everyday I Have the Blues," "How Blue Can You Get," "Rock Me Baby," "The Thrill is Gone," and "Let the Good Times Roll." King has recorded and performed with Jimi Hendrix, Frank Sinatra, Bobby "Blue" Bland, T-Bone Walker, Bo Diddley and Eric Clapton. King names his guitars "Lucille". He usually plays a black Gibson ES-355 semi-acoustic electric guitar. Lucille is the name American blues musician B.B. King (1925-2015) gave to his guitars. They were usually black Gibson guitars similar to the ES-335-355, and Gibson introduced a B.B. King custom model in 1980. In the winter of 1949, King played at a dance hall in Twist, Arkansas. The hall was heated by a barrel half-filled with burning kerosene set in the middle of the dance floor, a fairly common practice at the time. During a performance, two men began to fight, knocking over the barrel and sending the burning fuel across the floor. The hall burst into flames and was evacuated. Once outside however, King realized that he had left his guitar inside so he went back into the burning building to retrieve his beloved $30 Gibson guitar. King learned the next day that the two men who started the fire had been fighting over a woman who worked at the hall named Lucille. King did not know Lucille but named that guitar, and every guitar he subsequently owned, Lucille, as a reminder never again to do something as stupid as run into a burning building or fight over a woman. B.B. King wrote a song called Lucille in which he talks about his guitar and how it got its name. The song was first released on the album Lucille and is included on the B. B. King Anthology 1962-1998 album. King also recorded a track called "My Lucille" (which also references his guitar). Written by Ira Newborn, it was released in 1985 and was part of the music for the film "Into the night" starring Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer. King played guitars made by different manufacturers early in his career. He played a Fender Telecaster on most of his recordings with RPM Records (USA). However, he is best known for playing variants of the Gibson ES-335. In 1980, Gibson Guitar Corporation launched the B. B. King Lucille model. The most noticeable differences between the Lucille and the Gibson ES-355TD-SV on which it is based are the "Lucille" script on the headstock, the maple neck, and the lack of F-holes on the top. King requested that, to reduce feedback, there be no F-holes. Gibson made the B.B. King Standard model from 1980 to 1985. This model had chrome hardware and dot inlays instead of block inlays. The Gibson subsidiary Epiphone markets a low-cost, foreign-made Lucille model based on the Gibson Lucille. Differences include a variation on the headstock inlays, a gloss finish and different pickups. In 1999, Gibson launched the Little Lucille, a version of their Blueshawk guitar. It differed from the Blueshawk in having a Tune-o-matic bridge and a TP-6 stop tailpiece. Gibson discontinued the Little Lucille and the Blueshawk, on which it was based. In 2005, for B.B. King's 80th birthday, Gibson made a special run of 80 Gibson Lucilles, referred to as the 80th Birthday Lucille. They presented the first prototype, which was engraved by Baron Technology, Inc, with design work by Scott Jeffrey, to King as a birthday present. King used the guitar as his main guitar until the summer of 2009, when it was stolen. On September 10, 2009, Eric Dahl unknowingly purchased the stolen instrument from a pawn shop in Las Vegas, and was contacted by a Gibson Artist Relations representative, who informed Dahl of the stolen status of the guitar. This Lucille was returned to King in late November 2009.

Heard the studio version of “Thrill Is Gone” on an AM blues station in 1969. I was 13 years old, and B.B. King singlehandedly changed my music journey in that moment 🥰

My brother Jamel, as talented as a bluesman as he was, he was even more so of a gentleman. After he performed, he would always stay after the show and sign every autograph request...RIP B.B.

got to see Mr. BB King in San Antonio at the Majestic theater shortly before his health really tanked and he passed away. It's one of the top 5 concerts in my lifetime. I am so so so glad we went.

1st saw him in 1972 at an outdoor festival, sitting on the grass, out in the open, peace and love everywhere. Followed him from then on and he helped to turn me on to the real blues. Albert King, Allman Brothers playing.

B. B King could make his guitar whisper, scream, wail, moan, groan, cry, and shout. A blues legend and icon who could project his soul through his beloved Lucille\.

I don't know what is more impressive, B.B.'s massive finger vibrato and clean tone, or his deep soulful voice. I was lucky enough to see B.B. and Buddy Guy together back in 2010.

I was fortunate enough to get to see B.B. live. One of the last great blues legends. He could say more with one note than most other guitar players can say with a hundred.

I had the honor and great pleasure to be "backstage" with BB King at an outdoor concert. He and I sat on a red tartan blanket and talked cooking, while he sipped champagne. He was open , charming and caring. It's one of my favorite memories. It wasn't an interview (I'm not a journalist, just a mom) it was two people shooting the shit about the best ways to cook chicken.

Had the honor of seeing him perform back in May 2010 at the Bell Auditorium in Augusta, GA. He was one of a kind, always knew when you were hearing Riley B. King from Mississippi. RIP Mr. B.B. King, the "King of the Blues". Thanks for Live in Cook County Jail, still my favorite of your many great albums.

I was blessed to get a chance to see this extremely talented and hard working man perform live not too long, maybe a year, before he passed away. He was an old man by that point, couldn't even stand for the show, they brought a chair onto the stage and he sat down for the whole thing. But boy, could he still play. He never lost that right up until the end. It was truly a wonderful show and I'm so thankful I got the chance before it was too late.

That's MR. B B King. We saw him at a venue called Valley Forge Music Fair @ Philly. You would have loved this place. Theater in the round, rotating platter stage and perfect acoustics. Unfortunately it gone now. I think there is a supermarket there now. As an aside, the last show we saw a VFMF was Eddie Money, Dave Mason and Foreigner before it closed. There was a food drive that cold night. It gets funnier. We had a brown bagged six pack of beer in the car and another bag of canned food goods. I gave the wrong bag to my husband. That was the night we donated 5 beers to Philabundance. My husband was so mad! He stood at the back wall and peeled of a velcroed sign that said, "PLEASE REMAIN SEATED DURING THE PERFORMANCE" and hid it in my looong leather coat. That sign hangs proudly in our powder room. We saw so many great performances....at VFMF there are tooo many to list.
