I think it was one of your videos that made me realize that using some type of glue-ish thing on BB might solve my creaks. While I wasn't able to locate your magic sticky brake thing, I went with Park Tools AP-1 + RC-1 combo (basically Loctite 7649 + 680) and it worked great. I did the same treatment on my full suspension bike bearings and it's like new. Thanks dude!

Copper grease is great! I always use it when fitting headsets, chain ring bolts and pedals as seems more resistant to water so protects for longer.

Copper grease is anti seize too so ideal for exposed bolts etc. that’s usually used on back of car brake pads to stop squealing noises

amsp79 that’s good to know! Gives me hope 🤞 My first pair didn’t last that long (PF30) they felt very exposed without any bearing shield to speak of... will be interesting to see how these hold up.

It looks like you pushed the DI2 cables up above the BB shell, why not tuck them below where you could get at them through the access port at the bottom?
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 6 жыл бұрын
Nicoya nice catch! The reason is actually the cable to the battery was just too short in this case, was too eager to ride and decided to just go with. But you are completely correct, that would have been the best solution 👍

1:13 just noticed you used oval chainrings in this build, but you switched back to round later (in 2019). Why? Tell us about your oval experience, please.
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 4 жыл бұрын
Oval works fine, I never felt any difference apart from when I hopped on my mates bike mid climb from my oval, then is suddenly felt like pedaling squares, which was funny as my mate had round rings. But I didn’t suddenly break all my pr’s or anything like that... so when I got the new crank I went with the first-party Easton rings.

Nice build. Not sure about EVO386 standard, but all my 3 BB86 bikes are silent. Maybe the nylon BB shell from Shimano BB86 is helping here? I also tried greasing and dry press, not much difference I could find. Anyway, BSA BB still rules if not going racing aero.
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 6 жыл бұрын
Adam Queen I’ve haven’t had any problems at all with any pressfit BBs either ...yet... I wonder how big of a “problem” there really is for a correctly installed BB... or are there just persistent complaints for when they launched the pressfit standard and no one had any clue on how to install it, making homemade press tools and what not. But yeah, it’s hard to argue with BSA My Bokeh has the BSA BB and it’s definitely a smoother installation. It has longer seat-stays though so more room to play with.

I'm curious about this thing. So on pressfits, isn't the creaking usually between the bearings and the shell? then adding another piece like this conversion bb give you two possible sources of creaking? one between the shell and the bb, and inside the bb and the bearings? or is the bearing 'built in' to the bb? anyway, interested in hearing your long term review of this. is it worth the trouble or should I just continue trying to maintain my bb30?
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 5 жыл бұрын
Youthinasia Media this BB stayed super smooth all the way until I crashed my bike 😔 So while I never opened up this BB to confirm myself, from what I understand there no adapters or anything, the 24mm bearings are pressed in to the metal cups there have the outer diameter of the PF30 shell. I would guess that potential creaking would happen between the cups and the bottoms bracket shell, rather than between the bearing and cups. But I guess anything is possible. I’ve been lucky enough to avoid any creaking on my PF bb’s this far.

Why didnt they just thread the darn thing. I have pressfit on my venge and no creaks with no special intervention, so I have no hate for it. But it just seems that a threaded connection makes sense for this type of bike.
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed that threaded BB’s are a lot easier to work with. In the case of the open u.p I think they had to choose the widest possible bottom bracket shell to accommodate the relative short chain stays combined with clearance for BIG Tires. That’s why (I think) they went with bb386evo.

Thanks for your video ! I d like to know how to extract these 386 Evo pressfit cups from the frame. I have Ultra torque Campy osfit 386 evo cups where bearings are monted on the cranks.I am afraid regular "knock-out" extractors coud damage the inner part of the frame. If you know the right tool for this ....👍🏻 Thanks again.
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 5 жыл бұрын
Frédéric Jacquet yes the normal way to remove the cups is an cup removal tool like the park tool BBT-90.3. amzn.to/2TLzFXz The hammering will hurt your soul more than it hurts the frame ;) However if you’re really worried about it you could get the Enduro brt-002 for a hammer free removal, it’s pricy though. amzn.to/2Qoh30U Cheers!

OKAY I'm done with these crazy BB standards haha. I'm getting a bike with a BB386 BB, and I'll be using the new Shimano 105 groupset. What BB should I get that will fit the bike and will also fit the correct crankset?

Matthew Johnson you could get the same af in the video, or any bb386 for 24mm cranks. If you want ”the lick” take a look at this: www.hambini.com/bottom-brackets/bb386evo-bike-frames/bb386evo-to-shimano-classic-bottom-bracket.html

A bit off the topic question but I am curious how you modified Minoura RS-1600 work stand to adopt thru-axle of Open Up. I have the same stand but could not figure out how to use it with thru-axle bikes.
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 6 жыл бұрын
If was quite a while ago I did that, but you need to cut the ends of the plastic tube that goes in the dropout mount. Don't remember exactly, but I might useed a drill to make the opening bigger after I cut it... The mod obviously means that you can't use it with QR anymore.

No, BB86 is the name of the native 24mm crank Pressfit Bottom bracket (for Shimano Cranks etc.) You can not use BB86 in a BB386 frame as the outer cup diameter is much smaller... it's confusing as hell unfortunately.
