UB40 was the booklet you had to fill the back in, and take to sign on every two weeks, and it was under £30 when they met and formed the band, in the early 80s (about 24-26 quid at the time if I remember rightly) it wasn't until about 1990-ish when it went up to the £40 mark.thw UB40 booklet was still in use last time I signed on about 13 years ago. Not sure if it's still in use for social security benefits with it all changing to universal credit. It's a shame the original lineup changed. They don't sound the same now.

"Red Red Wine" is a song originally written, performed, and recorded by American singer Neil Diamond in 1967. It is included on Diamond's second studio album, Just for You. The lyrics are sung from the perspective of a person who finds that drinking red wine is the only way to forget his woes. UB40 recorded a cover version in 1983 that went to #1 in the UK and was moderately successful in the United States; it was re-released in 1988 and went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. When Diamond left the Bang Records label in 1968, the label continued to release Diamond's singles, often adding newly recorded instruments and background vocals to album tracks from Bang's two Diamond albums. For the "Red Red Wine" single, Bang added a background choir without Diamond's involvement or permission. Diamond's version reached #62 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1968. A live version was released on Diamond's The Greatest Hits (1966-92), but the 1968 single version has never been issued on a vinyl album or CD. Several artists covered the song shortly after Diamond's recording was released: In 1968, Dutch singer Peter Tetteroo (from the band Tee-Set) had a hit with a version that reached #6 on the Dutch Top 40 chart. UB40's version features a lighter, reggae-style flavor compared to that of Diamond's somber, acoustic ballad. The UB40 version adds a toasted verse by Astro, opening: "Red Red Wine, you make me feel so fine/You keep me rocking all of the time," which was edited from the single that reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart in August 1983 and #34 in the United States in March 1984. In 1988, UB40 performed the song at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Concert. Soon after in June 1988, Guy Zapoleon, program director of KZZP in the Phoenix, Arizona market, believed that the song should be given a second chance and put the full version, including Astro's "rap", on the station's playlist and it soon became the station's most popular song. With UB40 ready to release Labour of Love II, Virgin Records promotion man Charlie Minor asked UB40 to hold off on releasing the album so that the label could reissue and promote "Red Red Wine". I've been to a lot of concerts and festivals over the decades. I've never experienced anything near the collective happy groove that was the UB40 concert. The crowd was dancing, the ushers were dancing, the roadies were dancing, security gave up and danced, the food people were dancing, people had their arms around each other's shoulders, I looked behind me and the entire venue was dancing together, the squints and humheads were vibing, and I looked at the lady next to me and we realized we were doing the same moves in sync (and she looked fourteen months pregnant, so I was a bit nervous for her). I've never had an experience even close to that in my life. It was truly amazing. There's over 550 comments as I write this, so I'm sure everyone is explaining who they are, and the fusion that led to them and others. I just wanted to share that incredible, happy night.

I absolutely loved being able to live during MTV. The videos have become part of the music ever since !!! In 1981 I was 17. It was on in the rec room my entire duration of military service. Some of UB40s biggest hits were covers of other people's songs, (Red Red Wine, I Got You Babe, Kingston Town Can't Help Falling In Love) but they did their own material, too. My favourite in One In Ten which is about the plight of unemployed people in recession-hit Britain in the 1970s/80s. When the band formed they were all unemployed, hence the name UB40 - the name of the form you had to fill in to register for unemployment benefit.

Neil Diamond wrote this song in his uncle's haberdashery shop in Brooklyn whilst helping out one afternoon in the sixties . It was originally written in a country ballad style (Neil was fond of singing cowboys at the movies) although it is better known as a reggae song due to the cover by UB40 who had a No1 hit with it in the UK and USA in the Eighties. The funny thing is that they had no idea it was a Neil Diamond song as they had only heard Jamaican singer Tony Tribe's reggae version recorded in 1969. UB40 also covered another of Neil's songs, Holly Holy on their 1998 Labour of Love 111 album.

Dandy Livingstone's "Rudy" is Ska. Ska later spawned two other music genres: Reggae and Rocksteady. Most all of the early Reggae artists started with Ska (Toots and the Maytals, Bob Marley, etc.). While Ska never really had the spotlight that Reggae had, it is still going and is still on it's third "wave". Modern artists include the Melbourne Ska Orchestra (somewhere between first wave and two-tone ska) and the Interrupters (third wave style). Sorry to say this, but Bob Marley did not sign this song it was written by NEIL DIAMOND - Red Red Wine (Original 1968). I looked for the Bob Marley version, it's actually the UB40 version attributed to Bob Marley.

The video location is the Eagle and Ton a pub in inner city Birmingham UK recently demolished for a new trainset to be built (HS2). The Eagle and Ton was the nearest boozer to the bands DEP International recording studios. They were mainly a covers band in later years although started out as original material with tracks like The Earth Dies Screaming, Food for Thought although probably the best track is Tyler is Guilty a song about Gary Tyler a 16 year old who was convicted of a murder he did not commit in 1974 and remains in prison in Louisiana to this day.

UB40 in their original format, were an 8 piece group from Birminham, England. There earilier songs were originals but as time went on they went more and more into covers. They released a whole album of cover songs called "Labour Of Love". a 'UB40' was the form you took to the benefit office each week and was supposed to be filled in when you found employment. 2 of their greatest songs are "The Earth Dies Screaming" and "King" (about Martin Luther King). You should check those 2 out.
